Organ Prelude: Rigaudon - Gordon Young Mass Setting: Dr. Sparkman Ferguson

Introit Hymn: 828 - How Bright These Glorious Spirits Shine!

How bright these glorious spirits shine! Whence all their white array?

How came they to the blissful seats of everlasting day?

Lo! these are they from sufferings great who came to realms of light,

and in the blood of Christ have washed those robes that shine so bright.

Now with triumphal palms they stand before the throne on high,

and serve the God they love amidst the glories of the sky.

Hunger and thirst are felt no more, nor sun with scorching ray:

God is their sun, whose cheering beams diffuse eternal day.

The Lamb, who dwells amid the throne, shall o'er them still preside,

feed them with nourishment divine, and all their footsteps guide.

In pastures green he'll lead his flock where living streams appear;

and God the Lord from every eye shall wipe off every tear.

repent according to his preaching; and, following his example, constantly speak the truth, boldly rebuke vice, and patiently suffer for the truth's sake; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Second Sunday after Pentecost: O God our defender , storms rage about us and cause us to be afraid. Rescue your people from despair, deliver your sons and daughters from fear, and preserve us all from unbelief; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and ever. Amen. Prayer for the Ministry of Intentional Discipleship - All: Heavenly Father, we thank you that you have awakened your church to hear again the call of our Saviour Jesus Christ to come to him and learn from him. Grant that as we say ‘yes’ to his call to discipleship, your Holy Spirit will enable us so completely to commit all the areas of our lives to his service, that in our personal, family and church lives, our work, recreational and social lives, we would act as Jesus would have acted if he were in our place; in his name and for his sake we pray. Amen. The First Lesson. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Isaiah 40:1-11

{The first reading is a message of comfort and new hope to God’s people. The time of exile in Babylon is coming to an end. A new way is made through the desert, and the mighty Lord comes bringing peace and pardon to Jerusalem. Though all human powers fail, the Lord’s Word will stand. Like a shepherd, God will care for His people.} Reader: A Reading from the Book of Isaiah, the 40th Chapter, beginning at the 1st verse. 1Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. 2Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the L ’s hand double for all her sins. 3A voice cries out: ‘In the wilderness prepare the way of the L , make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 4Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. 5Then the glory of the L shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the L has spoken.’ 6A voice says, ‘Cry out!’ And I said, ‘What shall I cry?’ All people are grass, their constancy is like the flower of the field. 7The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the L blows upon it; surely the people are grass. 8The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand for ever. 9Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice

with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah, ‘Here is your God!’ 10See, the Lord G comes with might, and his arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. 11He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep.

Reader: The Word of the Lord All: Thanks be to God

Psalm 85:7-13 {The psalm both celebrates and prays for the Lord’s gracious favour, God’s forgiveness, deliverance and justice.}

7 Show us your mercy, O Lord, *and grant us your salvation. 8 I will listen to what the Lord God is saying, *for he is speaking peace to his faithful people and to those who turn their hearts to him. 9 Truly, his salvation is very near to those who fear him, *that his glory may dwell in our land. 10 Mercy and truth have met together; *righteousness and peace have kissed each other. 11 Truth shall spring up from the earth, *and righteousness shall look down from heaven. 12 The Lord will indeed grant prosperity, *and our land will yield its increase. 13 Righteousness shall go before him, *and peace shall be a pathway for his feet.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now: and shall be forever, Amen.

The Epistle. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Acts 13:14-26

{In the second lesson we hear how Paul, while on an early missionary journey, preached to the Jews and other worshippers of God who lived in Gentile lands. Accompanied by Barnabas, the apostle responds to an invitation to speak in the synagogue at Antioch of Pisidia, a town in the heart of the country known today as Turkey. He tells how Jesus was put to death but raised up by God. He further explains how this resurrection can be understood as fulfillment of statements found in the Jewish scriptures.}

Intinction This is the administration of the consecrated bread and wine of the Eucharist at the same time, typically by dipping the bread in the wine and placing the moistened host in the mouth of the communicant.

This means of receiving communion is discouraged. However, when it is done the communicant should cross their hands over their chest at the Altar rail to indicate their desire to receive Communion in this way.

The priest administering the consecrated bread will then dip the bread in the cup and place it on the tongue of the communicant.

Confirmed members of the church are encouraged to receive communion in both species, taking a sip from the common cup.

Thank you for your co-operation and govern yourselves accordingly.

Dean Harry Bain

CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL STANDING NOTICES

Reader: A reading from the Acts of the Apostles, the 13th Chapter, beginning at the 14th verse.

