FROM THE COMMODORECOM. A.J. TELMOS, MD

In celebration of Navy Week and the 100th Anniversary of Naval Aviation,Al Brata,President, Metro Detroit Council, Navy League of the United States, and his wife Toyula, hosted a luncheon for Rear Admiral John “Chris” Sadler,Commander, United States Naval Air Forces, and Deputy Commander NavalAir Forces Reserves, San Diego, California.

RADM Sadler’s remarks to the luncheon guests centered around the his-tory of naval aviation, beginning in 1911. In fascinating detail, he cited themost significant events that made navel aviation as strong and powerful asit is today. He also expressed appreciation to the Navy League membersthat support the men and women of the United States Navy. On conclusionof his remarks, we all felt proud of our Navy and all Military Services for theirhard work that goes into protecting these United States of America.

As host and MC, about 55 people were welcomed. Many were membersof the Navy League and their guests. Others were retired and active U.S. Navy personnel, members of the Commanders Club ofMichigan, and Sea Cadets. Also in attendance, Mr. Bobby Ferguson, NLUS Great Lakes Region President and his wife Charlenefrom Chicago, Illinois, Mr. Jerry Moskwa, NLUS Michigan Area President and his wife Shirley. We all welcomed the Admiral aboard.LCDR Phil Winteringham, USNCC Commander of the James M. Hannan Division and eight Sea Cadets provided the “pipingaboard ceremonies” Their performance was outstanding. The Admiral recognized their superior military training and discipline withpositive encouraging remarks.

To end the festivities, and in recognition of the Admirals’ visit to the Detroit Yacht Club, Challenge Coins were exchanged.

Fellow DYC members, thank you to all who participated in the Venetian Week to make it oneof the best ever. Kudos to the First Lady Candis and her entertainment chairs Lynda and DennisHeling who worked for weeks to make it a spectacular success.

A special thank you to Arlene Oakland and Lindsey Byers for a great story line and scavengerhunt for the youngsters. Thank you to John and Colleen Tompkins for running the raffle and silentauction which generated $6,800 dollars. Congrats to Dead End dock for best male pirate cos-tume, best lights, best over all participation and treasure chest which raised the most income.(Thank you, Judy Booth). Thank you to Dave Taylor for all the photographs of this memorableVenetian Week.

My personal thank you to the DYC staff and management who contributed every step of theway.

Congrats to the First Ladies who, through donations (thank you Daryl Dawes, John andRamona Hundt), sale of goodie bags and flags, and monies raised by Craig Lamms' antique boatrides, have raised in excess of $5,500 to replace the Ladies showers. We are awaiting a quotefrom Commodore Allen to see if the monies raised are sufficient to complete the project.

Thank you to all the members who contributed to the East End Picnic Area and to Susan Leithauser-Yee who donated all moniesfrom her Zumba class to this project. The picnic area completion was one of my three special projects I hoped to complete in myCommodore year. Donations to date are $936 which is enough to purchase the 3 in-ground steel benches for viewing the Riverfrom the East End. We have 7 picnic tables, 2 charcoal grills, 1 gas grill, a fire pit, and, soon, benches. I will order and install thismonth if possible. The picnic area is for all members and guests, so come down and enjoy it. Also it is a great place for you earlyrisers to enjoy a cup of coffee and watch the sun come up over the River.

The next major rendezvous is Sarnia Bay on September 9th. Hosts are John & Ramona Hundt and Tim & Nancy Pringle. Johnhas arranged dinner at the race track Saturday night. The DYC will sponsor the 8th race and will present a horse blanket withDetroit Yacht Club inscribed on it to the winning horse. The Pringles are planning a cocktail party at the marina followed by dinnerat Lola's Restaurant on Friday night. The maximum number that can be accommodated at Lola's is 40, so sign-up early. Saturday,Tim & Nancy are planning dinner and entertainment at the marina privation for those who do not want to attend the races.Approximate cost for dinner and entertainment will be $25.00, dependent upon participation. Sarnia Bay managers, Steve andPaul have offered to provide "baby" sitting services in the marina restaurant with a movie for the children after the dinner.

DYC members who wish to drive or prefer a hotel room to their boat can reserve a room at the hotel by calling 1-(800) 787-5010.There is a special rate if you mention you are guests of Sarnia Bay Marina.

THIS IS A GREAT RENDEZVOUS, one of the favorites of the DYC members for years. Remember "WE ARE NOT HERE FOR A LONG TIME, ONLY A GOOD TIME". See you at the Historic DYC.

