Don’t forget YOLO!As the days wane, the trees don their vibrant hues and a chill creeps into the air. Not the bite of wintry blusters just yet, but just a nip to let us know a new season is on its way. Whilst it’s sad to say goodbye to summer, Driving Miss Daisy has decided to welcome the turn of the season and celebrate it for its positives: the cooler evenings mean it’s easier to sleep at night; the vibrant hues of red and gold look incredible against a clear blue sky; and ripe produce ready for harvest reminds us how amazing Mother Nature is. Heading towards the cooler seasons doesn’t mean it’s time to hibernate. At Driving Miss Daisy, we believe that no matter how old you are (or how cold the temperature) it’s important to stay active and young at heart for as long as you want to. Here are a few ideas: • Walk outdoors through the crunchy autumn leaves piling high on the ground.• Organise a games afternoon with Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit, Monopoly, etc. • Try a new physical activity such as yoga, tai chi or aqua aerobics.• Resurrect a neglected hobby that you once loved.• Spend time browsing at your local library or a good bookstore.• Listen to your favourite music – loudly! • Gather friends for a trip to the cinema. • Treat yourself to lunch at a café. • Have a good laugh with friends. What delights one person may seem completely uninteresting to someone else, so if you give something a try and don’t like it, move on to something else - it’s all about keeping life interesting with things to look forward to. As the young often say – YOLO – you only live once! Driving Miss Daisy is committed to helping our clients get out and about, so you can live life to the full and enjoy every moment. No matter whether you need to get to an appointment, run a few errands or have an activity you’d like us to help with, please call us today to discuss – we look forward to seeing you soon! As mentioned in the last Age Concern publication (autumn edition) this exercise class helps to prevent falls and strengthen muscles. Great Lego Tip OutOn the 1st April at 6pm at Te Takere a fine group of potential Lego super constructors assembled. Age Concern was ably represented by Graham, Diane B, Diane W, Mary Wilson (Accrediting Visitor Volunteer). We also had great support from Jan Smellie and the star of our team Yash.

It was fortunate that Yash joined our team for a number of reasons namely he had actually handled Lego bits before. He successfully lowered the average age of the team to at least under the retirement age and finally he had a notion of how to build the two challenges that were set for our team.

The rest of the team had vital functions to perform, like sorting out the bits into the numbers required and Graham, in his special hat took charge of public relations and cheer-leading.

Unfortunately we did not manage to win any prizes but we had a lot of fun participating. It was really great to see the crowd of amazingly well behaved children and their parents, especially dads thoroughly enjoying themselves. The winning constructions were fabulous, imaginative and a credit to them.

Accredited Visiting Service Hi, my name is Aimee Pettigrew, I currently work for Age Concern Horowhenua.I do a wide range of jobs like answering of phones, taking down appointments, Assessments for Total Mobility Vouchers, attending Roading and HALT Meetings in the community.

My main job is the AVS Service which stands for Accredited Visiting Service.

In 1989 Age Concern New Zealand was contracted by Government to establish an Accredited Visiting Service to reduce loneliness for older people in residential care.As a result, a pilot visiting service was set up by Age Concern Wellington in 1990, and then by other Age Concerns around the country.

In 2005 the service specifications of our national contract were refocused on visiting socially isolated older people living in the community. The service does however offer support for rest home residents experiencing high levels of loneliness, and for clients transitioning from the community into residential care.

The overall aim of AVS is to decrease levels of social isolation and loneliness, to reduce physical and mental health risks, and to increase social participation, health and wellbeing for older people.

So my job is to match these older people with carefully selected, trained, caring, monitored volunteers, and once they are matched up we ask that the volunteer visits for 1 hour per week.

Horowhenua Breathe Easy Support GroupThis organisation is for people in the Horowhenua community who suffer from a variety of respiratory conditions. Respiratory disease in New Zealand is acknowledged by the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ as being “the big problem that no one is talking about.”

