    Collect

    Eternal God, you crown the year with your goodness

    and you give us the fruits of the earth in their season: grant that we may use them to your glory,

    for the relief of those in need and for our own well-being; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

    who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

    one God, now and for ever. Amen.

    First Reading – Deuteronomy 26.1-11

    Moses spoke to the people, saying: When you have come into the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, and you possess it, and

    settle in it, you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from the land that the LORD your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a

    basket and go to the place that the LORD your God will choose as a dwelling for his name. You shall go to the priest who is in office at that time, and say to him, ‘Today I

    declare to the LORD your God that I have come into the land that the LORD swore to our ancestors to give us.’ When the priest takes the basket from your hand and sets it down before the altar of the LORD your God, you shall make this response

    before the LORD your God: ‘A wandering Aramean was my ancestor; he went down into Egypt and lived there as an alien, few in number, and there he became a great

    nation, mighty and populous. When the Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us, by imposing hard labour on us, we cried to the LORD, the God of our ancestors; the

    LORD heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. The LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with a

    terrifying display of power, and with signs and wonders; and he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. So now I bring the

    first of the fruit of the ground that you, O LORD, have given me.’ You shall set it down before the LORD your God and bow down before the LORD your God. Then

    you, together with the Levites and the aliens who reside among you, shall celebrate with all the bounty that the LORD your God has given to you and to your house.

    Gospel – John 6.25-35

    When they found him on the other side of the lake, they said to him, ‘Rabbi, when did

    you come here?’ Jesus answered them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for

    the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.’ Then they said

  • 4

    to him, ‘What must we do to perform the works of God?’ Jesus answered them, ‘This

    is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.’ So they said to him, ‘What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What

    work are you performing? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, “He gave them bread from heaven to eat.”’ Then Jesus said to them, ‘Very

    truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which

    comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.’ They said to him, ‘Sir, give us this bread always.’ Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.’

    Second Hymn

    1. Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father,

    there is no shadow of turning with thee; thou changest not, thy compassions they fail not, as thou hast been thou for ever wilt be.

    Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see;

    all I have needed thy hand hath provided, great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me.

    2. Summer and winter, and spring-time and harvest,

    sun, moon and stars in their courses above, join with all nature in manifold witness

    to thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

    3. Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;

    strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

    Third Hymn

    1. Fill your hearts with joy and gladness, sing and praise your God and mine!

    Great the Lord in love and wisdom, might and majesty divine!

    He who framed the starry heavens knows and names them as they shine.

    2. Praise the Lord, his people, praise him!

    Wounded souls his comfort know; those who fear him find his mercies,

    peace for pain and joy for woe; humble hearts are high exalted, human pride and power laid low.

    3. Praise the Lord for times and seasons, cloud and sunshine, wind and rain;

    spring to melt the snows of winter till the waters flow again;

    grass upon the mountain pastures, golden valleys thick with grain.

    4. Fill your hearts with joy and gladness,

    peace and plenty crown your days; love his laws, declare his judgements,

    walk in all his words and ways; he the Lord and we his children: praise the Lord, all people, praise!

    Words: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b 1926), based on Psalm 147 Music: Regent Square, Henry Thomas Smart (1813-1879)

    the best known (long out of print) are So God Said to Me and Seen God

    Lately?. Formerly a Methodist local preacher in the Melton Mowbray

    circuit, he now lives in Thornton Cleveleys, Lancashire (near Blackpool) and continues to write plays and

    preach regularly in the North Fylde circuit. Ever ready to turn traditional

    religious thinking inside out, in this talk he proposes to explore the

    likelihood of stories of Jesus - usually regarded as historical events - being

    parables about Jesus, and to assert that when it comes to the church's

    teaching, doctrine and creeds, nothing is set in stone; but our personal

    Christian faith depends on what we choose to believe.

    Langham Parish

    Church – Your Church:

    Summer 2016 Survey

    It is really important that St Peter and St

    Paul is the church the people of Langham want us to be and I am pleased to say

    there has been a healthy response to our summer survey that will help us to be

    that church in our village community. My huge thanks to everyone who took the

    time to fill in the survey. Headline findings suggest people see St Peter and

    St Paul as welcoming, inclusive and part of the community. They also suggest

    willingness to make some changes to our current church services; so the current

    service order will be reviewed by the end of this year. In addition, the survey gives us some ideas about how we can

    better put the church, and the space it offers, to the service of community

    needs in the village. The next step will be a presentation and display on the survey

    results at our Harvest Coffee Morning on Saturday 8th October. May I

    encourage you to join us in discussing and developing ideas to help us work up

    our future plans.
