From The Rabbi's DeskThe Sound of the Shofar

Can you hear the sound of the Shofar calling? Does the ring of the Tekiah Gadolah, theGreat Blast that ended Yom Kippur still ring in your ears as we enter the month of Elul? For some people the blast of the Shofar is a highlight of their High Holy Days experi-ence. For some people the blast ends as soon as the breaking of the fast ends and forsome of us we hear the call of the Shofar all year long. The same Shofar that we willagain hear sounded each morning starting the 2nd of Elul until the 28th of Elul; that theRambam explained was a wake-up call to sleepers, designed to rouse us from our com-placency. Did you know the sound from this hollowed out ram's horn could have suchpower over our lives if we just open our ears and listen. Rabbi Arye Kaplan has said onereason that we blow the Shofar is to frighten and confound the evil inclination. That thesound we so lovingly wait for each year has such power to frighten the Yetzer Harah, theevil inclination, and awaken our souls to a higher more spiritual life. We are not takingadvantage of this power and the message of the sounding of the Shofar. When we makesomething like the Tekiah of the Shofar into just a musical note we are losing an impor-tant warning alarm for our lives.

I am asking you to do something different for these High holy Days that will soon beupon us; I am asking that you begin preparing for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. Howwe prepare for these three days of the year is not by practicing our sitting for 3 or 4hours, but by learning more about these special days. We actually have a Halacha, a law,to review the Machzor, the High Holiday Prayerbook, to familiarize ourselves with thewords of the prayers. The more we are able to learn, the more prepared we are, and themore meaning we will be able to extract from these Holy days. I am offering 2 classes toaid us in our journeys through the Machzor and these Days of Repentance. The firstclass will be on Tuesday, September 8, after Minyan at 7:30 PM; and then this sameclass will be repeated during the day on Thursday, September 10, at 11:00 AM. I hopeyou will be able to join me for this Prep Work before Rosh Hashana. We will devoteanother class to prepare for Yom Kippur on Tuesday, September 22 at 11:00 AM; andthis class will be repeated on Thursday, September 24 after Minyan. (Minyan begins at7:30pm.) Both classes will be held in the library at Temple Beth Emunah. If you have afriend who is not yet a member of our community, please feel free to invite them to these2 learning opportunities. All are welcome!

As we enter this New Year of 5770, I want to bless you and your families with a year ofpeace and happiness. May we all enjoy a year of sweetness together and may we all hearthe Shofar in a new and powerful way this year.

B’Shalom,

Rabbi Arye Berk

PRESIDENT’S ARTICLE

What’s New:Our rabbi is new and he is attempting to meet as many of our members as possible. Perhaps, you met him at our Bar-B-Que and Borachu orat one of our “Meet and Greet” parlor meetings. At the Bar-B-Que about 120 people came to eat and greet and then stayed for Shabbatservices under the stars– it was a wonderful evening. Our “Meet and Greet” parlor meetings, hosted by temple members in a number of thetowns where TBE members live, have also been successful. If you have not been to a “Meet and Greet”, with a chance to chat informallywith Rabbi Berk, we are sorry you missed them. If you have not met Rabbi Berk, call him and make an appointment to introduce yourselfand perhaps sit down with him for some quick words of introduction.

Our Building:Part of our building will be getting a new roof and part of our building will get some new gutters; we have been assured that these twoactions will keep the inside of our entire building dry for the foreseeable future.

Minyan:Our services are inclusive rather than exclusive; we are a welcoming community and you are welcome to attend. There is a camaraderiewhich develops among the minyan attendees and it is a great place to find out some of what is going on within our community. Services areheld Monday though Friday at 7:30 PM, Saturday morning at 9:30 and Sunday morning at 9:00 AM. Come and join us at any of ourminyanim. Also, if you live within 10 minutes of the shul and would be willing to be “the tenth person” so that we could call you if we areone person short, please email, Aaron Riseman - [email protected] and we will add your name to the list of on-call minyan makers.

Holidays:As summer winds its way to a close, autumn with its vibrant colors and cooler temperatures will be here soon. When I feel the warmth ofsummer giving way to cooler temperatures, my thoughts will turn towards Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur and Sukkot. As the air changes, mythoughts will turn towards these holidays and my preparation for them will begin. Mental preparation, sort of like exercise, gets me ready topray. The warmth of the sun (even as it moves towards the cooler nights and days) remind me that God placed the sun and the moon and theseasons where they belong and where they return each year. Much like the seasons that return each year, so do many of us return to TBE toenjoy the warmth of the services. As sure as autumn will bring vibrant colors and the harvest the High Holidays should fill us with hope forrenewal and return. Renewal that comes both from within each of us and from the seasons as they continue to entice us to look at them asthe miracles which they are. I look forward to seeing you during our holiday season so that we can renew our friendships and perhapsrekindle our spirits.

Our Temple Families

Olivia Crowley

On Saturday, September 12th, Olivia will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah.Celebrating with her are her parents, Stephanie and John Crowley, and her sisters,Lila 11 and Alanna 7.

Olivia is in the 8th grade at South Middle School in Brockton. She is on the highhonor roll. Olivia is on her school’s soccer team. Also, she is part of her school’s student council and drama club. Olivia also plays sports, participates in competitivetwirling, travel soccer and dance.

Olivia’s mother, Stephanie, made her Bat Mitzvah at TBE and her grandparents were founders of the Temple.

Olivia’s mitzvah project was going to Height’s Crossing. She enjoyed playing games and helping them.