Respiratory disease includes a number of different illnesses such as Asthma, COPD, Chronic Bronchitis, Lung Cancer, Bronchiectasis and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. These illnesses all affect the quality of the sufferer's life. Breathe Easy Support Group is also for the people who care for the person with the illness.

Education about respiratory disease, the importance of understanding and managing the condition and are an integral part of the programme offered at Support Group monthly Meetings. We aim to educate and inform by a variety of speakers and outings. Our first meeting for the year is always an Education Session when a Respiratory Facilitator from Compass Health demonstrates and speaks to us about medications and devices, stressing the importance of using both correctly, to attain maximum efficiency.

Respiratory diseases can cause people to become isolated and we try to encourage them to join our group. A group meets once a month for morning tea and a chat. There is a Carers Group which is specifically for those people who are involved in caring for a family member or friend with a respiratory problem. This group meets every month over afternoon tea for fellowship and support.

Horowhenua Breathe Easy Support Group meets on the fourth Thursday of each month at 10am in the Hudson Room at the Cosmopolitan Club.

We begin with morning tea and the programme usually includes a variety of educational, interesting and informative speakers. For our AGM in June we’re going to be entertained by a local duo. We welcome visitors to all our Support Group Meetings.

NEWS FROM AGE CONCERN KAPITIBy Dermot Whelan, Manager Age Concern Kapiti

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEEAD) was launched on June 15th, 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organisation at the United Nations.

The purpose of WEAAD is to provide an opportunity for communities around the world to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect.

What is Age Concern Kapiti doing for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day?On June 15th, we will have an all day display (9am - 4pm) in Coastlands Mall. Tristine Tilly, our Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention Co-ordinator and Sonya Sloan (ex Paraparaumu Senior Police Officer whose portfolio was looking after the elderly) will be there to answer questions and give advice. We will have plenty of resources for people to take - pamphlets, brochures, facts and figures about elder abuse etc. We will also have our Annual Street Appeal on June 15th. This is our 3rd annual appeal and our goal is to have 13 collection points on the day - 3 at Coastlands Mall, Pak ‘N Save, The Warehouse, New World Kapiti Road, Paraparaumu Library, the Aquatic Centre and the Railway Station in Paraparaumu. In Waikanae we will be stationed outside both supermarkets as we also will be in Otaki. We welcome any people who are keen to be collectors for us on the day. Just call the Age Concern Office on (04) 298 8879.

What is elder abuse and neglect?Elder Abuse and Neglect is a single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person.

Elder Abuse is a violation of Human Rights and a significant cause of injury illness, lost productivity, isolation and despair.

What does Age Concern do to prevent elder abuse and neglect?Age Concern offers free, confidential, specialist Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention Services in 23 centres throughout New Zealand. They also provide education about elder abuse for those working with older people/kaumatua and other interested groups. Age Concern works with other agencies such as health services, needs assessment services, the police, and banks to ensure the best possible outcome for the older person/kaumatua. “Confronting and reducing elder abuse requires a multisectoral and multidisciplinary approach” (Active Ageing, A Policy Framework, WHO, 2002)

Elder abuse key trendsEach year, Age Concern’s Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention (EANP) services receive more than 2,000 referrals of older people who may be facing elder abuse or neglect. That’s eight referrals every working day. About three quarters of these situations are confirmed to involve elder abuse or neglect. Abuse is also identified by other agencies including

health providers, the police, lawyers, banks, other community support organisations, and other non-Age Concern Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention services. We know that only a small proportion of elder abuse incidents come to the attention of an agency that can be of assistance.

Incidence of elder abuseAn analysis of data from the New Zealand Longitudinal Study of Ageing concluded that 10% of the population aged over 65 years who are living in the community have experienced abuse.A large community based study in the U.K. found that 2.6-4% of older people experience abuse each year. When this prevalence figure is applied to the population of New Zealanders aged over 65 years, it equates to two-three older people being abused every hour.

