40th Anniversary Gala - It was truly a fabulous night! On September 19th, Roundup staff, clients, families, friends and volunteers had a wonderful evening under the stars celebrating our 40th Anniversary. Everyone came together to enjoy the festivities, make new friends and visit with old friends. We had a delicious dinner while being serenaded by the Ron Jolly Trio. A compilation of pictures from the past 40 years displayed throughout the evening on monitors. The slideshow was a wonderful reflection of the many people that have come together to provide a better life for people who have developmental disabilities. Several parents who have had children served by Roundup spoke of their experience. Star Awards were given for Lifetime Community Partner - Bestway Disposal, Volunteerism - Roland Buteyn and Bill Smit, and Lifetime of Dedication – Carol Osborn.

After dinner, telescopes to view the night sky were provided by Denver’s Astronomical Society-although there was a small interruption with the sprinklers! We also held a Silent Auction with a great variety of items to bid on. The items creating bidding wars included a Sea Turtle Sculpture, Broncos tickets and a snuggly blue crocheted throw. There were lots of happy winners who walked out the door that night. The gala raised more than $25,000 for Roundup Fellowship programs and services! Thanks to our sponsors, donors, bidders, attendees and Gala Committee.

Jolee took it upon herself to develop, design and implement a class lesson on North Africa South-west Asia in the West Classroom. Jolee hand created flags for the 23 countries for the partipants to illustrate, a dynamic power point and a trace handwriting worksheet for the participants.

Jolee’s Success StoryJolee Wendorf became acquainted with Roundup Fellowship in 2009 when she was 19. Upon meeting our Colorado Springs program directors, it was decided Jolee would visit the Roundup homes to see which was the best fit. After getting to know Jolee, it was decided she was to become part of the Fortune Circle home. While living at Roundup, Jolee had the opportunity to learn and grow in various areas of her life. She expanded her independent living skills, learning to cook meals and complete household tasks. Jolee improved her reading skills and to this day, is still working on reading comprehension.

Jolee attended Dougherty High School and increased her vocational skills by working various volunteer positions at the ARC, as well as helping as a teach-er’s assistant. Jolee graduated high school in 2010 and transitioned into an adult host home in June of 2011 when she turned 21. When asked what she liked best about Roundup, Jolee stated “I liked being a big sister” to her peers and the relationships she formed with staff. Jolee has been in her adult home for 2 and a half years, and her transition has been a success.

As an adult, Jolee has worked up to having 5 hours of independent community time and 10 hours of home alone time. In her spare time, Jolee enjoys electronics, such as her cell phone and ipod. She has a talent for fixing things others deem useless. On weekdays, Jolee attends Possibilities at Discover Goodwill. There, Jolee participates in arts and crafts, the independent living skills apartment, and helps the staff with various tasks. Jolee is a member of the council and she asked for a suggestion box, which is currently in the works. Last month, Jolee ran for mayor of the “fictional town” at Possibilities. Although she did not win the election, she did obtain the position of secretary. Jolee credits Roundup Fellowship for supplying her with a strong foundation in which to move forward and for helping her obtain the skills needed to be a functional part of the adult world.

I’ve worked for Roundup Fortune House for more than three years, and I have a dream. But first, let’s talk about the ones we serve. If it weren’t for them, where would we be?

I have been blessed with the opportunity to take the youth that I work with to church on Sunday mornings over the past two years. I love watching them praise God and behave so well while we are there. I believe that sharing your passions with the clients you serve can be a priceless gift to share. For me, it is singing. I sing on the praise team at my church, also in the choir and randomly at work. Several residents have learned many of the songs we sing. Two weeks ago,

Our cookbooks make great Christmas Gifts and support a great cause!

most of the praise team was gone, so two of the boys joined me in leading our church in praise. It was truly an amazing experience. One of the boys sang every single word without missing a beat.

I have also been blessed to be able to share another passion of mine with several of the boys at Fortune house. My other passion is running. I have been able to take residents to a local running club and train them to walk and run the 5k (3.1 mile) course. We have one resident with over 30 runs with the club. We have also had the opportunity to enter into several local 5k races including our own Be A Superhero 5k. I have had the opportunity of taking 7 different residents to the running club already. It is great seeing the guys get excited about health and fitness. And the excitement on the faces when you exclaim, “ YOU MADE IT 3 MILES WITHOUT STOPPING!”, it’s priceless.

I am really excited about working with our residents on vocational skills and getting jobs. I have had the opportunity to watch several young men get jobs and do well. One has an actual pay by the hour job, and another is able to talk to friends and neighbors to line up mowing jobs to save money. These young men are eager to please and will work harder than anyone I know. That brings me back to the dream. I have a dream to have a Roundup Store where we can train our youth to use a cash register, take orders, give change, and learn additional job skills. But, I’m not talking about a mock store. I’m talking about a real store, where there would be actual clients. It could be something as simple as a Sno-cone stand or a snack shop. Can you imagine the possibilities and community support that could come from something like that? This is the first I’ve mentioned this dream. I don’t think it’s too big.