I can not begin to express how grateful my family and I are for all that you have done to assist us with our latesthealth crisis. The Roys have had a very challenging year. We began with deaths in the family, broken limbs, caraccidents and now gallbladder surgery gone amuck. Through it all, the temple and its members has been our rock.People did not hesitate to jump right in, offering food, transportation, child care, hospital visits, even giving dona-tions on my behalf with wishes for a speedy recovery. Our new Rabbi wasted no time in giving me emotional andspiritual support, showing that our choice for a new spiritual leader was a great one. My family and I are filledwith a true sense of community. Everyone came together, alleviating many worries, reaffirming my faith andlightening my burden, allowing me to focus on getting well. Because of everyone’s help, I am well on my way to once again becoming an active member of the wonderful community that is our temple.

As I take over the position of Brotherhood President of Temple Beth Emunah, I have toreflect on what got me here. It was an invitation that took place over 20 years ago andlike the party guest that never left, I am still hanging around. I would like to take thisopportunity to welcome back all of our returning members and to invite the rest of themen in our Temple family to join our organization.

For those not familiar with the Brotherhood of Temple Beth Emunah, we are a member ofthe Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs (FJMC) and a charitable arm of your Temple that works in the community in many areas. These include co-sponsoring with our Sisterhoodof the Bob Shrago memorial blood drive, to be held on October 22nd, 2009. We servedinner at Brockton’s Mainspring house on Christmas Day, as long as it does not conflict with Shabbat, so that the regular workers can be home with their families; we also preparethe annual Martin Luther King luncheon, this year on January 17, 2010.

Additionally, within the Temple community we sponsor such events as: Serving as HighHoliday Ushers, building the Temple Succah, sponsoring the new Chanukah dance, lead-ing the local participation in the World Wide Wrap and the Yom Hashoh Yellow Candleremembrance program. The full calendar of events, including our renowned breakfastsand suppers is enclosed for you to put into your wallet for easy reference. It is my sincerehope that in addition to your supporting our public and Temple programs, you will alsojoin us as a member of our Brotherhood and enjoy a few days a year with other Jewishmen.

Our dues structure for the coming year will remain at $40 per member. As always, newTemple members get a one year complimentary membership to our Brotherhood. Sothere is nothing to lose and everything to gain by joining. We once again will be includ-ing the cost of the paid up supper and election supper in those dues, along with the cost ofall breakfasts. For many of you, this means that there will actually be a savings, if youattend most of our events. For those of you who live outside of New England on a full-time basis, and have continued to support the Brotherhood with your dues, your dues willremain at $30. I look forward to a great year and hope to see you all soon. If you haveany questions, please feel free to email me at [email protected], or call me at508-584-9240.

Sincerely,

Nelson LibertyPresidentTemple Beth Emunah Brotherhood

BreakfastFor many years, the Brotherhoodof Temple Beth Emunah has of-fered our membership the opportu-nity to sponsor one of our break-fasts. This is an opportunity tohonor the memory of a familymember or to honor a Simcha, suchas birth, wedding or Bar/Bat Mitz-vah.

The cost to sponsor a breakfast isonly $25.00, which goes to offsetthe cost of the breakfast, as they arefree to Brotherhood members. In-formation regarding your sponsor-ship should be submitted at leastsix weeks prior to the breakfast sothat it can be included on ourbreakfast flyer that is mailed to themembership. A list of all Brother-hood events, including the break-fasts is included in this mailing.Payment is due by the day of thebreakfast. Dan Goldstein–Brotherhood 2009 Keeper of the Flame

Dan Goldstein has lived in the Brockton area for 50 years. He and his wife Ruth havebeen TBE members for 39 years. Temple life has always had a special meaning to bothof them. They have been blessed to raise their children at Temple Beth Emunah. To-day they are proud parents of Louri and her husband Brad and Todd and his wife Kim.They are proud Nana & Papa to Rachel, Sarah and Sam. As proud as they are of theirfamily, they still everyday mourn the loss of their beloved Michelle in 1987.

Dan became involved with the brotherhood right from the start. He was asked to helpout in the kitchen and has yet to leave it. It was in these early days that Dan was intro-duced to Slivovitz, a tradition that has been passed to every generation that comes toour Brotherhood. He has cooked for brotherhood breakfasts and almost all other Tem-ple functions including Brotherhood Sabbath, membership suppers, Tot Shabbat andmany of the Temple’s anniversary meals. In 1984, when Dan was named BrotherhoodMan of the Year, he even cooked that dinner unaware that he was the recipient. He hasvolunteered at the Bob Shrago Blood Drive, Flea Markets, train shows and Texas Hold-em nights. He was brotherhood president from 1987-89 and brought the Federation’s Yom Hashoah Candle program to our Temple. Dan has been involved in many Mitzvahprograms. Dan was chairing the MainSpring House project, which involved the cookingand serving of a Christmas meal to the residents allowing non Jews to be home withtheir family. This was long before the Synagogue Council started Project Ezra. Thisprogram is still going strong. While brotherhood President, the chapter received theTorch Award for fundraising for our Flea Market which will be celebrating its 36th yearthis year. Last year he even took on the enormous responsibility for cooking theKeeper of the Flame dinner with his many volunteers. Many said it was one of the bestmeals served for this function. His most famous achievement in Brotherhood has beenhis participation in Brotherhood Sabbath where he leads the Silent Amidah.

With all his brotherhood involvement he has spent many years working for the Tem-ple. He has been a Bingo volunteer for over 30 years, and house Committee Chairmana couple of times. Dan is currently overseeing the roof replacement. He has been on theBoard of Directors of the Temple for several years.

In his leisure time he enjoys spending time with his children and especially spoiling thegrandchildren, playing golf, traveling and of course cooking.

On the preceding page is an invite to join us in honoring Dan at the Keeper of theFlame dinner and to buy an ad for the tribute journal.