14On the sabbath day Paul and his company went into the synagogue at Antioch and sat down. 15After the reading of the law and the prophets, the officials of the synagogue sent them a message, saying, ‘Brothers, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, give it.’ 16So Paul stood up and with a gesture began to speak: ‘You Israelites, and others who fear God, listen. 17The God of this people Israel chose our ancestors and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with uplifted arm he led them out of it. 18For about forty years he put up with them in the wilderness.19After he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land as an inheritance 20for about four hundred and fifty years. After that he gave them judges until the time of the prophet Samuel. 21Then they asked for a king; and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, who reigned for forty years.22When he had removed him, he made David their king. In his testimony about him he said, “I have found David, son of Jesse, to be a man after my heart, who will carry out all my wishes.” 23Of this man’s posterity God has brought to Israel a Saviour, Jesus, as he promised;24before his coming John had already proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25And as John was finishing his work, he said, “What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but one is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of the sandals on his feet.” 26 ‘My brothers, you descendants of Abraham’s family, and others who fear God, to us the message of this salvation has been sent.

Gradual Hymn: 779 - The Great Forerunner Of The Morn

(Tune: Beccles)

The great forerunner of the morn, the herald of the Word, is born:

and faithful hearts shall never fail with thanks and praise his light to hail.

With heavenly message Gabriel came, that John should be that herald’s name,

and with prophetic utterance told his actions great and manifold.

John, still unborn, yet gave aright his witness to the coming Light;

and Christ, the Sun of all the earth, fulfilled that witness at His birth.

Page 8: Services Christ Church Cathedral Anglican/Episcopal Church · St. Christopher Cell Mr. Terrance Fountain 356-7034 St. Dominic Cell Ms. Arlene Hercules 393-1406 St. Epiphany Cell Mr.

Of woman born shall never be A greater prophet than was he,

whose mighty deeds exalt his fame to greater than a prophet’s name.

But why should mortal accents raise the hymn of John the Baptist’s praise? Of whom, or e’er his course was run,

thus spake the Father to the Son?

‘Behold, my herald, who shall go before thy face thy way to show,

and shine, as with the Daystar’s gleam, before Thine own eternal beam.’

All praise to God the Father be, all praise, eternal Son, to Thee, whom with the Spirit we adore

for ever and for evermore.

The Holy Gospel . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Luke 1:57-80

{The passage from Luke’s Gospel concerns the birth of John the Baptist and the song of Zechariah. Great joy is expressed to God for his mercy towards the parents of John - Zechariah and Elizabeth. To the Jews a name was more than a label: it was closely related to the character and nature of the bearer. A first son was usually named after his father. So the neighbors and relatives were surprised when Elizabeth chose the name John because it was new to the family. John” means “God’s gracious gift”. The choice of this name could be understood as a grateful acknowledgement of the unexpected goodness of God in the gift of a son to these aging parents. The second theme is Zechariah’s hymn of fulfillment. God’s new act has happened in accordance with the words of his holy prophets, the promises made to the fathers, the covenant concluded with Israel at Sinai and the oath sworn to Abraham. Each clause in this proclamation of Israel’s history, reached its climax in the approval of the Messiah– the divine plan– to which God is everlastingly faithful in spite of the unfaithfulness of his human agents. National salvation is to take the form of the forgiveness of sins.} Gospeller: The Lord be with you All: And also with you Gospeller: A reading from the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus

Grab your saddle and get ready to ride out! We’re headed for Giddyup Junction where the love of God is grander than the mountains and painted desert. At VBS, students will gallop to new frontiers in the book of Acts. They will ride along as the good news of God’s love spread across the then known world. When Peter preached the gospel on the Day of Pentecost, thousands believed in Jesus. Then Peter learned that the good news of God’s love is for everyone – even an outsider like Cornelius. Another follower of Jesus, Philip, dropped what he was doing to take the Good News to just one man, because God loves individuals. The gospel can reach anyone, even Saul of Tarsus, who was leading a posse to persecute Christians. At Giddyup Junction: Taking God’s Love to New Frontiers, students will lasso the best VBS fun in the West! The good news of God’s love has saving and life-changing power – and that will make a difference on any

