From the Chair of the Advisory Board of Regents Mrs. Kathy Lavezzo Dear Friends of Serra,

As I begin my second and final year as the Chairperson of the Advisory Board of Regents, I can confidently say that our engaged and highly accomplished board has volunteered many hours ensuring the betterment of JSHS! This board has quickly developed into a body that is making significant contributions towards Serra’s advancement.

President-Principal Model of Governance - In October 2007, we named an Ad Hoc Governance Committee to look at the President-Principal model of governance for Serra High School. After many meetings, the committee recommended to the Board of Regents the adoption of the model and further recommended Lars Lund as the lead candidate for the President’s position. The Ad Hoc Committee was then empowered by the Board of Regents to design a due diligence process to ensure Mr. Lund was the best candidate for the position. I am pleased to report that in December 2007, Lars Lund was named President of JSHS by the Most Reverend George Niederauer, Archbishop of San Francisco.

In early January 2008, with input from board members and representatives of key stakeholder groups, a search for a new Principal commenced. In April 2008, after a long and thoughtful process, Archbishop Niederauer appointed Mr. Barry Thornton, Serra’s Dean of Studies, as Serra’s new principal, effective July 1, 2008. An enormous amount of work by the Board of Regents went into ensuring our success in adopting this new model. The board developed the process with a relentless determination for doing what was best for JSHS. We asked the tough questions, we probed and debated and we are extremely pleased with the outcome.

Committee Accomplishments - An additional requirement of each board member is to serve on at least one committee of the Board. These committees assist the President by providing advice, counsel and guidance in the following areas:

21st Century Learning Committee (Kevin Dunleavy, chair) – giving advice and assistance regarding the school’s academic program along with reviewing Serra’s progress regarding academic areas addressed in the current WASC Action Plan.

Development Committee (Lori Whitney, chair) – assisting Serra in meeting or exceeding all of the school’s long term fundraising and development goals.

Finance Committee (Ric Rosario, chair) – working with staff and providing expertise and guidance on the budget process. Assisting in finalizing a five-year financial plan that ensures the school remains financially sound, meets its financial goals and practices good short- and long-term financial management.

Phase II Core Team (Bob Olson, chair) – working with the architect to finalize plans for Phase II of Serra’s Master Plan which will consist of art facilities, music facilities, aquatics, academic resource center and additional classrooms (including Science lecture/laboratories). Also, working to ascertain Serra’s fundraising capacity in regard to the Phase II capital campaign.

Buildings and Grounds Committee (Bob Jauregui, chair) – working with the Phase II Core Team to ensure that maintenance and long term capital improvements of the existing facility are incorporated into Phase II of Serra’s Master Plan.

Strategic Planning Committee (Mike Murphy, chair) – identifying short and long-term strategic issues/challenges that set the vision for Serra’s progress over the next three to five years by ensuring a continued high student enrollment. Also involved in the school’s progress in achieving the goals set in the Action Plan approved by the last WASC accreditation visiting team.

Student Recruitment and Retention Committee (Larree Renda, chair) – advising JSHS administration with the design and implementation of a program to continue to achieve full enrollment at Serra.

Junípero Serra High School is truly blessed by the caliber and commitment of our board members who represent alumni, alumni parents and leaders from business education, government and ministry. The board, working with Serra’s Administrators, plays an integral part in furthering our mission of building young men of faith, wisdom and service.

I want to personally thank all the members of the Advisory Board of Regents who have already offered so generously of their time and talents. I look forward to a successful year and thus ensuring Serra continues to stand tall as the premier Catholic educational institution serving the young men of San Mateo County!

Dear Alumni and Friends of Serra,

Looking for inspiration for this year’s Annual Report letter, I decided to take a look back at some of the previous letters I have written. I began with the first one I wrote in 2004. I opened that letter with the following words:

“As Serra approaches its 60th year of service, we remain steadfast in its mission — to provide our students the finest college preparatory education possible and, more importantly, to assist them in their moral, emotional and spiritual development. This mission is alive and well at Serra!”

As we approach the celebration of Serra’s 65th year (school year 2009-10), I am happy to report that our mission is alive, well and thriving. It is no secret that, in all things Serra, I am shamelessly enthusiastic and biased. So, when I say that Serra is thriving, don’t believe just me; look at the following data:

82% of Serra graduates attend 4-year colleges; the remaining students attend local community colleges before •transferring to four-year institutions.

Serra’s 2008 Advanced Placement Passage rate was 81.7% -- far above state and national averages and better than •the pass rates of our Catholic school competitors.

Students’ SAT scores increase every year at levels far above California and National averages. This average reflects •the scores from students in all of our academic programs, not just our honors and AP students.

The 240 graduates of the Class of 2008 earned $6.5 million in scholarships to colleges/universities •nationwide!

The Class of 2008 provided over 35,000 hours of service to the local community during their time at Serra.•

Student surveys indicate that our students are very happy with the dedication and competence of their teachers, the •range and quality of Serra’s extra-curricular programs, the many opportunities Serra provides them for meaningful leadership development, the quality of the academic program and the school’s positive atmosphere and spirit. These are just a few of the reasons why Serra’s student retention rates (freshmen year to senior) are very strong.

