Last weeks of inspiring exhibitionFor the first time in the Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre’s history all the ceramic artists represented in the permanent collections are on display. The School of Arts Gallery features a cornucopia of clay, from the exquisite insect vase of local Denman artist Nicola Purcell (from the Max Watters Collection) to the abstract coal sculpture of Sydney’s William Lungas (winner of the Muswellbrook Art Prize for Ceramics in 2009) and includes nationally well-known ceramic artists such as Greg Daly, Aleksander Danko, Lorraine Jenyns, Michael Keighery, Gudrun Klix, Janet Mansfield, Danie Mellor, Ray Taylor and Peter Tilley. Many local ceramicists are also featured, such as Dorothy Burns, Enid Cryer, Betty Gleeson, Sue Lawson, Jean Mitchelhill, Lyn Nash and Jan Pryke.

Works have been selected from both the Max Watters and Muswellbrook Shire art collections including a number of ceramics which were originally part of the Denman Shire Art Collection. The exhibition covers the period during which ceramics in Australia moved from being thought of as craft producing predominately functional objects such as bowls and platters to the dynamic sculptural works of today.

Murrurundi artist Jean Davies takes us on a journey down the Pages River from its source west of Murrurundi to its junction with the Hunter River south of Segenhoe. This series of watercolour, ink and pastel works by one of the Upper Hunter’s premier exponents of these mediums will allow you to be reacquainted with the familiar or to explore new scenery through the eyes of an artist who delights in all the river has to offer.

Miniatures XVI: Local artists explore the small Miniatures XV1: This is the sixteenth exhibition by local Upper Hunter artists exploring the discipline of the miniature. This year sees a wealth of talent take on the challenge and works include not only paintings, but also the mediums of embroidery, photography and drawing. Miniaturisation is alive and well in Muswellbrook.

The exhibitions are on display at the Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre until Sunday 27 October 2013.

Margo Humphries exhibition at Chocolate HillsBy Laura Sykes

Chocolate Hills Tartuca Espresso Bar Bistro in Denman is renowned for its delicious, handmade chocolates and authentic Italian fare. But the café also supports many local artists, and this month is exhibiting artworks from the celebrated Margo Humphries.Hailing from Lake Macquarie, Margo has been creating artworks from an early age, and taught herself to paint by studying other artists’ works and experimenting with different techniques of her own.

Lake Macquarie visual artist and 2013 Hunter Business Awards Finalist, Margo Humphries, is now holding her next solo art exhibition at Chocolate Hills Tartuca Espresso Bar Bistro, Denman until 31 October 2013. At the age of twelve, Margo embarked on her artistic career when she won the “Children of the Manning” Youth Award, part of the Walkom-Manning Art Prize, with her work “Wingham Brush”.

Since then, Margo has received many prizes and much acclaim, including being selected as one of ten artists for the Mattara Festival’s Inaugural Outdoor Art Exhibition, while her “Look up in the Sky Tonight” was draped over Newcastle Panthers in October 2011. Last year Margo’s t-shirt design, “The Line Up”, made the final twenty in Redbubble’s SXSW T-shirt Competition for New York band The Big Sleep, as well as becoming the “Social Media Guru” for the Hunter Arts Network committee, helping promote the group’s quarterly art bazaars.

Margo’s work is astounding in its versatility, having tried all mediums and all subject matters in her quest to find her own personal style, reflecting the energy and meditation that Margo feels when creating an artwork. Her colourful abstract and landscape paintings have been displayed in many exhibitions and homes through her passion for displaying her works.

All artworks in the Chocolate Hills exhibition will be for sale, and perfectly complement the sun, coffee, delicious Italian food, fresh juices, gelato and of course, the famous chocolates that Chocolate Hills Tartuca Espresso Bar Bistro has to offer.

New hospital to benefit from Charity RodeoBy Laura Sykes

The Muswellbrook Charity Rodeo and Campdraft has been a favourite event of the local scene for more than forty years, and this year’s event will be no different. Like most longstanding-rodeo events, it began with a committee of like-minded people who enjoy and participate in the many aspects of the sport. Jillian Parkinson says that it made sense to turn this passion into a charity event.