CATHEDRAL AND DIOCESAN CALENDAR

Christ according to Luke, the 1st Chapter, beginning to read at the 57th verse All: Glory to Christ our Saviour 57The time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son.58Her neighbours and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. 59On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him Zechariah after his father. 60But his mother said, ‘No; he is to be called John.’ 61They said to her, ‘None of your relatives has this name.’ 62Then they began motioning to his father to find out what name he wanted to give him. 63He asked for a writing-tablet and wrote, ‘His name is John.’ And all of them were amazed. 64Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue freed, and he began to speak, praising God. 65Fear came over all their neighbours, and all these things were talked about throughout the entire hill country of Judea. 66All who heard them pondered them and said, ‘What then will this child become?’ For, indeed, the hand of the Lord was with him. 67Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke this prophecy: 68 ‘Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has looked favourably on his people and redeemed them. 69 He has raised up a mighty saviour for us in the house of his servant David, 70 as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, 71 that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us. 72 Thus he has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors, and has remembered his holy covenant, 73 the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham, to grant us 74that we, being rescued from the hands of our enemies, might serve him without fear, 75in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. 76 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, 77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the forgiveness of their sins. 78 By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, 79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.’ 80The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day he appeared publicly to Israel.

Hymn For Peace 407: As The Deer Pants For Water

As the deer pants for the water so my soul longs after you.

You alone are my heart's desire and I long to worship you

You alone are my strength, my shield, to you alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart’s desire

and I long to worship you

I want you more than gold or silver only you can satisfy.

You alone are the real joy giver and the apple of my eye.

You're my friend and you’re my brother, even though you are my king.

I love you more than any other, so much more than anything.

To watch, and pray, and never faint, by day and night their guard to keep,

to warn the sinner, cheer the saint, to feed thy lambs, and tend thy sheep.

So, when their work is finished here, may they in hope their charge resign; so, when their Master shall appear,

may they with crowns of glory shine.

The Doxology: Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

Praise Him all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

Hymn For The Preparation: 832 - Disposer Supreme, And Judge Of The Earth

Disposer supreme, and Judge of the earth, who choosest for thine the meek and the poor; to frail earthen vessels and things of no worth, entrusting thy riches which aye shall endure;

those vessels soon fail, though full of thy light,

and at Thy decree, are broken and gone; thence brightly appeareth thy truth in its might,

as through the clouds riven the lightnings have shone.

Like clouds they are borne to do Thy great will, and swift as the winds about the world go;

the Word with His wisdom their spirits doth fill, they thunder, they lighten, the waters o’erflow.

Their sound goeth forth, ‘Christ Jesus the Lord!’

Then Satan doth fear, his citadels fall; as when the dread trumpets went forth at thy word, and one long blast shattered the Canaanite’s wall.

O loud be their trump, and stirring their sound,

to rouse us, O Lord, from slumber of sin! The lights Thou hast kindled in darkness around,

O may they awaken our spirits within!

Communion Hymn: 569 - Alleluia, Sing To Jesus! (Tune: Hyfrydol)

Alleluia! sing to Jesus! His the scepter, his the throne;

Alleluia! his the triumph, his the victory alone;

hark, the songs of peaceful Sion thunder like a mighty flood;

Jesus out of every nation hath redeemed us by His blood.

Alleluia! not as orphans

are we left in sorrow now; alleluia! he is near us,

faith believes, nor questions how: though the cloud from sight received him,

when the forty days were o’er, shall our hearts forget his promise,

‘I am with you evermore?’

Alleluia, Bread of angels, thou on earth our food, our stay;

alleluia, here the sinful flee to thee from day to day:

Intercessor, Friend of sinners, earth’s Redeemer, plead for me, where the songs of all the sinless

sweep across the crystal sea.

Alleluia! King eternal, thee the Lord of lords we own;

WE NEED YOU TO MAKE IT HAPPEN: The Cathedral needs some $15,000.00 weekly to remain solvent and to contribute its share to our Diocesan Commitments. We are receiving an average income from Envelopes and Open Collection of $11,100.00 weekly, which is insufficient to cover our expenses and obligations. Your Tithes and Offerings are of critical importance to the operation of Christ Church Cathedral and The Anglican Diocese as a whole. “Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house, and thus put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing.” Malachi 3:10  The Cathedral needs your help! By consistently making your weekly contribution, it will help us plan our expenses and cash flow better; so we encourage all members to be faithful in your financial support. Of course, whenever you can increase your level of contribution it will help to close the funding gap and offset any shortfalls from week to week. We look forward to your continued support.

FLOWERS ARE GIVEN TO THE HONOUR AND GLORY OF GOD by the Wardens, Vestry and People of Epiphany Anglican Church in thanksgiving for the installation of Rev’d. Fr. Atma Budhu as a Canon of The Cathedral and by the Altar Guild in celebration of the Feast of St. John The Baptist, Patron Saint of the Diocese.

