We serve a God Who loves us!

Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for Him.”

The Lord is good to those whose hope is in Him, to the one who seeks Him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. — Lamentations 3:22-26, New International Version

FAQ’sWhen are plants able to be dug?

Spring digging season begins as soon as the frost leaves the ground. This usu-ally occurs in mid to late February, however this date can vary year to year by up to two weeks (earlier or later). Spring digging ends as plants begin to break bud and put on new growth. Our spring digging schedule begins with trees that break dormancy earliest: Crab, Pear, Cherry, Lilac and Serviceberry, and ends with Oak and conifers.Summer digging of Taxus, Junipers, Arborvitae and Boxwood begins as soon as soft new growth matures and becomes hardened off. These plants can safely be dug by mid June or early July depending on temperature and moisture conditions. Conifers (Pine, Spruce, Fir and Hemlock) follow a similar pattern. They can be harvested beginning in late July or mid August. Conifers are especially sensitive to damage or loss if they are dug during hot dry weather patterns, so in some years digging is delayed until better conditions arrive.Fall digging of deciduous trees begins as signs of dormancy appear. This is in-dicated by the leaves showing their fall color. Unlike spring, when most species can be dug anytime in the digging season, fall digging follows a sequence that parallels the time that each species begins its journey towards dormancy. The earliest trees include Crab and Locust, which are generally safe to harvest in mid September. Most other species require some hard frosts to show color. From year to year, this timing can vary considerably in central Indiana from early to late October. Pear is the last species on the fall list. Considerable amounts of frost are needed to begin digging pear. Quite a number of species are at risk of loss if transplanted in the fall. Please see Transplanting Guidelines on next page for details.

What size balls are put on trees and how much do they weigh?Average ball sizes and weights are listed below. Ball size may vary depending on our field manager’s best judgment of overall digging conditions. Ball weights can also vary, sometimes dramatically, depending on soil moisture.

The livability of the plant material we grow and sell is of great concern to us. Our experience over the years tells us much about how best results can be obtained. It is our goal to do as much as we can to keep your losses at a minimum. Many factors, some beyond anyone’s control, come in to play between the time a plant is dug and the time it becomes apparent whether it will thrive or not. We do everything within our control to make sure you receive healthy, vigorous plants and we assume you will use good common horticultural sense regarding hold-ing lot operations and/or installation and maintenance practices. If you have questions or concerns about any of these things we are always available to help.

Questions concerning the safety of fall digging certain tree species are frequently asked. Several species commonly used have some risk of loss if transplanted during this time of year. Results will vary widely depending on environmental factors including soil moisture, temperature extremes and temperature fluctuations over the course of the fall and winter seasons. Proper planting techniques and maintenance practices are critical to ensure survival of fall planted stock. Fall dug species with some risk include:

Moderate RiskGolden Rain Tree River BirchTulip Tree HornbeamSweet Gum RedbudLondon Plane Tree/Sycamore HawthornZelkova Black Walnut

High RiskFlowering Dogwood

Black GumAll Oak varieties (except Pin Oak)

We realize that many times you cannot avoid fall planting some of these species because of the demands of the work that you do. Because of the known risks involved we cannot be held responsible for the survival of these species when fall dug.

PROPER PLANTING DEPTHSome nurseries have recently had their trees questioned or rejected by arborists because they were believed to be planted too deep. Planting depth is important to the tree’s health and your sales. Use this guide for planting bare root stock.

Each tree is different, but you can use the bud point, the root collar and the position of the top root as guides to planting depth.

10

Proper Planting Depth cont.Landscapers should plant your finished trees with the top of the ball or con-tainer about 2” higher than the surrounding landscape, with the soil and mulch smoothing the transition.

Bud Point will show as a minor crook in the trunk, just above the ground line. Plant with bud point 1”- 2” above the soil line. Root Collar is a swelling

at ground line where stem tissue transitions into root tissue. Plant at soil line.Highest Root should

be about 2” below soilsurface when planted.

Custom Container GrowinGBlue Grass Farms has become a large producer of custom grown container plants for commercial and INDOT projects. Our capabilities and resources are broad enough to grow just about any plant that is used in the landscape trade in the Midwest in whatever size container is required. Your plants, when ready, can be delivered on our trucks to the jobsite as you need them: all at once or in multiple shipments as each section of the job is ready to plant.

Included in what we can grow are perennials, grasses, sedges, ferns, hostas, daylilies, groundcovers, annuals, woody ornamentals and evergreens, as well as native forbs and graminoids. Container sizes range from 50 cell trays to 7 gallon containers.

Proven Winners® is an international plant marketing firm which provides an infrastructure that links plant breeders and growers with a global marketing network. Hundreds of exciting new Proven Winners® introductions are mak-ing their way into the mainstream of retail and wholesale markets. Given this trend in popularity we have made a

commitment to bring you an ever increasing selection of Proven Winners® ColorChoice® broadleaf evergreens, evergreens and woody ornamentals.

Here are the varieties we currently have in production:

Our ability to deliver finished plants in a timely manner to a job site is totally dependent on having enough notice of when the due date for installation will be. Given adequate time we can grow the required plants here at our nursery using efficient and economical production techniques to provide a finished product at the lowest price possible. The less time we have forces us to use techniques that are less cost effective and the finished product, therefore, will necessarily be more expensive. If lead time is reduced even further, providing the items called for on a particular plant list is dependent on open on-hand inventories from a fairly small group of nurseries specializing in plant plug production. This will certainly increase costs further still. One thing you can always be sure of is that we will always do everything under our control to accommodate your needs and meet your delivery dates.

We are glad to quote any list and discuss possibilities.

Grafted Colorado Blue SpruceGrafted cultivars of Colorado Blue Spruce have very reliable blue color. They also have very slow growth rates compared to Colorado Blue Spruce. Growth rate and mature size of individual trees depends on many factors including vigor of seedling rootstock and environmental conditions before and especially after transplanting. Given decades of growth in favorable conditions it is possible that these cultivars will become quite large. There is no way to accurately estimate mature sizes. Average growth rates per year are noted below for each cultivar, taken from the American Conifer Society conifer database.‘Baby Blue Eyes' Very dense foliage, 1”- 6” per year.‘Bacheri’ Reliably symmetrical growth habit, 6”-12” per year.‘Fat Albert’ Pyramidal, is not “fat”, reliably straight leader, 10”-12” per year.‘Hoopsi’ Very bright silver blue foliage, difficult to form into a shapely tree, < 12” per year. 4’ 109.00 7’ 200.00 5’ 150.00 8’ 235.00 6’ 175.00

Page 81: serviCe Quality availaBility Great value - Blue Grass Farms · serviCe • Quality • availaBility Great value We serve a God Who loves us! ... They are new every morning; great

If Jesus should come at this moment

To catch up with Him in the air,

All those who love His appearing,

Forever to be with Him there.

How would He find you, I wonder.

Watching, waiting, faithful, true?

Dearly beloved consider,

How would it be with you?
