Worship begins when the first
person arrives. Please worship
silently through the prelude.

by the congregaon.
*Please stand if able.

This hymn text was created for
the celebraon of the 50th
anniversary of the Shadyside
Presbyterian Church in
Pi&sburgh, Pennsylvania, by its
pastor. He wrote these words
especially for this tune,
originally composed for John
Henry Newman’s text, “Lead,
Kindly Light.”

PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP
“Christ is the love incarnate that casts out fear. As sure as Christ is Christ
a real Christian breaks down barriers among groups at home, among the
churches, in the communities, and to the ends of the earth.”

*CALL TO WORSHIP
Teach us, O Lord, your statutes.
Give us understanding, that we may keep your law
and observe it with our whole heart.
In your righteousness, O Lord,
Give us life. Let us worship God together.

*CALL TO CONFESSION
*PRAYER OF CONFESSION
You call us into relationship and ask that we obey your commandments.
You invite us to walk in your ways.
But our hearts turn away, and we are led astray.
You invite us to choose life and to walk humbly with you,
But we allow people and things, fears and weaknesses,
pride and judgment to get in the way.
(silent prayer and meditation)
In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.
*ASSURANCE OF PARDON
*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE
“WHAT DOES THE LORD REQUIRE OF YOU?”
(All sing together with repeat.)
*PASSING THE PEACE
The peace of Christ be with you.
And also with you!
In the presence of a holy God,
we become aware of the ways
we fall short of God’s best
hopes for us, and the ways we
have hurt others. We turn to
God in prayer, asking for
forgiveness.
We express gratude that
through God’s grace and
Christ’s giving of himself on the
cross we are forgiven and
restored to God and
one another.
We sing in thanksgiving for the
gi0s of forgiveness
and new life.
The Passing of the Peace is one
of the most ancient
responses in worship. Having
received Christ’s peace,
we pass it on.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION THE REVEREND ANNE H.K. APPLE
CHOIR ANTHEM
JUBILATE DEO BENJAMIN BRITTEN (1913 – 1976)
O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands:
Serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with a song.
Be ye sure that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us and not we ourselves;
We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise.
Be thankful unto him, and speak good of his name.
For the Lord is gracious,
his mercy is everlasting: and his truth endureth from generation to generation.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be: World without end. Amen. –Psalm 100
OLD TESTAMENT LESSON DEUTERONOMY 30:15-20 (PAGE 186, OT, PEW BIBLE)
This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
We invite young children to
come to the front at this me.
The children lead the
congregaon in The Lord’s
Prayer using “Forgive us our
debts as we forgive
our debtors.”
Following the Time with the
Younger Church, children PK-SK
may go to C3, while those two
years old or younger may go to
the nursery. Parents, please
take your children out to the
hallway, by the T.K. Young
Room, and sign them in.
Helpers will escort them to
Room 203W in the Jones
Building. If you have babies,
toddlers or two-year-olds, you
will take them to the nursery
area (2nd floor east, Jones
Building).
Before we can know God, God
knows us. Baptism, one of the
two sacraments of the
Presbyterian Church (USA), is in
response to the grace of God,
who calls us to be the people of
God. We welcome children and
adults into the fellowship of
faith. Parents, the
congregation, and children of
the church make promises to
guide, nurture and love the
baptized person.
In ways reminiscent of
the imagery of
Lamentaons 3:22–23,
this popular Chinese hymn text
of “Golden Breaks the Dawn”
skillfully layers short phrases to
create a picture of the dawning
day as a context for affirming
God’s mercies and for seeking
God’s protecon and provision.
The tune name means
“happy peace.”
Copies of this anthem by
Benjamin Bri&en were given to
the Idlewild music library in
memory of Dr. Laurence
Kinney. Dr. Kinney was one of
the saints of Idlewild and of
Rhodes College. A professor at
then-Southwestern, and one of
the most popular Sunday school
teachers at Idlewild, he did
more than just about anyone to
help shape the character of the
college. His mo&o was “With
the privilege of educaon
comes the responsibility to
serve,” and today many
colleges—and even secondary
schools, now make service a
vital part of their curriculum,
thanks to Dr. Kinney.
The sermon is a reflecon on
the day’s scriptures, suggesng
implicaons for our faith
and life.
Throughout me the Ten
Commandments, established by
God and given to the ancient
people of Israel, have been used
in Reformed worship to shape
Chrisan identy. As
Presbyterians we believe that
God’s law is established as a
personal relaonship.
Obedience to the law is about
relaonship with God, not
simply a ma&er of adherence to
law for its own sake. God’s law
is given to God’s people who
have been freed from the
oppression and slavery; freed
for lives shaped in obedience
to the love of God.
.
We bring to God our
celebraons and cares, praying
for the world, the church and
those close to us.

