Services During Holy Week
Palm Sunday - March 20 - 10 AM - Worshipers meet under the portico for the Announce-
ments of the Day and for the Palm Procession into the Church. Our worship includes music
led by the Worship Band, and the reading of the Passion Narrative from the Gospels.
Maundy Thursday - March 24 - 7:30 PM - Service of Holy Communion, a special time of
“togetherness” with the Lord and with one another.
Good Friday - March 25 - 7:30 PM - Service of Tenebrae. A dramatic use of light and
sound heralding the Gospel, the message of Jesus’ death for us and for our salvation. This
ancient rite of “Tenebrae,” the Latin word for “darkness,” is a ritual that was first celebrated
in the fourth century. The darkness reminds us of the darkness that covered the earth at the
time of the crucifixion. The darkness also serves to remind us of the spiritual darkness of
the world, and the need for God’s light.
Easter Sunday - March 27 - 8 AM and 10 AM - The Feast of the Resurrection of Our Lord
- festive worship with the Risen Lord in Holy Communion. Worship includes our Adult
Choir offering the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s Messiah at
both services.
Outreach For Children …
Easter Egg Hunt - Saturday, March 26 - this special event for
children and families is a happy prelude to Easter. This year we
again plan two sessions, at 9:30 and 11 AM. Do you know a
young family that doesn’t come to Sunday School? Do you know
a child that has never heard about Jesus? Please invite them to our
Egg Hunt! Help us share with them the “old, old story” of how
much God loves them. (More information, page 3)

From the Interim Pastor:
The only question for Easter
This year, I want there to be only one question about Easter, the
resurrection of our Lord. I would like for this question to be in our
minds and hearts as we approach the solemneties of Holy Week
and then celebrate the joy of Easter.
The question is not “What happened?” We know what happened.
The question is not “How did it happen?” We don’t really know and it doesn’t matter.
The question is not “Why did it happen?” We know the answer to this one.
The question is not even “What does it mean”? (Although that is part of the question.)
The question for this Easter is “What does it mean for you?” In sermons, I must think about the whole congregation, all the people who are in the
pews on a particular Sunday. People of different ages, different backgrounds, men,
women, children, people of different ethnic heritage. Preaching has to have a “general,”
a “for all” aspect to it.
But our personal piety is just that; it is “personal.” It is how each of us as individuals
takes the message of the Gospel into our lives.
I can preach about what the text for the day “mean;” I can tell you what the church
teaches; I can attempt to explain the Gospel of Jesus Christ in that larger context. You
can pray about, reflect on and live under what it means for you.
The Gospel is not “personal” in the sense of being individualistic; it is for the whole
world; but it becomes “personal” as we make it active within us as individual persons, as
we believe, pray, worship and serve. When we distribute the sacrament of Holy Com-
munion, the words are always “The Body of Christ, given for you,” “The Blood of
Christ, shed for you.” That “for you” is important; a clear reference to the individual
person – you – kneeling at the altar rail or receiving the consecrated bread and wine, the
body and blood of Christ.
So the question for Easter this year is “What does this mean for you.” Jesus was cruci-
fied, died and raised from the dead….for you. He brings his message of salvation…to
you. The Holy Spirit creates and guides the Church … for you. Meditate, pray on that. Then remember that you are not alone in the faith. We are the church, in the Lutheran
Church of Our Savior, in our New Jersey Synod, in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America; with our ecumenical partners, and with the one, holy, catholic and apostolic
church – a vast and mysterious entity composed of all believers of all time.
But it starts with our Easter question: What does this mean…for you?
See you in church,
Pastor Austin

March will be a very busy month at Nursery School! Our color weeks continue as our
threes dress in the color of the week and bring a show and tell item of that same color.
We will be telling stories of Jesus that coincide with colors such as the feeding of the
5,000 (orange goldfish represent the fish), the stilling of the storm for blue week, etc.
We will also be giving each child a ride on our wooden donkey as we shout “Hosanna”,
wave palms and learn about Palm Sunday. We will also gently tell the
story of the cross and the resurrection of Jesus. You may hear us say-
ing “Hosanna” and “Jesus is Alive!”. Look for some strategic rocks
placed in our school area which have faced on them. Jesus told those
who wanted to silence the people that “if they people do not cry out, the
rocks will”. The children love the idea of rocks talking. Have a blessed
Easter and Saint Patrick’s Day.

Music to inspire you during Holy Week …
Our wonderful choir, worship band and soloists will be offering a variety of
music to point your hearts and minds to Jesus this Holy Week at Church of
the Savior. On Palm Sunday – Passion Sunday, March 20, the Worship
Band will lead our service with hymns both new and old including the
beautiful worship chorus, “At the Foot of the Cross.” Maundy Thursday
will feature our choir singing a special Gospel presentation based on the
hymn “A New Commandment” combined with the reading from John 13.
Our Good Friday service opens with Rick Henly and David Kline per-
forming “The Old Rugged Cross” and closes with David’s very moving rendition of “Were
You There?”, as well as our choir singing the magnificent “Crucifixus” from Bach’s “B
Minor Mass.” And on Easter, the annual musical high point is our choir singing Handel’s
“Hallelujah Chorus” accompanied by David Rutherford at the organ. And as we invite
you every year, please join us at choir rehearsals Wednesday evenings at 6:30PM if you’d
like to sing the “Hallelujah Chorus” and some other wonderful music as well!
From the ELCA: Presiding Bishop visits refugee camp in Jordan ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton, met with Syrian refugees living in Jordan’s
Za’atari refugee camp in December. Eaton was with Archbishop Antje Jackelen of the
Church of Sweden and Gloria Rojas Vargas, former church president of the Evangelical Lu-
theran Church in Chile on a visit to a camp run by The Lutheran World Federation. “The Syrian refugees are incredibly resilient,” said Eaton. “We met a family where the
father lost two of his sons in the Syrian war. He had worked 30 years to have his own farm
and lost it all. A young girl was showing me images of burned bodies on her cellphone. And
yet the parents are doing everything to keep their children engaged and out of trouble. Some
have painted their houses, trying to bring some beauty to such a stark place. It’s incredible.”
“The suffering of the people in Syria is real,” said Eaton. “Bombs are falling on these peo-
ple who just want to live their lives.” The church leaders also met with Jordan’s prime minis-
ter, Abdullah Ensour, and several members of the Jordanian cabinet.