“It is a great way for our cowboys and horsemen to display their skills; it’s an action-filled event for the community to enjoy and it’s a chance for us to help raise funds for local charity organisations. It’s our way of doing something for the sport we love and for our community. Our goal each year is to be bigger and better, and raise more money for charity.”

It’s a goal that is certainly well on the way to being met. The event this year boasts over $30,000 in prize money with a full-rodeo program that includes bull riding, saddle and bareback bronc riding, steer wrestling, roping events and barrel racing, alongside junior events in steer riding, roping and barrels. “This year we are also running a feature event – the ‘Over 40’s Bullride’,” says Jillian. “It’s for all those stubborn, old cowboys that want to prove you’re never too old. No matter what your favourite event is, we will have it on show and performed by our nation’s finest rodeo competitors.”

The event attracts some of the big names in the sport each year, usually attracting more than 300 competitors in the rodeo events. There will be many national champions past and present along for the ride this year, including locals such as Heath Nichols - Australian Steer Wrestling & Rope & Tie Champion – and Luke Parkinson - Australian Junior All-Round Cowboy and Steer Ride Champion.

This year’s rodeo and campdraft will help raise funds for the Muswellbrook Hospital Auxiliary. “The members of the auxiliary work tirelessly to help provide much-needed funds for the hospital and are currently working towards funding for a new hospital in the area,” says Jillian. “There is a petition for the cause, and we will have a copy of it at the entry of the showgrounds for people who want to show their support for this cause.”

The rodeo will be held on Saturday 26 October at the Muswellbrook rodeo grounds. Cost of entry will be family $30, adults $15 and kids and pensioners $5. Power FM will also be running a family- pass giveaway in the week prior to the rodeo, so make sure to tune in to see how you can win free entry to this great event.

Australia’s brumbies star in new book By Laura Sykes

Kathryn Massey, founder and president of the Hunter Valley Brumby Association, recently teamed up with fellow brumby-owner Mae Lee Sun to create Brumby: A Celebration of Australia’s Wild Horses. The book features stunning photographs of the country’s wild horses, and plenty of good yarns to go along. It was this that author Kathryn Massey had in mind when she first came up with the idea for the book, but she says there were still surprises along the way.

“The story of Wildfire, the lone stallion of a herd of brumbies at Brooms Head, really tugs at the heartstrings. I think it gets everyone crying.”

Brumby is published by Australian Independent Publishing Company, Exisle Publishing, with all proceeds from royalties going back into helping rescue and rehome more brumbies. And it was the horses themselves, Kathryn said, that gave her the inspiration she needed to create the book.

“We wanted to give the Brumbies a voice and to show people how incredibly beautiful they are, and how much they have touched the hearts of many people who are privileged enough to work with them and willing to give them a go.”

As owner of two brumbies herself, Diesel and Bella, Kathryn knows the benefits of brumby ownership as well as anyone. These hardy horses are well suited to the Australian environment, are good doers, and are able to turn their hooves to anything from showing to camp drafting or pony club.

Their high resistance to disease and illness makes them the ideal horse to care for, and has proven useful for increasing hardiness in many other breeds as well.

All proceeds from the book, which retails for $45, go directly to the Hunter Valley Brumby Association to help rescue and rehome more brumbies. Along with their other merchandise, which includes caps, shirts and jumpers, the book is raising much-needed funds for this great cause.

“We currently rescue Brumbies that have been trapped from Kosciusko National Park and in the three years since we started taking in Brumbies we have rescued eighteen so far. The future, hopefully a much bigger sanctuary on the way so we can expand our operations and rescue and rehome even more Brumbies each year.”

Brumby: A Celebration of Australia’s Wild Horses is available online from http://www.hvba.com.au/ or wherever good books are sold.

Professional styling enhances signature Scone residenceThe local property market is heating up and prospective buyers will be delighted to see one of Scone’s signature properties listed for sale. Located in Gray Street in Satur the magnificent 4-bedroom residence has sweeping views back towards the racecourse and is perfectly designed to appeal to the growing family. The EVENT Storeroom has been commissioned to style the property to ensure maximum buyer appeal.

“In metropolitan areas it is increasingly common to style properties for sale,” says The EVENT Storeroom director Amelia Wilkinson.