Although we are very pleased with our students’ accomplishments, we know that they and their teachers are not content to rest on their laurels. Like Fr. Junipero Serra, whose motto was “Siempre Adelante,” our teachers and students are always striving to move forward in their learning, service and achievement. The support of alumni, alumni parents and our benefactors has made this progress possible.

On behalf of our current and future students, I extend my deepest appreciation and best wishes to all of you who are acknowledged in this Annual Report. Now, more than ever, Serra needs your support to sustain these efforts and to take them to the next level.

In September 2005 the Archdiocese of San Francisco approved bylaws that established Serra’s Advisory Board of Regents. Parents play an important role at Serra, not only in the education of their sons but also in the life of the school. We ask all parents to make a tax-deductible parent pledge for each year their son attends Serra to help us cover the actual costs of a Serra education and to assure the financial stability of the school for future Serra students. Giving back to Serra High School is a natural response for me based on my experience. The close friends I have made at Serra, as well as the faculty, helped to form my high

school years, and the values and education I gained has helped to form who I am today.

Now, my son is a Padre and I hope that he will be able to take away some of the experiences that I have had, along with new ones. Giving to Serra has ensured that the Padre tradition will be around and thriving for my sons and so many other young men. With three boys of our own to share in this tradition, my wife, Michele, and I have made sure we support Serra as much as possible. With our oldest at Serra now, it is amazing to see the transformation of Michael into a “Padre.”

There’s just something special about the place . . .

From the moment our oldest son interviewed with Father Bradley, we knew Serra was the high school experience we were looking for. It had just the right “feel.”

Gregory’s four years at Serra were special in so many wonderful ways. He made lasting, deep friendships that he continues to cherish. The culture at Serra encouraged him to be a well-rounded individual, both mentally and emotionally. He got to know his teachers on a personal level and was challenged to do more than he ever thought he was capable of. The education he received prepared him well for college life at Santa Clara University.

Finally, our son was in a place where it was easy to respect and esteem the leadership of the school, knowing they had a vested and personal interest in his education and well being.

We will always stay connected to Serra in some way. It has become a part of our family. Supporttng Serra is a joy for us, and we are grateful for the unforgettable experiences and education Serra works so hard to provide for each and every student.

My four years of experiences at Serra continue to influence my life thirty-six years later. Then, to have my two sons graduate and share the Serra tradition ~ I could not be happier or prouder.

how CAn you helP?A Junípero Serra High School education provides unique opportunities for young men to develop lifelong habits of learning that prepare them to become leaders throughout their lives. An unrestricted gift to Serra helps support the annual activities of the school and enables the school to direct the funds where they are most needed.

wAys to giVe BACk to serrA

outright giFts: Outrights gifts can include cash, Visa or MasterCard. Gifts can be made online. All cash gifts are fully tax deductible, up to the maximum of 50% of your adjusted gross income. Excess can be carried over and deducted over as many as five subsequent years.

giFts oF seCurities: Gifts of stock offer two-fold savings. Donors pay no capital gains on the increased value of the appreciated stock and receive an income tax deduction for the full market value at the time of the gift. Transferring securities is easy; however, to insure proper tax credit, timely acknowledgment, and accurate processing of your stock donation, please contact the Development Office for a transfer form and more information.

giFts oF reAl estAte: Real property, either in entirety or in part, can be deeded to Serra. It is even possible to arrange a sizable tax deduction by deeding a home or farm to the school now, while continuing to occupy the property for life. All real estate transactions are subject to inspection and final approval by the Archdiocese of San Francisco.

mAtChing giFts: Many employers participate in a matching gifts program. This is a tremendous benefit that can double or sometimes even triple your gift to Serra. Check with your human resources department for matching gift forms. If you are not sure if your employer provides matching gifts, check the link on our website for a list of employers who will match your gift.

memoriAl And honorAry triBute giFts: A gift to the Memorial Endowment Fund can help perpetuate the values and ideals that guided a loved one’s life. Gifts provide a tribute in memory of a loved one’s passing or may honor a person during his/her lifetime. All contributions to the memorial program help fund financial aid for deserving families, assuring the continuance of Serra’s legacy of inclusiveness and diversity.

the FAther serrA heritAge soCiety: Members of this society have thoughtfully included Serra in their estate plans or wills. These gifts of forethought and generosity take many forms: bequests, living trusts, or life income plans, which name Junípero Serra High School as beneficiaries in their estate plans or wills. The Charitable IRA legislation was signed into law on October 3, 2008 and will be in effect for 2008 and 2009. This charitable option pertains to donors who are 70 ½ or older and allows them to move $100,000 per year from their IRA directly into an eligible charity without having to pay income taxes on the money.

As long as the IRA withdrawal is sent directly from the custodian of the IRA to the charity, the gift satisfies the donor’s minimum distribution requirement and is not required to be included on the donor’s income tax return AND benefits the donor’s favorite charity, resulting in a tax-free IRA withdrawal.

Check with your investment advisor about the benefits to you in making this distribution to Serra.
