PrEsidEnt’s mEssAgEsince you could actually see the design differences in the architecture from one side to the other.

I also watch the show “Extreme Homes” on HGTV. The show showcases the creative side of people who take the most bazaar buildings and create homes out of them; like lighthouses and windmills, and churches. Some of those creations are really cool, others, I’m still unsure about their design.

Ok, you are probably wondering, “Why is she talking about TV shows?” Well, I have found that watching the shows sparks my interest and reminds me that anything can happen if one is creative and takes a chance. There is an opportunity to create great design by taking risks, as some of the great architects have achieved from long ago. Has there ever been a moment where you have passed by an old building and thought “Gee, I wonder what kind of living space I can create from that?”

As many of you know I am not an architect; I just work with them. Take a moment and step back to look at the buildings around you and dream, if you will, of ideas and new creations. This is a great opportunity to regain some of those creative juices that may be lost in day to day shuffle of work. Summer is a great time for creative ideas and relaxing.

I look forward to seeing you at the future meetings.

Cheers, Julie Barrett, CSI, CDT

Hello Everyone,

The Santa Clara Valley Chapter is a great Chapter, and it is people like you who make it great. Recently, I took some time to remember all the things that happened in the past year. It is hard to believe that a year has passed by so fast and here we are again at the start of another CSI year.

By the time you read this, the Board will have had their strategic planning meeting. Be on the lookout for new ideas and ways that you can get involved. Over the next several months, there will be updates from that meeting. I know that I have said this a few times before – great opportunities come from getting involved.

On a different note, some of you who know me may, or may not, know that I love history. With that passion comes the fascination of great architectural designs. The old, the news, the blending of old and new - all are interesting to me. A while ago, I watched a show on KQED public television about Henry the Eighth’s palace. I didn’t realize that the palace is actually two palaces joined together, the second palace built decades after the first palace. I find this interesting,

By BriAn r. cournoyEr, lEEd AP

The Institute Board Meetings concluded with the Board dealing with many issues. The 2014 Board members received an orientation on the matters.

Once again this year, the Region Presidents were invited to the orientation weekend for an opportunity to experience what the Institute staff and Board are planning in upcoming year.

I offer the following observations:

Membership:

Institute membership was down slightly this year. The good news is that the retention hit and maintained over 80% for the better part of the year. This is the indication that membership retention efforts were better this year. However, recruitment dipped slightly which explains the decrease in overall membership.

The greater issue with recruitment is the lack of 30 and 40 year olds into CSI. CSI has become an aged organization. We are getting grayer and the numbers of Generation X and Y aged members is not increasing at a rate that would replace the retiring Baby Boomers.

Members Services:

The work of the Institute Education Committee and staff has enabled the Institute to offer more webinars this year. Some of these webinars will provide AIA/CES learning units.

The CCPR Certification is now ready to roll out. The study guide has been completed so those of you that have been waiting for this certification can look to this study program.

We have new data software which was long overdue and will enable staff to better serve the membership. The Institute has moved some of our data to the cloud which will save operating dollars in the future.

Brand Revitalization:

Brand revitalization implementation will be completed this year.

What is on the horizon?

CSI is looking towards the future and embracing our Emerging Professionals. There has been a lot of discussion about the intentional transfer of knowledge between the Baby Boomers and Gen X and Gen Y. There is a commitment by the Board to direct energy to finding a means to transfer knowledge between the aging and the younger generation.

The Institute Board accepted a recommendation from the BIM Task Team to develop an OMNI Class education program with the intention of promoting the intended use of OmniClass.

CSI is facing the greatest shift of population in this organization as the Baby Boomer Generation begins to retire. Along those same lines, the Institute is giving thought to the value

of CSI to our members. The role of the certified professionals is changing as the industry changes. New products and methods of construction are moving into the building industry. The green movement is changing how define buildings and building products. As such our certified members need to be relied on as trusted advisors. These are members that dedicate themselves to being leaders in our fields.

The Academic Programs Committee has been moved to the auspicious of the CSI Foundation. This will enable the APC to function more freely and get funding through the Foundation. It is thought that this will allow the APC to received funding from any number of outside sources. To insure that the APC gets continued focus under the Foundation, the Board has appointed two people to the Foundation to work with the funding sources that are typically associated with academic programs. Duane Johnson and Kathy Proctor were appointed to the Foundation Board.

Region Funding

The issue of Region Funding was discussed extensively last weekend in Atlanta. In 2009, the Institute Board

restructured the way Regions were funded to insure an uninterrupted funding. The Region Allocation Program (RAP) was installed. Institute dues were raised and 7% of the Institute dues were earmarked for Regions.

Prior to that time, Regions received funding from Chapters through assessments and this was found to be a less reliable means of sustaining a Region.

The discussion in Atlanta was over reducing the amount of Region funding from 7% to 4% of Institute dues. After discussion, the recommendation was defeated.

Hanley Wood

Recently, Hanley Wood the owner operator of CONSTRUCT has bought the USGBC show Greenbuild. There has been discussion that because Hanley Wood owns the AIA Show Building Leaders, that one big show for all three organizations might be a possibility. Hanley Wood has spoken with CSI and has assured CSI that no such thought exists at this point.

August 2013

I’ll admit it; I do not have the time or inclination to sit down and read all the magazines that come to my house from cover to cover. In despair, the neglected publications often huddle together on my desk seeking solace and from each other while awaiting their doomed day of recycling. During the long July 4th weekend, I was able to spend some quality time with my family and with the current issue of The Construction Specifier. Nestled in the first few pages is an insightful article, “Step Up Your Game with CSI,” from our incoming Institute President, Casey Robb, FCSI, CCPR, LEED AP. You should read it. Really, go ahead; I’ll wait.

This article made me leave the comfortable confines of my couch to dig out a highlighter from the uncharted depths of the kitchen junk drawer, which is a very perilous task. There were two sections that really resonated with me:

“This is CSI: We provide real solutions to complex project challenges through a shared belief in the power of collaboration, innovation, and the potential for knowledge exchange with the entire construction team.”

Other than inspiring me to channel my inner James Earl Jones voice (‘This is CNN’), this statement has got to be one of the best elevator pitches I’ve heard for CSI. This phrase should be printed on cards and given out to our members. It highlights the goals, mission, and drive of CSI in one simple, yet compelling statement.

The second section that really stood out was:

“Whether you’re a member or a potential one, step up your game with CSI, and help us move the industry forward.”

It takes Mahatma Gandhi’s famous quote of ‘You must be the change you wish to see in the world,’ and applies it to the construction industry. CSI is working to improve the AEC world, come be a part of that. Help to shape the future of our industry – locally, nationally, and worldwide.

If you haven’t managed to find your copy, you can find The Construction Specifier online: http://www.kenilworth.com/publications/cs/de/201307/index.html

You really should read the article for perspective on what CSI is and can become with your help.