Elder Abuse can be classified into different types. Often the abuse experienced by an older person/kaumatua involves more than one type of abuse. In

the cases seen by Age Concern’s Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention Services over the last three years;• Three quarters involved psychological abuse• Over half involved financial abuse• 15-20% involved physical abuse• 15-20% involved neglect• 15-20% involved self-neglect

Age Concerns report that they are dealing with an increasing number of older people who have become the victim of scams. Scammers are targeting lonely older people who have assets, forming friendships with them (particularly through romance scams) and then requesting money for various hypothetical emergencies. In many cases, it is the family who contact Age Concern for assistance. The older person is often content to accept their financial loss in exchange for the preferred friendship.

Who is involved?• Almost half of abused older people are over the age of 80• Forty percent of abused older people live alone• More than three quarters of alleged abusers are family/whanau; and we know that family/whanau members continue to abuse their older relatives even when that person is in residential care.

Almost half of alleged abusers are adult children. Abusers are as likely to be female as male.

How does abuse affect older people/kaumatua?For about half of the older people/kaumatua seen by Age Concern’s Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention Services, their health was significantly affected by the abuse. Two out of every five abused people experienced a significant reduction in their

independence, loss of confidence and self esteem, and reported feeling very frightened or anxious and emotionally distressed.

About a quarter of abused older people experienced long-term inability to cope by themselves and poor health, sometimes leading to the need for residential care.

On another subject, we all know New Zealand has an ageing population. New Zealanders are living longer, healthier and more active lives. The ageing of our population is often portrayed in terms of increased costs; including costs of health care, residential care and NZ Superannuation.

The positive contribution that is made by older people to our public, families, employment, volunteering and community, deserves much wider recognition and respect.

Older people work, volunteer, provide care and participate widely in community and family life. Many families, communities and organisations depend on older people for their skills, knowledge and experience; older people provide care and support to thousands of others who benefit from their assistance. With one of the highest rates of over 65s workforce participation, older New Zealanders are significant economic contributors through taxation, spending and saving. Older people form an important, growing market for the providers of goods and services.Every aspect of New Zealand life is greatly enriched by the active involvement of those over 65.

Age Concern New Zealand has produced a very informative pamphlet titled “Valuing Age, The Economic contribution of older New Zealanders” which draws on existing research, including “The Business of Ageing” (“The Business of Ageing update 2015”, Office for Senior Citizens) and shows the positive economic impact and contribution made by older New Zealanders.

The Age Concern pamphlet makes the emphatic case that every aspect of New Zealand life is greatly enriched by the active involvement of those over 65. For instance, the influence that older people have as consumers (i.e. the amount of money spent by older people on goods and services) in 2011 was $14 billion, and this figure is expected to rise to $39 billion by 2031. The annual value of unpaid and volunteering work, grand parenting and other care - valued at $16.10 per hour - in 2011 was valued at $9 billion, and is expected to rise to $20 billion by 2031.

Let’s value ageing!

Funding retirement can be toughAround 75% of people aged 65+ own or partly own their home. However, their median income is just $20,900, with many depending entirely or largely on New Zealand Superannuation.*

While this is enough to get by, for many it doesn’t cover unexpected expenses such as house maintenance, car repairs, or taking a trip to visit family. Kiwis’ expectations of retirement have changed over the years. We’re living longer, healthier lives and we’re looking for an active, independent retirement.

If you’re looking for a way to live a more comfortable retirement, or to help relieve day-to-day expenses, a Heartland Home Equity Loan could help. It’s available to

homeowners, aged 60 years and over and allows you to enjoy the wealth tied up in your home, without selling it, or needing to make regular repayments. The money can be used for anything from home renovations to a holiday overseas. And the amount to repay the loan will never exceed the value of your home. That’s a promise.*Census results 2013

Carpenter

An elderly carpenter was ready to retire. He told his employer-contractor of his plans to leave the house-building business and live a more leisurely life with his wife enjoying his extended family.

He would miss the pay cheque, but he needed to retire. They could get by.

The contractor was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favour. The carpenter said yes, but in time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He resorted to shoddy workmanship and used inferior materials. It was an unfortunate way to end a dedicated career.

