Do you remember when someone invited you to join a group that has been important in your life? What is the worst that can happen? People do not go to church for a variety of reasons. Some are wary of Christians, having known a hypocrite or two who wore the Christian badge. Others feel that Sunday morning is the only time they have to unwind from work; they don’t believe that worship and Christian fellowship can actually be rejuvenating. Some have simply fallen away from a faith they held in the past, thinking that one day they will get back to God. Jesus commanded those who follow him to go and make disciples, teach- ing them everything he taught. The command came with a promise. Jesus said, “I will be with you.” All who follow Jesus testify that this is true. Simple invitations are an essential element of disciple-making. “Would you come to church with me on Sunday?” “We are beginning a new evening Bible study. Would you like to come?” Or,“ We have a fantastic preschool at our church. Maybe your grandchildren would enjoy it!” Your friend or neighbor may not come, but you have planted a seed with them. It is a seed that can lead to another conversation at a later time. Who is there in your world that needs an invitation to come to church or to one of our activities or groups? Reflections from Pastor Connie

October 2012

Dear Ward Parkway Family,

I have a favorite old preacher story, and this is how it goes. Each Sunday morning, Bill went to Sunday School and church. Each Sunday morning,

as he backed out of his driveway, he waved to his neighbor, Bob as Bob prepared to go to the lake to fish. Each Sunday morning, Bill wondered

why Bob went fishing every Sunday morning instead of going to church. This went on for more years than either of them could remember. One particularly fine day, Bill rolled down his car window and stopped the

car. He said, “Bob, why don’t you go to church on Sundays?” Bob looked up and smiled, “Because you have never asked me.”

Have you ever considered the power of a simple invitation? Do you

remember when someone invited you to join a group that has been important in your life? What is the worst that can happen? People do not go to church for a variety of reasons. Some are wary of Christians, having

known a hypocrite or two who wore the Christian badge. Others feel that Sunday morning is the only time they have to unwind from work; they

don’t believe that worship and Christian fellowship can actually be rejuvenating. Some have simply fallen away from a faith they held in the

past, thinking that one day they will get back to God. Jesus commanded those who follow him to go and make disciples, teach-

ing them everything he taught. The command came with a promise. Jesus said, “I will be with you.” All who follow Jesus testify that this is

true.

Simple invitations are an essential element of disciple-making. “Would you come to church with me on Sunday?” “We are beginning a new

evening Bible study. Would you like to come?” Or,“ We have a fantastic

preschool at our church. Maybe your grandchildren would enjoy it!” Your friend or neighbor may not come, but you have planted a seed with

them. It is a seed that can lead to another conversation at a later time.

Who is there in your world that needs an invitation to come to church or to one of our activities or groups? What is keeping you from asking? I challenge you to step out in faith and ask. The Lord is with you.

In Christ’s love,

Connie

Too busy now to send a note of thanks?

Or watch a flock of southern flying geese?

Too busy for a walk along the banks

To breath a fresh-aired sigh of calming peace?

Too busy to wrap up in comfy fleece

And read romantic stories by the fire?

Or make a friendly call and find release

In laughing words of hope that will inspire?

Too busy then, to dream new dreams towards to aspire!

Too busy now to hold a sickly hand?

Or mail a card to someone in distress?

Too busy for a change in what you’ve planned

To touch a child who needs a warm caress?

Consumed by all you think creates success

And cannot feel the breeze that sways a tree?

Or hear the quiet that reduces stress?

Or taste the salty spray beside the sea?

Too busy to become what you were meant to be!

And so Lord, we pray…

Slow us down.

We seek new eyes to view wonder.

We seek vision to see your will.

We seek energy to accomplish your work.

Amen

Session Update August 2012

† Christian Education 9:30-10:25 on Sundays

*Adult Bible Study Room 2 The current study is based on Dr. David Jeremiah’s book Living with Confidence in a Chaotic World:

What in the World Is Going On? This study brings a message of hope and confidence from the priceless counsel of the Word of God. Dr. Jeremiah answers our most urgent questions on staying connected, staying centered, staying consistent, staying committed and staying convinced. The study shows us that the power

and love of Almighty God, we can live with confidence in this age of turmoil. All are welcome to join this small group study of the bible.

Preschool Board Harriet Plowman reported on the Preschool Board goals for the year: institute Preschool Board, rewrite bylaws, stop the decline in enrollment. Enrollment is higher this fall compared to last fall and the day has been extended from 2 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. The Board is working on the budgeting process. Harriet will work with Ashlea Wirken and the Directors to publicize the preschool and build community within the preschool. Deacon’s Report A report from the deacons was received with gratitude. Acts 16:5 Bob Liepsner reported that four people from the Acts 16:5 team went to a potluck supper with the Acts 16:5 groups from other churches. There was a good exchange of ideas. Connie reported that there was a dinner with the families in our church with young children at which they talked about serving these families and attracting families to the church. Christian Education Lynne Crossette reported that Children’s Sunday School will be held from 9:30 am to 10:25, starting September 9. Children’s Church for the older children during the worship service is being discontinued. Children will be encouraged to stay in worship and busy-bags will be provided. Missions & Nominating Jim Durig reported that the Mission Committee will be meeting to decide on how to spend the mission money. The Nominating Committee will be meeting to fill three vacancies on the session. There are two vacancies on the Trustees and one on the board of Deacons. This committee will also fill vacancies on the preschool board in the future. Outreach Ashlea Wirken reported that an email went out to the neighborhood association about preschool, Vacation Bible School and the Paul Mesner Puppets. We will also be doing "Trunk or Treat" on Halloween from 5-7pm. We hope for participation from the preschool and people in the neighborhood. Operations Steve Nelson reported that we are over budget on improvements but there are still many more things to be worked on. He is making a list of projects for next year. Karen Wiederaenders suggested that we take some of the memorial funds for upkeep on the church. Worship Steve Guthrie reported that the choir sang about half the time this summer. They will resume full time participation on September 9. Mileigh Hall asked for a copy of the sermons on CD. Steve thought this would be a good way to serve members who do not use computers and he will pursue it. Fellowship Nancy Lusk handed out a preliminary list of events for the fall: August 19 - VBS pool party at the Lochmann's, August 25 - Ladies Night Out, September 9 - Sunday School Kickoff, September 27 - Paul Mesner Puppets, September 30 - Neighborhood/ Church Picnic, November 9 & 10 or November 16 & 17 - Dinners Eight, December 2 – Chili and Caroling Pastor’s Report The session approved scholarships for Hans Guthrie, Bryce Lochmann, Rachel Lusk, Thomas Lusk and Barnett Rucker. South Broadland Presbyterian asked us to partner with them on Operation Christmas Child. There was discussion about the number of community projects that we are involved in. Ed Rucker is working on amending our bylaws to bring them in line with the new PCUSA Book of Order. There will be a Presbytery meeting September 15; Lynne and Diana will attend. Stan Ott of the Acts 16:5 Initiative will come to Northminster Presbyterian on September 11.
