Sustainability: Fad, Farce or the Future?
wThe concept has never been easy to define or understand. It gained prominence with the release of the Bruntland report in 1987 that generally defined sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. But since that time dozens of definitions have evolved adding to its complexity and fuelling challenges to its legitimacy.
Adding to the challenge is the abuse of the “green” aspect of sustainability. Recognizing a growing public appetite for more environmentally friendly products, companies flooded the market with claims of greenness of their products or services, most of which were questionable at best. The result was “green-washing”, which turned consumers into doubters, and became a potential business risk for those that couldn’t back up their claims.
But perhaps the largest hurdle for business sustainability has been the inability to measure its impact on the financial bottom line. Viable metrics have been hard to come by and the business community struggles to manage things it can’t measure. Even the “triple bottom line” (people, planet, profit), our current standard business definition of sustainability, struggles with ease of measurement.

Despite these issues, businesses are implementing sustainable practices, and a growing number of enterprises around the globe and in our own community are concurrently pursuing economic viability, environmental protection and social well-being.
The reality is that no matter whether you believe sustainability is a fad, a farce or the future, it is simply smart business. More than that, sustainability is an opportunity to ensure even greater success for your business in the future. It’s not a tradeoff against the financial bottom line – a choice between profit and social responsibility - sustainability is a business strategy to achieve an even stronger financial bottom line.
Cost savings….Brand enhancement….Risk management….Access to new markets…Competitive advantage…..Employee productivity. This sounds like a list of typical business objectives. As a matter of fact, it’s also a list of the top reasons why businesses are pursuing sustainability.
Are you a business that seeks to improve efficiency and reduce waste? Then you are a business that is also pursuing sustainability. Using less inputs (resources) to produce the same amount of outputs not only benefits the financial bottom line, but also has positive impacts on the environment. This is one of the key reasons for implementing sustainable business practices – reducing expenses. It’s about looking at initiatives that make sense economically, but also make sense environmentally and/or socially.
Driving down your electricity or natural gas consumption through equipment upgrades (i.e. more efficient lighting) is smart business if the payback period is acceptable. It also has the added benefit
of being a sustainability initiative by lowering greenhouse gas emissions created in generating the energy used.
Pursuing sustainable business practices creates the biggest possible return on investment because there is the short-term financial benefit of the practice, and the longer term benefit of enhancing your brand and building loyalty from your customers, your employees, and your community.
Sustainability is just a word – a word with challenges. First of all, it’s six syllables long (how many six syllable words do we use on a daily basis?).
Secondly, most businesses likely want to grow in the future, not simply “sustain” themselves. But the concept of what sustainability represents is brilliant. Smart business is never a fad or a farce, but it is always a path to a successful future.

ENVIRONMENTmatters2010 Finalists from the Environmental Practices Category
aM&M Recycling and Disposal
M&M Recycling & Disposal employs over 25 people, has been operating for more than 30 years, and services hundreds of Peterborough Area businesses and residents. M&M has invested in a multi-material recycling facility that has diverted thousands of tonnes of construction and demolition waste from our landfills (recyclable materials like wood, metal, cardboard and paper products; when separated these materials are all recyclable, but together they are considered garbage). M&M has also invested in recycling equipment and staff to separate these materials into recycling streams. This facility and recycling service was developed to provide a cleaner and more environmental solution, as these materials had always been taken to local landfills for final disposal.

Dawn Tack, of Gardens Plus, spoke about easy care perennials being the way to better gardens. Dawn went on to say that it’s important not be a slave to your garden, but that it is all about plant choices. She then shared some gardening tips: Water lots but less often; get the weeds before they go to seed; garden/plant when cooler; spread the roots and mix the dirt from the pots with yours when planting. The fall is the second best time of year to plant perennials– they are usually on special and they will be twice the size in the spring.

With an aging population and a low birth rate this demographic shift will affect Peterborough in the near future.
The Peterborough Partnership Council on Immigrant Integration (PPCII) exists for promoting, advancing and supporting coordinated immigrant integration in the Peterborough community. They are seeking to help employers to attract a more diverse workforce and provide products/services to a more diverse clientele. To this end, they also need your ideas on how Peterborough can become a more welcoming place for newcomers to study, work and live.

