‘Anchors

in the

Storm’

“For I

know the

thoughts

that I think

toward

you, says

the LORD,

thoughts of

peace and not

of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” -

Jeremiah 29:11

Pilots flying in a storm or in darkness quickly

become disoriented and deceived by their

senses. They say that when they are flying

without visibility, they can be flying in a tight

circle while their senses assure them that they

are flying straight ahead. When a pilot be-

comes disoriented in this way, his body is tell-

ing him one thing and his instruments (panels)

are telling him something completely different.

To keep flying safely, he must rely on the in-

struments in his plane.

What we know to be true (God’s Word)

when we are in trouble is “The Instru-

ment” (panel) that provides certainty regard-

less of what our physical senses (especially

emotions) tell us. Our emotions sometimes

give us false signals—deceive us. We are to

rely on our faith (spirit) and His promises.

We must persistently pursue, even though

there may be zero visibility.

The part of the process of working through

pain is learning to hang on to what we “know”

to be “true”. Let us look at the truth and pro-

cess outlined in James 1:3-4: “knowing that the

testing of your faith produces patience/endurance.

. . let patience have its perfect (complete) work,

that you may be perfect (become mature) and

complete (well developed), lacking nothing”. It

may be painful, but it is a process. Be assured

that there is nothing that happens in the lives

of a believer or an unbeliever that God does

not know about because the process is divine-

ly supervised. Since God works in “all things”

we are guaranteed that whatever He permits –

whether pain or pleasure, misery or blessing,

He is able to use it all to transform us.

God will allow us to go through a series of

actions (a process) to fulfill the perfect plan

that will give us a future and a hope. God has

no process without purpose. The guarantee

of Romans 8:28 states that we know that God

processes in all of us all things toward good.

“God works” indicates a present, continuous

process; meaning God will never abandon His

purpose for us, nor the process to accomplish

it. For the believer, there is no pain without

the purpose of good results.

Proverb 23:7, says, “as a man thinketh in his

heart, so is he.” In other words, his percep-

tion is his reality. For instance, if his glass of

water is filled half way, he can choose to see

it, either half empty or half full. The same

holds true for his gas tank gauge or his wallet.

There are many false perceptions created

everyday all over the world, by people who

try and take a short cut in life. Some are

entertainers, models, athletes, advertisers,

telemarketers, and online computer scam-

mers, just to name a few. But, here at Fairfield

Baptist Church, it is our objective to serve

God in spirit and in truth, to discipline the

unruly, to evangelize the unsaved, and to edify

the saints of God.

The Greek word for fellowship is “koinonia.”

Koinonia is mentioned approximately twenty

times in the Bible, and it means, communion,

joint participation, and teamwork with one

another. Koinonia identifies the ideal state of

fellowship and unity that should exist in the

Christian church.

Before Jesus fed the five thousand, Matthew

14 says He had compassion on them and

healed their sick. Jesus prayed over the five

loaves and two fish and told His disciples to

distribute them among the multitude. Jesus

was demonstrating to His disciples, that fel-

lowship requires teamwork and joint participa-

tion. In other words, Jesus led by example,

which caused their fellowship to grow even

more.

2 Kings 2:11, says that two men were walking

along a path together conversing, one named

Elijah and the other named Elisha when sud-

denly a chariot of fire and horses of fire ap-

peared and separated the two of them, and

Elijah was taken up to heaven by a whirlwind.

Verse 12, Elisha saw this and cried out, “my

father! My father! The chariots and horse-

men of Israel!” And Elisha saw him no more.

He, then took his garment and tore it in half.

History has it that lyricists and song writers,

tried to capture that moment in time, by re-

cording the song, “Lo Down the Chariot.”

When our twelve tribes come together for

breakfast or meetings, our experience is more

than just the food or our agendas. There are

times when the Holy Spirit leads, guides, and

directs our fellowship, maybe with a word of

knowledge, a song or a testimony, and we

turn out as one man, on one accord, in true

koinonia.

Are You An Encourager? By Joann Williams-West

The Bible instructs us to encourage one another, and at times we all need

to be encouraged by others (Romans 1:11-12; 1 Thessalonians. 4:18; 5:11;

Hebrews 3:13; 10:24-25). One of the most admired individuals in the New

Testament was a man from Cyprus named Joseph. He was such an encour-

ager that the early church members changed his name and called him Barna-

bas, which means “son of encouragement”. Recall that it was Barnabas who

encouraged Paul when the believers were suspicious of him. Barnabas took

Paul to the apostles, and stood by him when the others were still cautious.