CORPORATE COMMUNION: The Anglican Church Men will make their Corporate Communion this morning at the 9:00 a.m. Service. They will hold their monthly meeting this morning in The Chapter Room at 11:00 a.m.

St. John the Baptist came to tell his countrymen of Jesus the Son of God the Father which is the same thing that Jesus commissioned the healed man to do - Go and tell your home boys (and girls) what God has done for you. And Jesus is still instructing us this day to be like John the Baptist and the healed man and tell each other of the things that God has done for us. It would not be idle boasting therefore if I tell again of how God brought me, almost entirely unscathed, out of an accident in which the vehicle I was driving was violently struck and knocked completely off the road and totally wrecked. This was just a little over two months ago and I can say today that my claim, out of that accident, in damages has already been satisfactorily settled. I also woke up this morning as you did. Can there not be universal belief with me that God is good and must be praised?

Recessional Hymn: 827 - Hark! The Sound Of Holy Voices

Hark! the sound of holy voices, chanting at the crystal sea,

alleluia! alleluia! alleluia! Lord, to thee:

multitude, which none can number, like the stars in glory stands,

clothed in white apparel, holding palms of victory in their hands.

Patriarch, and holy prophet, who prepared the way of Christ king, apostle, saint, confessor,

martyr and evangelist; saintly maiden, godly matron,

widows who have watched in prayer, joined in holy concert, singing

to the Lord of all, are there.

They have come from tribulation, and have washed their robes in blood,

washed them in the blood of Jesus; tried they were, and firm they stood; gladly, Lord, with thee they suffered;

gladly, Lord, with thee they died,

and by death of life immortal they were born, and glorified.

Now they reign in heavenly glory, now they walk in golden light, now they drink, as from a river,

holy bliss and infinite: love and peace they taste forever, and all truth and knowledge see

in the beatific vision of the blessèd Trinity.

God of God, the One begotten, Light of light, Emmanuel,

in whose Body joined together all the saints forever dwell;

pour upon us of thy fullness, that we may for evermore

Go And Tell What God Has Done For You!

On this Sunday we remember St. John the Baptist the patron Saint of our part of Jesus’ church and the prophet who was born, through a showing of God’s awesome power, “to bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God, to bring fathers and children together again, to turn disobedient people back to the way of thinking of the righteous and to get God’s people ready for Him”. GNT

That is what St. Luke wrote in verses 16-17 of Chapter 1 of the Gospel of Luke, one of the scripture readings appointed for the day.

THE CATECHIST WRITES

15

It is to be noted that St. John (not the gospeller) who is generally referred to as St. John the Baptist specially came into the world because he had the special task to do of leading his wayward countrymen back to their Lord by pointing them to the Saviour of mankind Jesus, the truly begotten Son of God.

After St. John the Baptist had formed the bridge over which his fallen and backslidden countrymen were able to find their way back to God through God’s son Jesus Christ, his role has been taken over by all those who accepted the call of Christ to become firstly, apostles and up to this day, primarily, the clergy of the church. And for us here at Christ Church Cathedral the duties that were set out for St. John the Baptist are now expected from the Dean and his Curate. They are faced with the tasks of getting our delinquent members back to the Lord, seeing that the fathers whom we celebrated last Sunday attend to and support their children and to prepare us all for Jesus.

A major hurdle that St. John the Baptist faced was his countrymen’s adherence to the Law which kept them from appreciating the salvation they needed but thought so little of. St. John met a people locked up as prisoners because of the Law; and today’s St. Johns are faced with people locked up as prisoners but not of the Law as were St. John’s people but prisoners of the devil, Satan, with his temptations to do evil and the glitter of the world.

Another scripture reading appointed for the second Sunday after Pentecost is contained in Galatians chapter 3 at verses 23 – 29. We ourselves cannot leave all the St. John the Baptist functions to the St. Johns of today. All of us, whether we admit it or not, benefit from the grace and omnipotence of the Lord. All of us in waking up each day must accept that as one of the many gifts we get from the Lord through His Son our Saviour. And in another of the scripture readings for this day we learn that Jesus expects us to tell one another of the things that He has done and is doing for us.

After Jesus had healed a man who was demon possessed the man thought that the only right thing he could do was to join Jesus in His mission; and he begged Jesus to let him go with Him. Jesus told the demon freed man that joining up with Him in His travellings was not the best thing to do. In verses 38 and 39 of chapter 8 of the Gospel of St. Luke we find out what Jesus expects of us all.