FROM THE BOARDWALK TO THE BOARDROOMBY SECRETARY FRED CARR

Our facility was recently inspected by the City of Detroit and given her age did fairly well. One ortwo of the steps leading down from the second floor veranda to Main Dock were cited and have sincebeen repaired. Commodore Barlow's House Committee previously requested quotations coveringseveral repair/refurbish solutions for the entire staircase. I mentioned this issue as it typifies theBoard's desire to get ahead of the curve through planned expenditures. Unfortunately things stillcome up that require reactionary responses; take the recent storms for example while insurance cov-ered most everything there will be some unbudgeted associated costs to cover.

Speaking of the budget, the creation, analysis and review processes are underway for FY 2012.Club Management and the Finance Committee are engaged and looking at everything in an effort toprovide you the best value and the best membership experience possible.

A planned expenditure the Board approved this month was to add online sales capability to theDYC Boutique which we hope will help you with your planned expenditures for one of my favorite hol-idays of the year, Christmas. However, before then, stop in and purchase a Board approved fundrais-er Musk-E-Meet hat in support of the charity fishing derby put on last month by the Michigan OntarioMuskie Club, Kiwanis Military Family Relief Fund, Operation Injured Soldiers and the DYC.

While not requiring formal approval, the Board did give the go ahead to Detroit Over Easy as anextension of our marketing efforts. Detroit Over Easy showcases the positive aspects of Detroit as well as promotes good nutritionfeaturing our very own Chef Ken. Check it out on Facebook.

Other subjects the Board discussed included Ladies Locker Room improvements, energy efficiency, Dress Code, Language,Guest Policy and the Preservation Fund.

Official results of the 2011 Nominating Committee are scheduled to be posted September 30, 2011 on the bulletin board locat-ed across from the DYC Boutique.

Comments, questions and concerns, contact your Board of Directors via [email protected] that's the way it was from the Boardroom last month.

The Port Haven

is available for special events!

anniversary or any other special event

coming up, please

contact us for reservations now!

August was, of course, another great month of boating at theDYC. The heat finally let up making simple tasks such as unload-ing the car and getting to the boats more tolerable. We had ourannual Fleet Review which was well attended and a lot of fun. Iwould like to again thank Rich and Amy Booms for allowing theClub to use their vessel 'Booms-Away' as the Officer boat on theriver.

All through August we have again had very high attendance from reciprocal Clubs. Please remember to always let the HarborOffice know when you leave for trips as we have had 50+ boatsvisit the DYC for summer weekends. I have met many of the visi-tors which have not only praised the Club but have also given ourHarbor Staff generous compliments. We should be proud of that.Matt Newell and Lindsey Byers put together a fantastic Poker Runthis year. There was both a long and short course as well as bru-tal water fights inbetween stops. Prizes included gas gift cards, boat washing certificates from our Harbor Staff, and of coursesome choice spirits. There are many photos posted on Facebookand the website. Good times were had by all.

It is hard to believe there are only two rendezvous left: SarniaBay (September 9-11) and Frostbite (October 6-9). You can stillregister for either online or in the book at the Reception Counterbut please note that as of August 24th, we have less than 15 spotsleft for Frostbite. Check out the flyers posted in the hallway forcomplete details of both events.

Lastly, due to some of the severe storms this summer theHarbor Staff has collected a great deal of flotsam from thefleet. If you are missing coolers, fitted cushions, Isinglass orother items, please check in with the Harbor Office as theymay have it.

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGERPAUL HUGHES

It doesn't happen every day when things just click and theexperiences we had this year as the official "PresentingSponsor" of the Gold Cup Race certainly did. An amazingshowing of energy and support from within and outside of theDYC was what was needed to seed the remaining support thatsucceeded in saving the oldest, active trophy in motorsports asa part of the Detroit community. But it goes deeper than that. The day before writing this I had the opportunity to help spon-

sor the Detroit Sports Broadcasters and the Motorsports Hall ofFame of America for their pre-induction luncheon at our DYC.Racing celebrities who attended included Bobby Unser, DonnyAllison, Ed McColloch, Augie Pabst (yes, that Pabst), BrucePenhall (a motorcycle racing phenom but also co-star to EricEstrada in the TV show, CHIPS) and our own, DYC memberTom D'Eath who is a 2000 Hall of Fame inductee himself forhis accomplishments in hydroplane racing, including winningboth the APBA Gold Cup and the Prince Edward CanadianGold Cup three times each. They all loved our Club, the foodand service and I believe we can expect to see more of themin the future.

That evening I attended the unveiling of the Hall of Famesculptures at the Detroit Science Center which is where theHall of Fame is housed. A walk through the display remindedme of the larger impact that the Detroit Yacht Club and it'smembers have had on motorsports. There you will see DYCmembers Gar Wood and Tom D'Eath enshrined along with thelikes of Bill Muncey, Dean Chenowith, Bernie Little, ChipHanauer and Wild Bill Cantrel; all Gold Cup Winners. The Gold Cup, Detroit and the Historic Detroit Yacht Club are

all meant to be mentioned in the same sentence as they havebeen in the past. For that reason the Board of Directors hasapproved for the DYC to repeat as presenting sponsor for the2012 race with the intent of elevating our role in order toensure that it continues on!

