Fill A Backpack Event
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the 2016 Fill A Backpack event?
Saturday, August 20, 2016 8 AM – 2 PM Wausau National Guard Armory
Who is eligible? Marathon County students who are:
• Free or reduced lunch eligible 4K-Grade 8 for the 2016-2017 school year
• NOTE: Students who are moving from 8th to 9th grade DO NOT qualify
How are tickets distributed? Tickets are distributed by the WVC to the participating
school districts prior to the end of May. Each school district then determines when to
send out tickets to their eligible students. Tickets are usually mailed to students
between May and August.
What if I did not receive a ticket or I lost my ticket? Lost tickets are NOT reissued.
At Fill A Backpack those without a ticket must present some proof of eligibility. (See
below what constitutes proof of eligibility)
What documents will prove eligibility if I don’t have a ticket? You will be asked to
provide both of the following:
• Proper ID: (Driver’s license, utility bill, something that verifies that you are a
resident of Marathon County)
• Proof that the child is eligible for free or reduced lunch: Each year the child
is given a letter from their school verifying eligibility for free or reduced lunch. You must
have paperwork from the school showing you qualify or printed verification of family
FoodShare eligibility from the ACCESS website, access.wi.gov.
• Wisconsin Quest Cards are not accepted!
My child has a backpack. Can I receive just the supplies? Yes! We encourage you
to re-use backpacks that are in good condition. Bring your backpack to Fill A Backpack
and we will provide you with a bag of the age-appropriate supplies.
Does my child have to come for pick-up? NO, A parent can come to pick up the
backpack and supplies. The parent may come alone as long as he/she has the ticket
and knows the child’s grade.
What if a parent is unable to come for pick-up? If the parent is working or out-of-
town during distribution, another adult can pick up the backpack and supplies on your
behalf, as long as they have your ticket or valid proof that the child is eligible and know
the child’s grade.
How long does it take to get through the line to receive a backpack and supplies?
That depends on the time you arrive. Backpacks and supplies are distributed from 8 AM
– 2 PM with the longest line during the first three hours. If you are planning to come
before 10 AM, dress for the weather and be prepared to wait. Those who come after 10
AM typically find a shorter line and speedy processing. All qualifying students will be
assisted up to 2 PM.
Last year I saw people having to give back their backpack and supplies when
checking out at the Armory. Why? Every student MUST turn in a ticket to exit with a
filled backpack or supply bag. Exiting is closely monitored. No ticket, no backpack. Do
not set ticket down or lose your ticket while selecting a backpack.
Can backpacks and supplies be picked up at any other date or time? No.
We highly recommend that you make Saturday, August 20, 2016 a priority on the
calendar. We will distribute from 8 AM – 2 PM that day only.
Student eligibility for FABFAN event:
We acknowledge there are cases where a family is in need of assistance but has not
completed the necessary paperwork through their school to be eligible for the free lunch
program nor can print the FoodShare eligibility document. Therefore, they do not have
documentation to bring to FABFAN showing they qualify. It is our wish to see every child
in Marathon County is equipped for success with adequate school supplies to begin
their academic year. In such cases, we will direct families to their school’s on-site
resources for further assistance. Unfortunately, we will not be able to assist them at the
FABFAN event
ATTENTION PARENTS/GUARDIANS OF STUDENTS TAKING MEDICATION AT SCHOOL
Students with medication in the school health office, please remember to pick up this medication on or before the last day of school. Only Epipens, inhalers, or diabetic supplies may be sent home with a student. All over the counter medication, including Tylenol, Advil, Tums, etc., must be picked up by a parent or guardian unless other arrangements are made by contacting the school health office. Prescription medication must be picked up by a parent or guardian. Medication not picked up by June 8th before the end of the school day will be discarded. If your student will need the medication for summer school, please let the health office know. Thank You, Wausau School District Health Services

Parents/Guardians, please remember to check your student’s backpacks at the end of the school year for milk cards. Any milk cards with punches left on them will be sent home with students for the summer.
