Emission control system mainte-nanceThe “scheduled” maintenance services, listed in bold typemust be done at the times or mileages specified to assurethe continued proper functioning of the emission controlsystem. These, and all other maintenance servicesincluded in this manual, should be done to provide the bestvehicle performance and reliability. More frequent mainte-nance may be needed for vehicles in severe operating con-ditions such as dusty areas and very short trip driving.Inspection and service also should be done any time a mal-function is suspected.

The following maintenance schedules are based on driving15,000 miles per year.To ensure proper emission control performance, youshould continue scheduled maintenance beyond the 10year period shown, by following the same schedule patternas for the first 10 years.

Service station checksThe following items should be inspected by either you or aservice station attendant each time fuel is added:

• Engine oil level. Add if needed. Check Owner’s Manual-See index and look under “Engine Oil” for detailed infor-mation.

• Engine coolant level. Add coolant to reservoir tank alongwith the proper mix if needed. Replace coolant if dirty orrusty in color. Check Owner’s Manual-See index and lookunder “Coolant” for detailed information.

• Windshield washer fluid level. Add fluid to washer tank ifnecessary.

• Tire inspection. Inspect for unusual tire wear and properinflation. Check Owner’s Manual-See index and lookunder “Tire” for detailed information.

CALIFORNIA, MASSACHUSETTS, VERMONT andMAINE ONLY:Regular maintenance schedules; replace timing belt, bal-ancer belt (if equipped on your vehicle) at 60,000 mileintervals. This maintenance is recommended but is not required tomaintain the emissions warranty.

FEDERAL:Regular maintenance schedules; check fuel hoses condi-tion, check and service exhaust system at 30,000 mileintervals. These are recommended but are not required to maintainthe emission warranty.