When the carpenter finished his work the employer came to inspect the house. He handed the front-door key to the carpenter, saying “My gift to you”. The carpenter was shocked. What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently.

So it is with us. We build our lives, a day at a time, often putting less than our best into the building. Then with a shock we realise we have to live in the house we have built. If we could do it over we’d do it so much differently. But we cannot go back...

You are the carpenter. Each day you hammer a nail, place a board, or erect a wall.

“Life is a do-it-yourself project” someone has said; Your attitudes and the choices you make today build the ‘house’ you live in tomorrow.

Build wisely!

Work as if you don’t need the money.Learn as if you will live forever.Love as if you’ve never been hurt.Dance as if nobody is watching.

What do the Kapiti Coast and Whakatane have in common? We both have beautiful beaches and both are close to a larger city - Rotorua in the case of Whakatane and Wellington for the Kapiti Coast. The size of our populations is similar too.I am sure we have a lot more in common but we do differ in one significant area.Healthcare - more specifically - we do not each have a fully operational hospital.Whakatane has. Its hospital provides medical, surgical, paediatrics, obstetrics, gynaecology and mental health services - and is currently undergoing a $64 million dollar redevelopment. Its website states that it has 160 beds.Tauranga Hospital is relatively close to Whakatane too. Admittedly Tauranga’s patients will be drawn from further afield, especially from the west and north-west.Some might argue that we have Kenpuru Community Hospital within relatively easy reach. So - what services does Kenepuru offer?Again - according to the internet - “Kenepuru Hospital provides secondary services catering to the communities North of Wellington including Porirua and Kapiti.”

It has a total of 40-41 beds as well as 12 psychogeriatric beds. It is said to provide medical, surgical, maternity and child healthcare services as well as services for the elderly, rehab and outpatients. It also conducts outpatient clinics. Kenepuru’s Accident ND Medical clinic is NOT an emergency department. In an emergency dial 111. They can treat you if you’ve had an accident or if you need urgent medical treatment and can’t see your own doctor. They also add that you may have a long wait.

Kapiti Health Centre offers outpatient clinics, has a maternity unit and obstetrics (quoted to have two beds) and is the base for district health nurses. It also offers some mental health services. So why does Whakatane have its own fully operational hospital when residents on the Kapiti Coast and even Porirua have to make do with very limited health services? It is almost as if the closer residents are to Auckland City the better all services are.

Kapiti’s population is increasing, with more than 25 percent of our total population aged 65 plus. The issue of access to good quality healthcare is surely one of the fundamental rights we all should be able to enjoy, yet it does seem as if residents in some parts of the country have an advantage while others are disadvantaged.

Age Concern Kapiti has just appointed Kirsty Justice, Bachelor of Social work student at Whitireia Community Polytechnic as a year 2 placement opportunity. Kirsty is a student member of Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers. She has a wide range of skills including running

her own business, and more recently working alongside the supported bail social worker, gaining valuable insight into the youth justice system. Last year she spent time alongside the members of the social work team at Masterton Hospital, gaining an understanding of the many disciplines working within the environment. Kirsty will spend most of her 3 month placement working alongside Tristine Tilly, our Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention Co-ordinator, as well as getting a good, general understanding of how Age Concern Kapiti operates in terms of promoting and delivering our core services to the elderly residents of Kapiti.

Age Concern Kapiti has a strong, mutually beneficial relationship with Whitireia Community Polytechnic. Our previous two student placements, Shona Cording and Brittany Hobcraft, have been excellent, proactive, innovative student placements for us, and have contributed significantly to our ability to deliver timely and effective services to the community. We have no doubt that Kirsty will continue the fine achievements of her predecessors.

Welcome, Kirsty, to Age Concern Kapiti.

Signal Singers to appear at Kapiti Playhouse on 12th JuneAn Age Concern Kapiti fundraiser on Sunday June 12th will feature the Signal Singers performing at the Kapiti Playhouse Theatre.

