PULUBI

• Beggars who wanted to witness the trial of Mang Serapio.

PULUBIS ARE…

• Generally (yes, Filipinos, but also meant as) the “masa” (mass), or part of the “masa” who get to observe the trial.

• In the book, the pulubis have very small roles to play, here, their roles are highlighted to reflect what society is negatively capable of.

• Notions or social practices or the negative aspects of Pinoys which are focused here are: shame-oriented (major concern of social-approval, acceptance), gaya-gaya (emphasis on façade, palabas, pakitang tao, pagyayabang), particularism (prefers to be loyal to a certain group), colonial mentality, crab mentality, usapang kartero (gossips, which some information is added or subtracted); and status consciousness (status more than anything else).

IF YOU DISAGREE TO THIS…

• Then it’s UP TO YOU to prove if you belong with these kind of (negative) pulubis,

• OR NOT—that you are a TRUE PILIPINO—the kind of Filipinos worth dying for.

UNANG (1ST) PULUBI

• Unang Pulubi is seen to be a personal friend of pulubi 2. She, more or less, share the same traits as pulubi 2.

• Pulubi 1 is shame-oriented, and she has lines which are more deliberate or cautious than the other two—like she’s thinking twice of what to say before saying.

IKALAWANG (2ND) PULUBI

• This pulubi shows more concern of “status consciousness”, and shows the fact that Filipinos or this society is attached to the internet especially twitter and facebook.

IKATLONG (3RD) PULUBI

• Shows particularism, and hint of sarcasm or the “kaloko” towards her fellowmen kind of aspect—the shallow jokes which work so well in the masses.

• Also, Pulubi 3 will be shown to be an avid supporter of her “idols” (mga tagapagtanggol and mga saksi), and is hinted to look down on her fellowmen.

UNANG (1ST) BANTAY/PILAY

• As Unang Bantay, he guards and occasionally restrains Serapio, together with Ikalawang Bantay.

• As Unang Pilay, he will be a foil character of a fool known as “that certain Phil. senator”, with Iskul Bukol corniness by the three stooges: Tito, Vic, and Joey—from the “ngee!” with matching corny actions, to basically showing how one of these three stooges managed to get a seat in the senate—and tried to ruin our ONLY REAL FREEDOM: the internet. This pilay reflects him.

IKALAWANG (2ND) BANTAY / PILAY

• Together with the Unang Bantay, Ikalawang Bantay guards and occasionally restrains Serapio, together with Ikalawang Bantay.

• As Ikalawang Pilay, this character depicts a relatively normal person, rational, and just follows whatever is ordered/tasked upon.