WHAT DOES THE LORD REQUIRE OF YOU? CHOOSE LIFE
(Third in the series “What Does the Lord Require?”)
RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH DR. MONTGOMERY
We believe in God, who gave Moses the Ten Commandments and said,
“I am the Lord your God
who brought you out of the land of Egypt,
out of the house of slavery:
You shall have no other gods before me.
You shall not make for yourself an idol.
You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God.
Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.
Honor your father and your mother.
You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
You shall not covet what is your neighbor’s.
We believe that the Ten Commandments are the law of God
and our guide for faith and practice.

Some day, gonna cross that river.
Some day, gonna set out on my own.
Don’t know where my journey leads,
but I’ll keep on walkin’ till I get me home.
My life is a runnin’ river
flowin’ from the mountains to the distant sea.
I’ve known many hills and valleys,
but when I reach that ocean, I’ll be free.
–based on lyrics from traditional spirituals
Doxology literally means
“words of glory.” Doxologies
have long been used by Jews
and Chrisans to praise God.
Here we honor and thank God
“from whom all blessings flow.”
The invitaon to the Lord’s
Supper is extended to all who
desire to follow Christ,
remembering that access to the
communion table is not a right
conferred upon the worthy, but
a privilege given to the
undeserving who come in faith,
repentance, and love. Even one
who has doubts or whose trust
is wavering is invited to the
table in order to be assured of
God’s love and grace in
Christ Jesus.
“If Thou but Trust in God to
Guide Thee” is a tesmony of
experience. The original seven-
stanza German hymn text
(based on Psalm 55:22) and its
tune were created by the
author/composer at the age of
twenty in thanksgiving for
finding employment many
weeks a0er being le0 almost
penniless following a robbery.
“Rubrics” is a
liturgical suite for organ. Each
movement of the suite is based
upon instrucons (rubrics) to
the services in The Book of
Common Prayer. This energec
toccata is the finale to the suite
and gives affirmaon to the
words of the Prayer of Great
Thanksgiving. The people
respond “Amen” (“So be it!”).
Let the works of jusce,
kindness, and humility begin.

WELCOME TO IDLEWILD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
Whether you are visi@ng for the first @me, or are a long@me
member, we are blessed to have you with us.
You will no@ce that our vision statement begins and ends
with “Idlewild Presbyterian Church is a community in
which....all who enter might find a home.”
We take these words seriously. We strive to be a
community as diverse and hospitable as God’s kingdom.
We don’t all look or act alike; God knows we don’t all think
alike. We don’t all read the Bible the same way. We bring
different ques@ons, and we carry different burdens. But
every Sunday, we worship together as one.
In this grand old church, we do Sunday morning in some
pre>y tradi@onal (very Presbyterian!) ways. We study the
teachings and the ac@ons of Jesus. We sing many of the
same hymns our grandparents sang. Yes, in our preaching
and our prayers, (and many of our newer hymns!) we
wrestle with the challenges of the modern world. I hope
your heart will hear something personal and relevant this
morning—a word of comfort, a spur to ac@on, a call to a
deeper rela@onship with God.
A1er the 8:30 service, join us for Sunday School. There are
lots of op@ons. A1er the 11:00 service, s@ck around. Come
to the fellowship hall for some punch or a cup of coffee.
Introduce yourself to one of our clergy. There are tons of
opportuni@es here to feed your soul and expand your spirit.
Try one out. You never know—you just might be home!
Joyfully,
Pastor Steve Montgomery
