DECADENCE, DF.CLlliE AND THE DEATH OF ROCK' N'ROLL

Ve live in strange times. Ten years ago some of us wer e still able to believe in s0mething that resembleda Yhig view of history. Things were getting better and would continue to du s for the f orseeable future . In 1975 it ' fs hard to imagine how things could get much worse . War, economic collapse and starvati n, ww are t0ld, loom around the c~rner. These have been f acts f life for the a' rity of t he world's population for time immemorial, but in cushioned Europe we h...Lve evaded them for a considerable period.

Contemporary popular culture is particularly barren. Nostalgia and imitation are the perameters of current taste. The ersatz and the kitsch reign supreme, whilst , we, the cognoscenti, giggle gleefully as we li~nize the transparently bad. Lacking the imaginat ion, the energy '~f the ins ight to create something of our oWn, we take malicieus delight in parodying the, outrageously r otten pr ducts of an 'earlier generation. 1qe only succeed in displaying the bankruptyy of our own ideas. Nostalgia and decadence are the twin hallmarks of a dying , culture, combining the clashing but complementary sentiments of uncritical r emembrance and conscious mocyery.

Neo-classical and r ena issance artists used the , past to energise and inspire their own creations; r evolutionary changes in art stem from the r ecogniti n of the best of former peri ds and the r ej ecti n of the worst . We exaggerate and parody 'the worst because we have , nothing bet t er to offer. In that we ' do this knowingly, we stand condemned . rtt l east it can be said of writers such as Hemingway, :Burroughs and .~iler

that they lived on t he outer fringes f edge city. Ie don't have the courage to do thtt . 1e ~roach no n w ground . ~e take no risks. \ ~e embrace the worst - the grotesque and the shoddybecause we dare not strive f or the best. We are afraid to f ail.

Some critics would argue that this distortion has occured only at the teeny bop end of the market . Adam Faith 'and Cliff Richard have bsen r ep e by Gary Glitter and David Bowi e ., David Cassidy and The Osmonds ma;i..ntain the tradition of wholesomeness and asexual seXLality. It is hard to say which is worse - a ghoulish c ck r~ck that makes the late Jim Mor rison seem positively na ive or the r epr ession f instinct evident in Richard and Cassidy. The cutesiness nf the Osmonds does Dot bear thinking about.

Rock 'N'Roll ~hdness comic s~id it al l in the strip where the bi-sexual, high drag rock star threat ens to stomp a faggot because the lattp.r/ ,t akes his act seriously. Ie ought, her e , to ask how ftu: the kids take it s eriously. Most English audience~ r egard Jaggpr's flouning with the indulgence of an elder brother who knows that he is really one f us. And when Alice Gooper mutilates baby dnlls, it does not mean that his audience will go out and do likewise . How .ver, it should be r ecognised that the exploration of violence by certain bands is intended

to be expl itative r ther than cath~tic. Th glorificati n of violece 'for its wn sake , like th gl6rificatin n rf arbitary power and brute forc e , is essentially f ascist. F~~tasies 0f control and domina tion need filling victims to be fulfill ed. Cultural dBc~dence tends · t~ be ~he midwife~of f ascism, which . al~hough total ly corrupt c: aims to be the 'n~ f~rce tha t c~ clean up the moral cesspit . As s~ciety, t ttering like a spir~ing top th t is losing its v 'locity, v .ers ver cl s er t t .c llaps e ,. it is up t us t postulat new valu s, and n e'l dirp.ctions. 'Ie have to do it in ur fork, in ur art , in our-'poli tics and in. U:.... lifestyle . The: a l ternatl.ves are too gruesom t~ crntempl ate .