Paul paid it forward when years later he was an encourager. Remember

the occurrence in the prison when Paul put his words on the parchment?

There was no complaining. Instead, Paul wrote a positive letter of encour-

agement to Timothy, the young man who would take over after his mentor

was gone. The letter begins with thanks to God, even in the midst of diffi-

cult circumstances (2 Timothy 1:3) Then Paul wrote about prayer. We must

realize as encouragers that sometimes all we can give is prayer. In reality,

it is the best we can give. Imagine how Timothy must have felt to read that

he was constantly being remembered in prayer by the saintly Apostle Paul

(v.3)? If you want to be a people helper and you do not know where to

start, you can become an encourager - starting with right now! Pray for

those who need encouragement. Send a card or a note to someone who

might not expect it - a relative, a secretary, the pastor or other Christian

leader, a former teacher. Look for an opportunity to encourage some-

body every day by giving a compliment, saying thanks, expressing your

appreciation for what someone has done or is doing. Like Paul in prison,

you might find that encouraging others helps dull some of the pain and

struggles that might be in your own life. Kind words of encouragement can

cheer up another person and you- the encourager! (Proverbs 12:25:

25:11)

An old quote; “If you pray, don’t worry and if

you worry, then why pray?” Well here we

are. Imagine, your bills are due and you were

laid off last week. Your significant other

thought this would be the perfect time to

leave. The home that you are living in is

rented and the new landlord wants to in-

crease the rent. A tree fell across the yard,

after a fire and the homeowner’s association

are requesting the tree’s removal. You are a

transplant from Idaho, with no siblings. Your

car is broken and the bus stop is a half mile

away.

This is not enough for those of us with such a

solid foundation in Jesus to start worrying.

But, take a minute and be honest with your-

self. Many of us at some point have forgotten

about the first thing that we should be doing

in times like these, PRAYING. Isaiah 55:6

says, “Seek the Lord while He may be found.”

Salvation, grace and mercy is there to be

found if you seek Him first. He is always

there, willing and able. We just have to trust

Him. Many have called on Him and He has

and will answer.

Do not think that just because you have wor-

ried that you fall short of the Glory of God.

Just the opposite. All have fallen short of it.

Constantly, talk to God through Jesus in all

things. And remember Isaiah 65:24, “It shall

come to pass that before they call, I will an-

swer. And while they are speaking, I will

hear.”

Your being laid off is an opportunity to

stretch you to your full potential and move

you from that comfortable position that does

not utilize the gifts that God has given you.

That significant other was not so significant

after all. You have a leasing agreement that

has not been fulfilled and the tree belongs to

them. Your family is with the people of God

and that half mile walk is another opportunity

to stretch and get back in shape. He has a

way of putting us exactly where we need to

be. So, do not worry, just pray and be

happy.

What to do when a power line hits your car…. You are minding your own business, when suddenly a power line comes

crashing down on your vehicle. Here is what you should do to stay safe:

1. If your vehicle still runs, drive away. Simply drive from under the

wire and move to a safe distance. 2. If your vehicle is stalled, stay inside. You will be fine if you stay put.

The car’s body directs the electric current around you. It is okay to

touch things inside the car and use your cell phone.

3. Call 91. Next, Call the electric company. 4. Keep bystanders and others away. Shout to bystanders not to come

near or touch the vehicle. Touching the vehicle and ground at the

same time will complete the electoral path to ground, resulting in

electrocution. 5. Sit tight until help arrives. Do not get out of your car until the elec-

tric company’s technician gives you the all clear.

EXIT YOUR VEHICLE ONLY BECAUSE OF FIRE OR OTHER IMMI-

NENT DANGER:

1. Open the door. 2. Stand on the rocker panel (the steel just below the door) with both

feet together. Make sure to control your arm movements. Jump

from the car with both feet together. Never allow any part of your

body to be in contact with the car and ground at the same time! 3. While keeping both feet together, gently hop away from the car. Do

not try big hops that could cause you to lose your balance and fall. 4. At a safe distance, slowly spread your feet apart. If you feel a tingle,

put your feet back together and hop further away.
