Serving with Energy, Intelligence, Imagination, and Love

God Is Calling!

As I look back at our ten months together, I am grateful for the journey we have shared. It has been intense

and not always smooth, but it has been a reflection of God working within and through this community of

faith. We are confronting the challenges of the past in naming some of those issues that are holding us

back. We are being creative as we ponder new ways of being church in and for this community and the

world. And, we are learning to cherish the present in our times together. While the road ahead is not as

clear as we would like and there remains much to do, we have turned a corner, one that is looking with

hope to a new tomorrow.

During the coming months, you will hear a lot about the new committee structure. This new creation builds

on the strengths of what is already here, addresses some of what has been missing, and pulls all the details

together to guide congregational life so that you can become the presence of God’s love in this community

in a vital and new way. You are the key to its success and an integral part of this process as together we

learn how to be the Body of Christ in ways we never before imagined.

While it might seem there is much going on behind the scenes (and there is!), you are definitely a part of

this. In fact, you are the center of it all. Here is what you can do:

Trust God. When you embarked upon this season of transition, there was no clear road map,

only the assurance that God will guide us as we move through this time. To borrow from the

apostle Paul, the one who began a good work here is faithful to complete it.

Pray for the leadership of the congregation. This is an intense experience for them, a lot

more than what is customary for service on Session. Know that they love this congregation

and believe in what can be. Hold them in prayer, and thank them.

Trust the process. I know it is challenging, not to everyone’s liking, and often confusing -

especially in the midst of it. What has been accomplished in a short time has been tremen-

dous. We are moving forward!

God Is Calling! (continued from preceding page)

Be supportive. We all need to be active in our support of one another and the process in

which you have so courageously engaged. That is vital. This is emotionally intense and calls

us all to look inward honestly, make old relationships new, and begin to imagine a church we

never knew existed.

Be present. Come to worship, attend activities, find ways to talk with one another. Your pres-

ence means so much.

This is difficult work indeed. It takes tremendous courage and faith to do what you have done. This congre-

gation has such astounding potential. We are nowhere near closing the doors! We have a future, one that

God is working out through you right now. While it might appear that all is being dismantled, the purpose of

it all is to make way for God’s new creation.

Let’s hold on to one another, believe in the best of one another, and trust that the One who created the

universe and all that is in it is re-creating the kingdom of heaven here and now. Here’s to the future to

which God is calling!

Grace and peace, Melodie

Thriving Spirituality

Prophets of a Future Not Our Own

It helps, now and then, to step back and take a long view.

The kingdom is not only beyond our efforts, it is even beyond our vision.

We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is God's work. Nothing

we do is complete, which is a way of saying that the Kingdom always lies beyond us.

No statement says all that could be said. No prayer fully expresses our faith. No confession brings perfec-

tion.

No pastoral visit brings wholeness. No program accomplishes the Church's mission. No set of goals and ob-

jectives includes everything.

This is what we are about.

We plant the seeds that one day will grow. We water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future

promise.

We lay foundations that will need further development. We provide yeast that produces far beyond our ca-

pabilities.

We cannot do everything, and there is a sense of liberation in realizing that. This enables us to do some-

thing, and to do it very well.

It may be incomplete, but it is a beginning, a step along the way, an opportunity for the Lord's grace to en-

ter and do the rest.

We may never see the end results, but that is the difference between the master builder and the worker.

We are workers, not master builders; ministers, not messiahs.

We are prophets of a future not our own.

______________

This prayer was first presented by Cardinal Dearden in 1979 and quoted by Pope Francis in 2015.

Next Deacons’ Meeting

September 12, 2019 at 6:00

In the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the role of the deacon is one of com-

passion, witness, and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Christ for

the poor, the hungry, the sick, the lost, the friendless, or anyone in dis-

tress. Here at First Presbyterian, the deacons are particularly involved in

relationships with those who are unable to attend worship. It is an essen-

tial part of how we care for one another as the Body of Christ.

Neighborhood Church: Transforming Your Congregation into a

Powerhouse for Mission by Krin Van Tatenhove and Rob

Mueller provides insights on the Church in the midst of a

changing world. “The Christian story, from Genesis until now,

is fundamentally about people on the move—outgrowing old,

broken religious systems and embracing new, more redemp-

tive ways of life. It’s time to move again.” The book and the

participant’s guide are available through Amazon. It is not

necessary to purchase the book. At our initial gathering, we

can discuss times for future meetings.

Christian Education for children is more than teaching Bible stories. It is

nurturing a child’s relationship with God and the Church. If you are inter-

ested in teaching or assisting as part of this journey of faith, contact Pas-

tor Melodie. It will take faith, commitment, and time, but together we

can move toward God’s future for our children and congregation.

Church Anew Conference (Nov. 18-19 in Eden, MN)

This is a conference designed to develop and equip leaders for Christian

ministry today. Through nationally recognized keynote speakers, thoughtful

conversation with colleagues, and practical workshops, the conferences pre-

pare teams for the challenges of day-to-day ministry.

Are you interested in learning more about becoming the church of the fu-

ture? The Session is sponsoring a group to attend this conference to explore

being a church in a world of change. If you are interested or have questions,

please call or email Pastor Melodie by September 15.

Come to the Table

Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, invites us to the table—the table we share with

those who suffer, as he suffered, to be nourished by his compassion. Christ in-

vites; and our doors open to all those who work actively for reconciliation and

advocate for God’s justice, which makes for peace.

The Peace & Global Witness Offering draws Presbyterians together as active

peacemakers and provides education and exposure to those who show us how

to do this work well. It allows us to create resources for dealing with conflict and

nurturing reconciliation, and stand in support of our global sisters and brothers,

because the peace of Christ belongs to people everywhere.

Christ invites us to join in the ministry of reconciliation and the pursuit to end

violence through the Peace & Global Witness Offering. Through our participation in this Offering and the

ministries it supports, we offer healing, peace, and reconciliation. Visit https://specialofferings.pcusa.org/

offering/peace-global-witness/ to find more information on how our gifts promote peace in our world. As a

community of God’s people seeking to be instruments of peace bearing “peace, at all times and in all

ways,” we want to make our commitment and participation in ministries of peace visible to all. We pray

that the God of Peace might inspire us to be peacemakers in every word and deed.

Pres House is here for your students

UW - Madison

If you know any students attending UW-Madison this fall, please let them know that Pres House is here for

them.

Pres House is the PCUSA campus ministry at UW-Madison and welcomes new students to campus and pro-

vides them with a spiritual home. Their mission is to provide space, programs, and relationships for students

to experience the grace of Jesus Christ in their lives, explore God’s desire for their lives, and ultimately to be

sent out into the world by the Holy Spirit as well-grounded young adults.

You can help Pres House reach out to college students by taking a moment to let Pres House know of any col-

lege students coming to or already attending UW-Madison. You can submit student information at

preshouse.org/connect-your-students-with-pres-house/ or send an email [email protected]. They will

tactfully reach out to the students and let them know that they can find a supportive community and campus

church home at Pres House.