I have a very important mes-sage for you regarding theupcoming months. I have puttogether an aggressive operat-ing schedule for the grill diningand grill bar to be put in placefor October 2011 throughMarch 2012. Most clubs arestill cutting back in these areasand many are simply shuttingdown for the Fall and Wintermonths. My vision is to pro-mote the DYC as a 12 monthoperation.

We have now, for the first time ever, a very clear picture of howthe grill dining and the grill bar operate financially throughout theyear as separate entities. Basically, we have been subsidizing thegrill dining area for too long. However, we know now, that it doesnot take that much action to break even in the bar.

Now, many of you have told me personally, "I would use the clubmore in the winter if it were open more consistently." I understandthe last couple of winters have been tough on us. There wasmuch uncertainty of operating hours, menu options, and cook yourown, or not.

In a couple weeks you will have the final decision on the exacthours for October through March. I can tell you now it will be openmore than you have seen in a long time. The bar will be openextensively and the grill dining will be open on a more limitedbasis, however, we will have a very nice menu available. As I stat-ed, I will get the final decision to you in a couple of weeks.

We are forming the ideas now for new activities, specialty foodevenings, and even live entertainment for these months. It will beup to you to get down to the DYC. Help me prove to ourselvesand the world that we can be a striving club 12 months per year.We are the leader.

See you at the club, all year!Paul

"SIMPLER THAN SAILINGCHEAPER THAN POWER BOATING"

“ Autumn is a second spring with every leaf a flower.”Albert Camus

For most people Septemberis the end of summer.Children go back to school, the cottage is closed, boatsare readied for storage, gar-den overgrowth is pulled and tossed away.

But not for kayakers, we can still keep paddling andenjoy some of the best kayaking of the year. Since wedo not have much of a boat, there is not much to putaway. We can leave it on the rack all year round. Anygood day in September or October, we can take it downand go out for a paddle.

And what a good experience it can be. Kayaking inSeptember when there are few people around. Goingdown the canal in October surrounded by autumnfoliage seeing the geese (or at least some of them) fly-ing south. If you are very lucky you will see a V of swanfly over.

Let’s all go out for a paddle this month and enjoyautumn.

Now a project for you, the General Membership!

A large family room with a view.

Bitter End Improvement, privately funded, has unlim-ited uses for any and all Detroit Yacht Club members. The privately funded ideas for improved Club use andincreased membership are many. The Dock Patios,Bocce Ball, Volley Ball, and Small Boat Launch are afew examples of successful private funding in these chal-lenging times.

A new design idea that will transform a good idea intoa great idea! Opening the harbor wall of the Bitter Endwill transform this existing area into a more enjoyableand more useable gathering spot.

1. The swim teams can call this home base.2. A respite for ALL the members to escape the

day's heat.3. All members' small groups or a private

place. Our target of $25,000, will provide the funding for our

air conditioned family rooms three French Doors leadingout to a small member brick patio. Our plans and budget have been approved by the Board

of Directors as a privately funded project so now weneed you.

Please chit or check directly to the DYC with the heading for "The Bitter End" fund.Contact Director Artil Leo (248) 766-4554 [email protected] or chit directly to DYC Bitter EndImprovement Fund"

Fall Series RacingSaturdays in October are our Fall Series dates. We

wind down the season with this race series that includes bothour newest and our most experienced sailors. Competitor'smeeting at 9:30 am, first race at 10 am.

Haul Out is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 5. "Golf Ball Regatta" RecapWith refinements over the event from last year, the Flying

Scots hosted our annual golf ball regatta on Thursday,August 18th. Two marks were set in the river after the rainstorm moved through the area and two buckets of plastic golfballs were taped to the marks. The objective is to sail fast tothe mark, stop the boat and pick up a golf ball, and repeat -as many times as you can. "Stopping" became a looselydefined term as the skippers and crew struggled to judgehow to approach a mark in light winds and current and tocome to a stop at the mark. It became more like "wrestle themark", "run over the mark", and "get your centerboard stuckon the anchor line of the mark". After the regatta, the classand volunteers enjoyed coney dogs and all the sides and fix-ings at the Scot shed at the east end of the island. Thanksto Keith Ridler and Greg Randall for handling the picnicpreparations and to John Gallagher for helping with the workboat and setting the marks. The Flying Scots class hosts twoevents each year during the class. The first event is a pokerrun with cards tied to the marks. Both events challenge thestudents to use all their sailing skills while having fun. This isan annual event and is open to all DYC Flying Scot sailors.Sounds easy, right? Join us next year and see how you do!