Noel Signal’s singing career began some 50 years ago and over a period of 10 years he sang principal roles with the NZ Opera Company, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, NZ National Orchestra and many major NZ Choral Societies. At the age of 39 it became impossible on a part-time basis to perform to the standard Noel required of himself when performing alongside international soloists and conductors. With no chance of a full-time singing career in New Zealand, Noel decided to cease all professional engagements.Noel did continue to sing occasionally, produce and conduct amateur productions including “The Company of Musical Players” which raised over one million dollars for charities while under his musical direction. At age 80 Noel needed a challenge, so what better than to start voice training again. Some three years ago he formed the “Signal Singers” that has now developed into a choir enjoyed by many people in various venues on the Kapiti Coast.Noel as twice been invited to perform as guest soloist at the Wellington Male Voice Choir concerts, and has also given their members tutorials in voice training.

AGE CONCERN NZ MANAWATU OUTREACH UP-DATEGreetings from sunny Manawatu. I am so loving these amazing sunny autumn days. Our Age Concern NZ Manawatu Outreach Service would like to welcome our new CEO Stephanie Clare.

Recent months in the Manawatu have been action packed with lots of new networking meetings, new community prevention programmes to implement and our forever growing referral lists.

Manawatu and our timeline for 2016:Neighbours day celebrations were held on the 19th of March this year with the Stroke Central Carers group joining with our AVS volunteers. Getting to know new neighbours is just so important to support each other, form new friendships or renew old acquaintances. We hosted an afternoon tea which included general information sharing and lots of laughs.

Vintage House Parties (VHP) This project is to continue again this year and is a joint venture with the City Council, Public Health Services, Residential Housing Office PNCC and Neighbourhood Watch within the Council Housing Complexes.

The aim of the Vintage House Party is:1. to increase utilization of community lounges in council facilities2. to improve mental and physical well-being for those living alone by providing opportunities for connectedness3. to provide an opportunity to give health messages4. to provide an opportunity for safety message for those living alone5. to provide a strong social support that helps foster positive attitudes towards ageing

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD): Plans are under way to celebrate our WEAAD on the 15th June 2016 in Palmerston North. This year we are working in collaboration with Grey Power again and BUPA Health Care Group, who will be joining us at our staffed information and awareness raising booth outside the Warehouse. Some of the other events

that are also taking place; a static displays in all five libraries will be set up; poster/badges distributed to rest homes; the City Central Clock Tower lighting turned purple on the day and advertising in local newspapers. I am so excited about these joint community events.

Women’s Self Defence Course Our plans for the Women’s Self Defence course are set for the 25th and 26th of July 2016 at the Leisure Centre in the Manawatu. With recent abusive attacks on our elderly it is my belief this course is a must for older people. At present the course is for women aged 65 plus, it will be free of charge and runs over two morning sessions. It’s an opportunity to learn new skills, gain tools for self-protection and empower individual’s confidence in every day independent living. You are welcome to enrol for this event by ringing or emailing our service on (06) 355 2832 or emailing me on [email protected]

Age Friendly Palmerston North (AFPN)The first committee meeting for the year on the 10th of February saw a good turn out and lots of interesting discussion. One of the goals for this year is to present the inaugural Elder Person of the Year Awards and some committee members are currently developing sponsorship options. There will be four awards: the overall Older Person of the Year award, Best Female award, Best Male award and Best Older Person in Business award. These will be presented at our International Day of the Older Person celebrations. It’s great to be part of a community that is coming together to develop an Age Friendly City in Palmerston North.

Zumba Gold has started here in the Manawatu: I am very excited to have introduced this new project this year 2016 here in the Manawatu. It runs every Thursday morning at 10.30am at dance Studio 186 Featherston Street. All attendees have been asked to participate in a small test before they start and again in three months’ time to measure there fitness levels. The classes are going well and the feedback so far is very positive. I can see the numbers growing each week and think in time maybe we can offer two weekly class options.

Ageing Well Expo 2016 is on again this year in

conjunction with Julia Wallace Residential Facility on 14th and 15th of September 2016. I am an active part of the working committee, which meets monthly to plan the event.

