Series SDF-AFAxial Flow Forced Air Turnover System

Low-Cost Heating/Cooling Solutions for Commercial and Industrial ApplicationsThe Series SDF-AF is a packaged axial flow forced air turnover system for heating, cooling or ventilation, delivering high volume, low velocity air for quiet operation in large volume commercial / industrial warehousing and production facilities. It can reduce heating and cooling costs by up to 40% over traditional conditioning systems and its packaged design installs quickly, requires no ductwork and is easy to maintain. The SDF-AF energy-efficient axial fans provide air turnover rates of 1 to 4 times each hour mixing the air thoroughly for uniform temperature and humidity from floor to ceiling.

Flexible Fuel Burning Options

The SDF-AF incorporates standard fuel burning equipment that utilizes a forced draft combustion system. Fuel options include natural gas, LPG and CS #2 fuel oil as well as combination fuel input arrangements. The SDF-AF can also be configured for high elevation operation and low emission performance applications.

The Most Trusted Name in the Industry

Jackson & Church HVAC Global provides a diverse offering of packaged indirect-fired duct heating and cooling systems for use in industrial and commercial comfort applications. Throughout the world, Jackson & Church HVAC Global products provide reliable service at sustained operating efficiencies meeting or exceeding established industry codes and standards.

Traditional Heating Systems

Air stratification is a condition where air, at different temperatures, form layers within the building space trapping warm air at higher elevations. The warmer air, therefore, cannot re-circulate throughout the remainder of the building, creating a greater demand on the system to maintain space comfort.

Series SDF-AF

The Series SDF-AF draws in the colder air at the ground level, heating or cooling the air and returning it to the space through a large supply air discharge plenum to create a highly efficient air flow pattern. The result is temperature uniformity for greater space comfort that is both quiet and cost efficient.

Nomenclature

Series SDF-AF Design Features

Self-Contained For Easy InstallationJackson & Church HVAC Global Series SDF-AF packaged axial flow forced air turnover systems are specifically suited for continuous air recirculation operation in industrial and commercial space comfort heating and cooling applications. The SDF-AF conditions both outside and return air, and can be configured as a completely self-contained system eliminating the need for ductwork to deliver tempered air.

Engineered for Today’s Demanding ApplicationsThe SDF-AF includes a high-efficiency stainless steel air heat exchanger furnace that provides even heat release rates to assure reduced material stress. Oversized outside/return air inlet and supply air discharge plenums deliver large volume CFM (m³/min) under low velocity for reduced noise operation. Continuous-operation design eliminates air stratification in large volume industrial and commercial spaces preventing thermal barriers of layered stratified air resulting in uniform temperature and humidity levels.

Available Options Enhance PerformanceThe SDF-AF packaged axial flow forced air turnover systems arrive complete with many standard performance and safety features. An optional induced draft fan facilitates a negative pressure condition within the combustion chamber. This assures combustion stability and aids in preventing escape of flue gases to tempered space in the event of heat exchanger integrity failure. The flexible design permits optional steam, hot water and electric coil heating as well as chilled water and direct expansion coil cooling mediums.

Meets or Exceeds Stringent Industry StandardsJackson & Church HVAC Global Series SDF-AF packaged axial flow forced air turnover systems are designed, constructed and evaluated to meet or exceed industry standards. The product is an NFPA classified Category IV appliance and is available as a cETLus Listed package. Other available compliance standards include UL, FM Global, GAP and construction suitable for use in NEMA classified indoor or outdoor non-hazardous locations.

Series SDF-AF GuidelinesWhen considering Jackson & Church HVAC Global Series SDF-AF packaged indirect fired axial flow forced air turnover systems, the following guidelines should be employed.

First, determine the industrial or commercial space CF (m³) volume, which shall be tempered and must be ascertained. This volume should be NET of stored inventory, machinery and confined or segregated space. Secondly, a design professional must determine the heat loss of the building structure to ascertain MBH (Mcal/hr) requirement.

As a general rule, typical industrial or commercial spaces shall require between 1 to 3 BTU/CF (9 to 27 Kcal/m³). For heating only applications, typically 2 to 3 air changes per hour is utilized. For cooling applications, typically 3 to 4 air changes per hour is utilized.

US-IP SI

SCFM =Net CF Volume x Air Change / Hr

60 Minutes / Hr Sm3/min =Net m3 Volume x Air Change / Hr

60 Minutes / Hr

I. When determining required standard air delivery rate at 70°F (21°C) CFM (m³/min), based on NET building volume and desired air changes per hour, the following formula is utilized:

US-IP SI

SCFM =BTUH OutputTR ˚F x 1.08 Sm3/min =

Kcal / Hr. OutputTR ˚C x 18

II. When determining standard air delivery rate at 70°F (21°C) CFM (m³/min), based on BTUH (Kcal/hr) output requirement and desired temperature rise, the following formula is utilized:

US-IP SI

Temperature Rise ˚F =BTUH OutputCFM x 1.08 Temperature Rise ˚C =

Kcal / Hr Outputm3 / min x 18

In order to eliminate the thermal air barrier stratification effect in large volume spaces, discharge air temperature from Series SDF-AF should not exceed 120° (48°C). Discharge air temperature is generally equivalent to the sum of desired space temperature and temperature rise capability of the Series SDF-AF.

III. When determining available Series SDF-AF temperature rise capability, the following formula is utilized:

IV. When determining CF (m3) combustion air requirements, for fuel burning equipment, local jurisdictional mandates shall be followed. In absence of such requirements, determination can be based on the following:

US-IP SI

SCFM =12 CF x 1000 BTUH Input

60 Minutes / Hr Sm3/min =.3398 m3 x Kcal / Hr Input

60 Minutes / Hr

Series SDF-AF SelectorThe table below represents the CFM (m3/min) delivery rate selection of Series SDF-AF.

Simply determine the space net volume and desired air changes per hour, then select the applicable SDF-AF model. As outlined in formula I on page 14, model selection can be ascertained.

To further refine the selection process, based on a design professional’s determination of MBH (Mcal/hr) output requirement, employ formula II on page 14. This result will yield the SCFM (Sm³/min) requirement.

Once determined in this manner, make the applicable model selection and then ascertain the net volume capability, based on the desired air changes per hour.
