Today we celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Congregation at Duke Chapel. The Congregation was established by Dean Will Willimon to offer an interdenominational church home to those who worship at Duke Chapel not just during semesters, but throughout the year. Its two former pastors, Margaret Via and Nancy Ferree-Clark, and both are par-ticipating in today’s worship service, along with the current pastor, Bruce Puckett. Representatives among the founder members of the Congregation join the procession. During the sharing of communion all sing the hymn written by Richard Hays and David Arcus for the Congregation’s twentieth anniversary in 2005. It is the Congregation that makes Duke Chapel a church, and the relationship between the Chapel and the Congregation has brought many mutual blessings that we celebrate today.

We also give thanks for the Congregation at Duke Chapel and the many ways it enlivens the life of the University with their fellowship, discipleship, and service. A member of the Congregation brings forward a hand-carved Congregation emblem.

In Durham, we remember organizations that provide access to capital for first- time homeowners and small businesses. The ushers bring forward a house key.

sharing of the BreaD anD WineAll those who have become members of Christ’s body through baptism and seek to be united with God and at peace with their neighbor are invited to receive communion. Wine is used for communion. The tradition as understood at Duke Chapel is that the Holy Spirit makes Christ fully present in both the bread and the wine. If you receive only the bread, be assured that you are nonetheless in full communion with Christ and the Church. If you have a gluten allergy, those serving communion nearest to the Memorial Chapel will be ready to serve you gluten-free wafers and wine on request. You may also come forward to receive a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest.

If you would like to receive individual anointing with oil and prayers for healing, ministers will be in the Memorial Chapel during communion.

Draw us in the Spirit’s tether; For when humbly, in thy name, Two or three are met together, Thou art in the midst of them: Alleluia! Alleluia! Touch we now thy garment’s hem.

As the brethren used to gather In the name of Christ to sup, Then with thanks to God the Father Break the bread and bless the cup: Alleluia! Alleluia! So knit thou our friendship up.

All our meals and all our living Make as sacraments of thee, That by caring, helping, giving, We may true disciples be. Alleluia! Alleluia! We will serve thee faithfully. —Percy Dearmer, 1931

We are pleased to welcome the Rev. Lillian Daniel as our guest preacher today. The Rev. Daniel has been the Senior Minister of First Congregational Church of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, since 2004. Before that, she spent fourteen years in Connecticut, going to graduate school, raising a family, and leading two churches. She is the author of the book Tell It Like It Is: Reclaiming the Practice of Testimony, which is the story of one church’s attempt to get mainline Protestants to talk to each other about God. Her newest book, This Odd and Wondrous Calling: The Public and Private Lives of Two Ministers, co-authored by Martin B. Copenhaver, is a humorous and honest look at the ministry. She is a contributing editor to the periodicals Christian Century, and to Leadership. Her work has also appeared in Christianity Today, Books and Culture, the Journal for Preachers, and in the daily email devotionals available at ucc.org. She has taught preaching at Yale Divinity School, Chicago Theological Seminary, and the University of Chicago Divinity School.
