Juliet McGowan, 49, died on March 16, 2011 with her family by her side in Bronx, NewYork. Juliet was born in London, England to Jamaican immigrant parents, Hubert andLucille McGowan on April 12, 1961.

When she was eleven years old, Juliet went to live with her grandmother, Lena Morgan forsix years while her parents established a new life in America.

Juliet was a breath of feisty United Kingdom Air in Jamaica.

The natives welcomed Juliet to the island and nick named her English. She quicklyembraced the mosquito bites that were visible through her white socks she wore to school.

As Juliet’s British accent changed to Patwa, her West Indian roots grew. She loved herJamaican Community as one big family.

Juliet came to the United States of America at the impressionable age of seventeen. However, she stayed close to her heritage. She was not persuaded by others to leave theGod centered environment her grandmother and the elders instilled in her.

At the age of nineteen, Juliet became a mother and made her child her first priority. Julietwas a devoted mother that wanted to instill a positive example to her baby girl. Balancingschool, work, she was very driven and determined to make a better life for the both ofthem. Even though she was a young mother, she enjoyed partying and going out with herfriends. She had a profound love for reggae music by Bob Marley, Dennis Brown and BevesHammond. She loved to dance and sometimes would watch her daughter and try to follow.

Her ethical character transcended in her professional career. Juliet was an employee atYoung Adult Institute (YAI) for over twenty-three years. Over the years she transitionedfrom co-worker to friend. Angela, one of her friends at YAI would bake birthday cakes forJuliet’s family. Her former supervisor, Tom called Juliet every Thursday and alwaysexpressed how much he missed working with her. Lastly, her current supervisor, Neenawould call periodically to subtly remind Juliet that she still resided in the heart of her YAIfamily while on leave.

Juliet devoted much of her time and energy as a caregiver to her family and friendschildren. She found joy being with children, taking them for long walks or watchingmovies with them. Jermaine Jr., and Janiyah would return home, sharing a joke that AuntieJuliet told them. Her other interest included trips to Worcester, MA to visit her family, going on vacations to Jamaica, taking her morning walks in the park, throwing BBQ’s withher friends, watching African movies with her daughter, Kimisha and doing her Sudoku, her jigsaw puzzles and playing video games.

Juliet is survived by: what she proclaimed “her greatest accomplishment”, her daughter,Kimisha Martin; her mother, Lucille McGowan; five sisters, three brothers; elevennephews; six nieces; eighteen grandnephews and nieces and countless friends.

To those I love and those that love me,When I am gone, release me, let me go

I have so many things to see and doYou mustn’t tie yourself to me with tears

Be happy that we had so many years.I gave you my love, you can only guessHow much you gave me in happiness

I thank you for the love you each have shownBut now it’s time I travel alone

So grieve for a while for me if you mustThen let your grief be comforted by trust.

It’s only for a while that we must partSo bless the memories within your heart

I won’t be far away, for life goes onSo if you need me, call and I will come

Though you can’t see me or touch me, I’ll be nearAnd if you listen with your heart you’ll hear

All my love around you so soft and clearAnd then, when you must come this way alone

I’ll greet you with a smile and say,“Welcome Home.”
