DO YOU UNDERSTAND?
This question often dives to the heart of our relationships. Do you really understand? Can you understand the things that happen in the lives of other people? It’s called empathy and it’s an important tool for the Christian. Paul calls for it in Romans 12:15, “Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.”
How does it happen?
First we must be less inclined to make snap judgments. Sometimes peo-ple make bad decisions. Bad decisions do not make bad people. When we rush into judgment and are willing to condemn someone else because of a bad decision we are risking our eternity as well as the other person’s. Jesus said, "Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not con-sider the plank in your own eye?” (Matthew 7:1)
Second, consider how the other person might feel. Imagine the shoe be-ing on the other foot. If you were in that person’s position how would you feel? How would you react to the treatment of others? What would it take from someone else to help you recover from this or overcome it in your life? We call this the Golden Rule, “Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 7:12)
Maybe you cannot understand, but you can at least try to empathize. Try to know what it would feel like if you were in their shoes. Try to consider how might be the best way for someone to respond to you and then do that for them. Do you understand?

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the
wrong he has done, and there is no partiality.
Colossians 3:23-25
