1-3 January - The "World Famou. Golden Dragons" began 1969 based ashore at NAS Lemoore, California. CDR J. K. STANLEY was Grand Dragon.

k21 JanuarY - Weapons Deployment to NAAS Fallon, .evada, where the WFGD'. won the OAO Top-Gun Award.

22 Januarr - 14 FebDI8ry - Practi~e at NAS Lemoore for carrier quali­fications.

15-19 February ~ Carrier work aboard USS ORISKANY (CVA-34).

19 FebruarY - 12 March - More FMLP at Lemoore.

12-20 March - More carrier work on board the ORISKANY.

21 March - 14 AwJ1: - Final preparation at NAS Lemoore for combat cruise.

15 April - 16 May - The Dragons transferred to the USS ORISKANY which .teamed for the combat area, the Gulf of Tonkin, via NAS Cubi Point, Republic of the Philippinee.

5-14 June - U.er three waeks of combat, the Dragons rested and re­pleniehed at NAS Cubi Point and departed again for Yankee Station.

15 June - 2 July - More combat action.

3-11 July - The USS ORISKANY moored at NAS Cubi Pt. once more I.or a ehott rest before retllri1nc to action.

12-31 July - Back at Yankee Station, the Dragons suffered their first aircraft lossee in a midair collision of two Dragon Slt;yhawks during an air strike. Both pilots were recovered safely after ejecting and spending tiae night on the ground in ene~ occupied territory.

1-14 Augu.t - Another reet for the Dragons at NAS Cubi Pt., end then Hong Kong.

1~ August - 14 september - Back in action at Yenkee Station, the Dragons suffered another aircraft loe. when en A4F pilot was forced to eject after launch from the Ihip. Again the pilot was safely recovered.

15-28 September - The Dragons visited Buckner Bay, Okinawa, and Saseb6, Japan.

28 September - 3 November - The last combat operations for the Dragons on thh cruiee. !CDR R. E. WOODBURY, assumed command as Grand Dragon on October 19.

There were also flame missions in direct SBPport of Allied ground forces in the Republic of South Vietnaa. The Golden Dragons worked long, hard hours car,rying out their ~.aa~ missions, often at night and in unde.irable weather conditions.

B. Casualties.

1. On the night of 21 July, 1969, tW9 Skyhawks collided while attempting to locate a target being described by a nSAF Forward Air Con­trol in a (~130 Hercules. Both sircraft burst into flames immediately and spun out of control, forcing the pilots to eject in enemy territol\Y. Both ejectIons were successful, tnd the pilots, LT K. T. SANGER ana LTJG W. E. FRANSON spent the rest of the night awaiting rescue. They were located the following morning at daybreak and returned safely aboard the USS ORISKANY.

2. On August 15th an A4F piloted by LT W. B. LAWRENCE, experienced control failure immediately after launch from the .carrier. The pilo1l1 was unable ~o regain control and wasfllrced to eject from the aircraft. He, too was successfully recovered almost immediately.

D. Awards and Commendations.

1. The Colden Dragons received notification in February 1970 that they had won the coveted CONNAVAIRPAC Battle Pennant "E" for Battle Efficiency for the 18-month period ending December 31, 1969. This was the second timet the Dragons have won the "E", the previous one being for the period of 1965-66. The message from CDMFAIRlliMOORE, Message Number 13232DZ FEB 1970, read:

"It is not.ed with pleasure that once again the "World Famous Golden Dragons" are in the winners I circle. It takes real Tigers to stand Number One continuously among the real professionals of the light attack community. Your squadron has compiled an enviable record over the past five years and the challenge is to remain unbeaten as you commence competition in yoUl' nflW aIrcraft.

2. For the fourth consecutive year the Dragons won the eND Safety Award.) VADM SHINN, COMNAVAIRPAC, presented the plaque to CDR J. K. STANLE~ on board the USS ORISKANY in the Gulf of Tonkin on October 13th. The four years included four combat tours in Vietnamese waters,. a~d it represented

3. In Maroh, 1969, the Golden Dragona were awarded the CVW-19 Top Gun Award for tbeir expertise in bombing and air-to-ground rocketry and strafing. CDR GURF .. C1e, CAG-19, presented tbe award to CDR J. K. STANLEY at a ceremony in the NAB Lemoore Officers Club.

BIOGRAPHY_OF COMMANDER J. K. STANW

Commander Joseph K. STANLEY entered the U. S. Naval Acad~ in 1948 artd was commissioned an Ensign, USN,upon graduation in' June 1952.

After graduating from the Naval Academy, Commander sr~"Y served aboard the USS HAMNER (DD-788) home ported-in San Diego, California as First Lieutenant and Assistant Gunnery Officer.

In April 1953, Commander STANLEY reported to NAB Pensacola as a Flight student and receivad his wings in July 1954.

In July 1954, Commander STANLEY wae ordered to Antisubmarine Squadron 24 at NAS Quonset P01nt, Rhode Island where he serred aa Line Officer and Ordnance Officer.

Commander STANLEY has served with VS-31, VS-B81 (Royal Canadian Navy), VA-46 and VA-42. Commander STANLEY has been to the Naval War College and was RCVW-4_ Staff Attack Training Officer. Before joining the West Coast A-4 cummuni ty he was Commanding Officer of NAF Cam Ranh Bay.

On 13 December 1968, Commander STANLEY relieved Commander L. F. EGGERT as Commanding Officer of the ~Qolden DragonaR •

Commander STANLEY'. awards inolud numerous Air Medals, the Navy Commendation Medal, Korean and Vietnamese Campaign Ribbons.

Commander STANLEY was ordered to COMNAVAIRPAC Steff in Xovember 1969.

BIOGRAPHY OF COMMANDER R. E. WOODBURY

Commander Robert E. WOODBURY was commissioned an Ensign, USN, upon graduation from OCS Newport, Rhode Island in May 1952.

Commander WOODBURY reported to the USS L. F. MASON (DD-852) as Assistant Navigator where he served until April 1953 wben he reported to NAS Pensacola for flight Training. Upon receIving his wings in September 1954 he was ordered to Attack Squadron 172 fly F2H Banshee. This tour included cruises to the Mediterranean and North Atlantic.

In January 1958, Commander WUODBURY reported for instructor duty at Jet Transition Training Unit (JTTU), NAS Olathe, Kansas, flying the F9F and the F11F.

Commander WOODBURY reported to Attack Squadron 44 as an instructor in October 19'9 where he transitioned to the 14 skyhawk. Upon completion of his shore duty he was ordered to Attack Squadron 12 in March 1961 as Maintenance Officer.

In May 1963, Commander WOODBURY reported to the USS SARATOGA as V-6 Division Officer.

Reporting to Attack Squadron 44 for instructor duty in April 1965 he served as Maintenance Officer until May 1967.

Commander WOODBURY reported to Naval Flant Representative Office, MCDonnell-Douglas Corporation, St. Louis, Mo. where he served as Flight Test Director and Production Test Pilot forF-4J,F-4D/E, RF-4C and the United Kingdom F-4K and M aircraft until July 1968.

In July 1968, Commander WOODBURY was ordered to Attack Squadron 192, the "World Famous Golden Dragons" as Executive Officer, via Attack Squadron 125. He reported to Attack Squadron 192 1n January 1969 and served as Executive Officer.

On October 19, 1969, Commander WOODBUR! took over as Commanding Officer, or "Grand Dragon", for VA-192, the position which he presently holds.

Commander WOODBURY 1s ent1tledto wear the Korean Campaign Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Vietnaa Service Medal, and the Air Medal with the· numeral 10 for over 100 oombat missions.