“Professionally incorporating designer furniture is the most effective way to spark interest and attract buyers, create a stylish coordinated look that stands out from other homes and maximise a home’s potential sale value”.

Rural areas have a large number of high-end properties for sale, but there has been a gap in the local market when it comes to styling them.

Vendors had to look to suppliers as far afield as Sydney or Melbourne if they wanted assistance in hiring furniture or obtaining specialist styling advice. The EVENT Storeroom recognised the market need and stepped up to meet it.

“We can complement your existing furniture or create a totally new look to suit your property,” says Amelia. “You would be surprised at the relatively small cost of this service. The return on investment can be remarkable.”

“If you want your property to stand out from the crowd, it is a service you should seriously consider when you are preparing your house for sale. We have an extensive product range, and have been commissioned to style a number of properties ranging from $400,000 to $1million plus; we are well placed to assist vendors”.

Listing agents for 52 Gray Street are Landmark Townsend (Adam O’Regan), McCallum Inglis (Angus Patterson) and Ray White (Stephen Bell).

For further information about property styling and how The EVENT Storeroom can maximise the appeal of your property to potential buyers please contact Amelia Wilkinson 0400099761 or [email protected].

Australian Army Infantry Museum - SingletonThe museum serves as a mirror to the Infantry Corps. It is a place where young soldiers can learn about the history behind the names they are familiar with from high school or perhaps about the military service of a family member. Gallipoli, Passchendaele, Kokoda and Long Tan are all brought to life along with less familiar campaigns like the NSW Marine Light Infantry deployment to Peking in 1900.The display space is divided into two main areas. The lower floor features exhibitions on the history of operations, from the Sudan in 1885 through to our current deployment in Afghanistan today. The mezzanine level features the ‘tools of the trade’, that is, the small arms and their associated training aids - how they have changed and developed and how these changes have influenced the tactics, techniques and procedures of the Regiments of the Royal Australian Infantry Corps.

Opening times: 9am - 4pm Wednesday to Sunday. Closed Monday and Tuesday.

Go pink with Kazz for breast cancer By Laura Sykes Continued from front page

Think pink on 25 October for the McGrath Fundraiser Charity Auction Night! The event, which opens doors at 6pm at the Muswellbrook Workers Club, is assisting young women all over the country to become more breast aware by raising much-needed funds and awareness.

The funds raised will go towards the McGrath Foundation’s goals in placing breast care nurses in areas where they are most needed.

Organiser Karen Jennar says that the inspiration behind this event came from her friends. “I lost a friend to breast cancer earlier this year. She left behind a five-year old son, and another two friends had both breasts removed last year. It really hits home when they are the same age as you, and it is happening too often these days. We need to get to know our bodies and notices any changes and get it checked out.”

This is not the first time that Karen has raised funds for the cause, after successfully campaigning for pink Hi-Viz shirts to be allowed onsite at Macquarie Generation where Karen works. “We now have over 230 pink shirts, and from every shirt ordered by staff $10 was donated to the foundation,” she says.

The theme of the night is ‘Go Pink with Kazz’. “Bring something pink, wear something pink,” says Karen, “the more outrageous the better. There will be prizes for the most creative, most outrageous and best dressed.”

Newcastle band The Flicks will be providing live entertainment after the auction, which will see many items sold to raise the much-needed funds. Wine, photo shoot vouchers, two nights for two guests at Mansfield cottage in Barrington Tops, celebrity-signed caps, CD’s, shirts, one night for two guests at Shoal Bay Resort, a 4WD recovery kit valued at $400, and much, much more will be going under the hammer for the charity. Auction company Ezybidz will also be providing auction items on consignment on the night. With all of this ready to go, Karen is optimistic that a large amount of funds can be raised.

“Every dollar helps. There’ll be a raffle as well, so all you have to do to be involved is come along, have a fun relaxing night with friends and buy some raffle tickets.”

With all her hard work campaigning for such a worthy cause, Karen says she has been overwhelmed with the support she has received. “I would like to thank everyone for their support, Macquarie Generation, work colleagues, businesses in Denman, Muswellbrook, Scone, Aberdeen and Singleton for their generous donations, it has been just overwhelming.”