Accredited Visiting Service Update: Can you Help us to Help othersHelp us to help lower loneliness amongst elderly population in the Community. Elderly people can become socially isolated as their social contacts become smaller. Social isolation and loneliness is a big health risk for this sector of our society and Age Concern needs more volunteers. Please give some thought about becoming a Volunteer visitor.

Its only one hour each week and you can make such a difference in someone’s life. You will be doing valuable work. If you would like to be part of the solution please contact: Age Concern on (06) 355 2832

As a registered podiatrist, I am required by law to maintain my medical podiatry knowledge (through logged courses and meetings) including level 4 resuscitation and CPR. I am also required by law to ensure safe clinical instrument and room sterilisation procedures to protect my patients. ‘Nothing quite compares’ to Enliven’s day programmeEnliven’s unique Kapiti Day Programme is proving to be an invaluable retreat for coast elders and their carers. The programme has been developed by Enliven’s experienced diversional therapists for elders who experience dementia, mobility issues and/or chronic health problems.

The aim is to alleviate loneliness, helplessness and boredom, and to maximise independence for attendees, while also giving their family the chance to take a break. Manager Dorothy Todd says the fact that diversional therapists craft individual support plans for each attendee makes Enliven’s day programme unique. “Attendees take part in a range of group and one-to-one activities that stimulate the mind and keep the body active, the activities are tailored

to the individual’s needs, abilities and interests,” says Dorothy.“They make a lot of friends here. For most it’s about having company.”Enliven day programme attendee Tony Burgess says the programme is something he looks forward to each week. “I’ve got nothing but good things to say about this place. The staff are amazing and the people are amazing. It’s just a wonderful place,” says Tony. “There are plenty of options for things to do – there’s something for everyone. There’s no other place like this”.Dorothy says it’s not just the attendees that benefit from the day programme - it’s also an important programme for carers.“Being a carer is a full time job and it’s important that they have time for themselves. Many family members have said they don’t know how they’d cope if it wasn’t for this programme.”Enliven’s Kapiti Day Programme, located at Kapiti Cottage, 14 Tongariro Street in Paraparaumu, runs every Monday to Friday from 10am to 3pm. Memory WalkAlzheimers Manawatu is encouraging the Horowhenua communities (the young and the elderly) to join us in a free local event happening on Friday 16th September in Levin for a good cause. A splash of purple is expected in the Levin Adventure Park on Friday 16th September as supporters keen to raise awareness of Alzheimers and dementia, including Brendan Duffy (Mayor) are encouraged to gather for the Alzheimers Society ‘Memory Walk’. We plan to meet at 10am in the Adventure Park, the crowd bearing banners and balloons will head off on a short walk to Te Takere, Bath Street to take part in some entertainment and refreshments.

More than 20 Memory Walks organised by Alzheimers New Zealand and regional Alzheimers organisations, are being held in cities and towns throughout New Zealand in September and thousands are expected to take part.

Alzheimers New Zealand Executive Director Catherine Hall said dementia was the "major public health issue of the time. These Memory Walks allow us to publicly support people with dementia and their families, friends and carers. They're also a time for us to remember the people we know or have known with dementia," Hall also said an estimated 60,000 people were living with dementia in New Zealand and this was expected to increase to 154,000 by 2050 due to the ageing population.

Research confirmed two-thirds of New Zealanders know or have known someone with dementia. For 64 per cent of this group, it's a family member and for 33 per cent they were directly involved in their

care and support, she said. "Raising awareness through these walks is an important step - we need to do all we can to help people with dementia to live well. Dementia did not get talked about enough - it flew under the radar - it's a risk we all face and discussions and working to deal with dementia needed to be out in the open."

People at the event will be encouraged to ‘capture a memory’ by writing down a memory they would like ‘captured’. Local organiser Kate Malone said the events like the memory walk helped to take away the stigma associated with it - it’s about getting into the public, coming together as a community and bringing things out of the shadows and into the light”.

If you are keen to get involved, please contact the Alzheimers Society on Freephone 0800 004 001 or (06) 357 9539 to register or email:[email protected]
