As more of the individuals we serve reach 60 years of age and beyond, the need for a Senior Center at Open Door became evident. Naturally, many of our seniors are just not very interested in working anymore! They move more slowly and prefer a quieter setting. Socializing with others who share similar memories of their youthful years ranks high as a pastime. Thanks to the support of management and a large grant awarded last fall, our work came to fruition, and Open Door’s new Senior Center officially opened on June 3rd.

The Senior Center is specially designed to be functional and appropriate for use by the individuals in this generation, our “works of art.” With comfy couches and décor that was selected by our seniors, the warm ambiance of the Center is reminiscent of the 1950s- 1960s. These ladies and gentlemen enjoy being able to pursue their individual interests, whether it is crossword puzzles, adult coloring books, playing Uno or watching the Three Stooges. vintage music. Programming at the Center is specifically targeted to our seniors, their physical needs and the interests of their generation. Having a cup of coffee over the morning paper every day is a real highlight for some! Recent activities have included chair (seated) exercising, bingo, board games, manicures and going for a leisurely walk. Episodes of vintage TV shows, movies and music from the ’50s and ’60s are available for their entertainment. Our Senior Center Grand Opening was held on Tuesday, June 11th, complete with coffee, donuts, taking photos and dancing to tunes of the ’50s. Feeling festive, some ladies donned vintage hats! A fun time was had by all.

Everybody was kung fu fighting. Those cats were fast as lightning. In fact, it was a little bit frightening, but they fought with expert timing.

OK, maybe they weren’t fighting, but they were practicing self-defense at Dojo Dynamics. A group of 10 clients, all with the goal of being able to protect themselves in the threat of danger, learn from owner and operator Scott Francis’s black-belt skills for an education in martial arts.

The clients have been filled with joy as Scott has done nothing but be the most gracious instructor. His ability to stay focused on the task while still bringing lots of fun and jokes makes him the ideal teacher. The clients have loved working with him on their skills, and his warmth and humor have made each client ask one question that gets asked again and again: “When’s the next class?”

So many of the clients buzz about their self-defense class, chatting with their friends and case managers about what they did and how excited they are to get to the next class. Shawn M. of the Pine House always bows to fellow class members, and Rosie B. always calls the staff that run the class “Daniel-san” and “Ashley-san” as a reference to the classic movie, The Karate Kid.

The class begins with an honorary bow to the sensei, Scott, as a sign of respect, and then they begin stretches and some exercises to warm up before practicing hand strikes, kicks and blocks. The group has tried things like rolling on a cushy mat, as if they were rolling away from a prospective attacker. They have tried punching and kicking punching bags and many various defensive maneuvers. We always review at the beginning and ending of every class when these techniques are appropriate to use, to remind the clients not to just fool around with the skills that are supposed to protect them rather than hurt friends or family.

The whole class has been a blast for all involved. It has brought so much joy to our clients to be able to try things they have seen in the movies and know how and when to use them. We have struck up a wonderful partnership with Dojo Dynamics and Scott. We look forward to continuing these classes for a long time to come and see our clients sharpen their skills while promoting their health and well-being.

Who doesn’t love running across that “special bargain” or “fantastic find,” then taking it home, putting it in that perfect spot that was just meant to be, and admiring it and your frugal achievement? Hunting and scouring through the local garage/yard/rummage sales, searching for and finding these “treasures,” can be thrilling and satisfying. This was certainly true for our friend and Open Door family member, James F. Voga. James joined our Open Door family back in 1964. And since that time, he often could be found with a little cash in his pocket, walking up and down the streets of Sandwich, pulling his wagon and looking for treasures. He would hit each and every sale he came across. He was also known to find a treasure or two that had been thrown out and discarded. You know what they say… “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” James would see its intrinsic beauty and offer it a new life and home. Or, he would generously give these treasures to his friends and family. He would say, “I saw it and thought of you!” Yes, James was a collector. He collected just about anything that caught his eye or interest, but he was particularly fond of John Deere tractors, large rigs, large farming equipment, and model cars. Every year, James looked forward to the Sandwich Fair, where the John Deere tractor tent would display their newest equipment and sometimes sell model replicas which he would just have to buy. James proudly displayed literally hundreds of these treasures throughout his home, which he shared with his longtime friend and housemate, Mike. James also loved to color. He could spend hours at his table coloring intricate designs in his coloring books, which he would kindly give away to the special people in his life. In addition to garage sales and coloring, James’ heart was shared with the “other” love of his life, Miss Pat. Miss Pat and James have been a couple since 2004. James proposed to Miss Pat in December of 2018, and they had plans to have a commitment ceremony this summer in front of all of their family and friends. Even though the commitment ceremony will not happen, James’ family and friends are planning a “celebration of life” party in its place. James’ life was full of treasures... and not just the ones he would find at garage sales. James was loved and will be missed by many. The one thing that reassures those of us who grieve James’ passing is that we were blessed to have James in our lives. We are James’ family and friends. We were lucky enough to have found our own treasure… James F. Voga.

James V. is voted 1986 Client of the Year.