Each year the Peterborough Chamber is actively involved in lobbying all levels of Government on behalf of its members. Whether it’s municipal taxation, the City or County transportation plans, improving access to health care in the province, a national nuclear energy strategy, or removing inter-provincial trade barriers, the Peterborough Chamber of Commerce is a key player in the process.
Chamber General Manager Stuart Harrison is Chair of the Ontario Caucus for the Canadian Chamber AGM in September in St John’s Newfoundland. In keeping with this month’s Sustainability editorial theme, an example of one of the Policy Resolutions to be debated at this year’s AGM is “Green Economies Generate Employment and Increase Prosperity” and comes from the Sherwood Park & District Chamber of Commerce, co-sponsored by the Red Deer Chamber of Commerce. The following excerpts are included in their submission:
“As [economic] recovery begins to take hold, the words ‘innovation’ and ‘sustainability’ have become focal points for enterprises seeking to ensure business success and longevity. Smart businesses realize that engaging in eco-friendly practices can save money and improve efficiencies…”
“With a supportive pro-business focus, the federal government can lay the foundation for a prosperous, diverse and resilient green economy.”
“Investing in the development of a green economy accomplishes several things:
1. Establishes Canada as an environmental leader: Using incentives, low-interest rate loans, and enhanced education and training programs, the government can lay the foundation of a diverse and resilient Canadian economy.
2. Diversifies the economy: Muscular investment in new markets with a proven global foothold such as green technology and eco-commerce can support a resilient, stable, strong economy in Canada.
3. Creates skilled jobs: A green economy can generate as much growth and employment as a brown economy, and outperforms the latter in the medium and long run, while yielding significantly more environmental and social benefits.
4. Attracts foreign investment: And while the scale of financing required for a green economy transition is large, it can be mobilized by smart public policy and innovative financing mechanisms.

3. Prioritize government investment and spending in areas that stimulate the greening of technologies and systems in all sectors and industries.
4. Educate producers and consumers to incent a shift in preference toward green investment and innovations that promote environmental sustainability.”

This policy resolution will be debated by the delegates at the AGM, and either approved, or not approved. It is supported by the Canadian Chamber’s Energy and Environment Committee and by the Ontario Caucus, so the chances of it becoming official Canadian Chamber Policy are high. If approved it is considered a clear and decisive national policy mandate that the Canadian Chamber of Commerce will then pursue vigorously with the federal government. Those resolutions that are approved become policy of the Canadian Chamber for the following three years.

Dr. Rita Kilislian is an Endodontic Specialist serving the communities of the Kawarthas’, Peterborough and surrounding areas. She is an advocate of green dentistry and owns her own eco-friendly practice here in downtown Peterborough. As the first Endodontic Specialist to open a practice in the city, Dr. Kilislian began her eco-friendly practice in 2010 and has been saving thousands of natural teeth ever since.
For several years now, the health of the environment has been a topic of much concern. Various institutions, organizations, and dedicated individuals across the globe are doing their part to take care of our planet. For the medical field, the transition for environment-friendly care hasn’t been seamless.
Nevertheless, “Kawartha Endodontics is home to white teeth and a green office philosophy” explains Dr. Rita Kilislian. Dental practices that have gone green incorporate technologies that improve their practices and procedures, while making their offices more eco-friendly.
For example, one of the most significant innovations for “green” dental practices is digital radiography, which eliminates the need for traditional film X-rays. This change allows dental practices to dramatically reduce the harmful chemicals, like lead and silver, that are released into the environment during film
development. Digital X-rays are also safer for patients. They reduce exposure to radiation by approximately 90 percent. Overall, these images are more convenient because they are immediately available to the dentist and of better quality than traditional X-rays, which leads to greater diagnostic detail and accuracy.
“Green” dental practices also use high-quality, bio-degradable disinfectants and steam sterilization methods, which don’t require ventilation for chemical vapors or a hazardous waste permit for the disposal of toxic chemicals, which can end up in the public water supply. Special, environmentally friendly washers and dryers exist, often on-site at the dental office, to facilitate the use of cloth bibs, gowns, headrest covers, and other supplies that can be sterilized and reused. It is estimated that dental offices in North America dispose 1.7 billion paper products into landfills every year. By using washable, reusable products, this number will be greatly reduced.
We hope “Green dentistry” is becoming more and more popular. In a time when the well being of the planet is at risk, “green” dentists do their part by rethinking decisions about their office products, supplies, and equipment, striving to decrease the impact of their practice on the environment in terms of energy, and, overall, choosing environmentally sound options.

In their goal to improve customer service, group benefit insurance providers are becoming Eco Friendly. On-line services have been created to allow firms access to information about their Employee Benefits, Premium Summary, Billing Statements, Employee Data, Forms and Optional eBilling. For employees it can provide a list and description of their benefits, claims history and usage, forms, facts and personal profiles.
I sometimes wonder if postal strikes have helped in some small way to move insurance companies in this direction. I also can’t help thinking that there must be a lot of back slapping around corporate boardrooms because of the millions of dollars that are being saved on paper costs, or rather the transfer of paper costs from companies to their Sales Force and customers.
