The word ‘holy’ can conjure up the image of someone who is always praying and, perhaps, cut off from everyday realities. Sunday’s readings however, remind us that holiness is not measured by the calluses on our knees but by the love for others. Most essentially, holiness is God’s gift. We are a holy people because God loves us and dwells among us making us the temple of God. Kia Ora, Kia Orana, Talofa, Malo e lelei, Namaste, Bula, Malo ni, Makadini, Annyoung, Witamy, Welcome,

‘BE HOLY! The first reading from the book of Leviticus tells us to love one another and not exact vengeance, nor must you bear a grudge against the children of your people. You must love your neighbour as yourself.’ (pg 418 St Pauls Sunday Missal, Standard Edition)

This is a great message for all of us in these trying times. We sometimes forget that we are all made in the image of God and so everyone is very special and we should treat everyone with great respect as they are all made in the same image.

Opening Mass

A beautiful opening mass was held on Wednesday 5th February where we our we welcomed our new parents with school candles presented by members of our Board. Our Tuakana also welcomed our Teina’s by giving them a heart to show our love for each other.

Ash Wednesday Mass

Wednesday 26th February the school will be joining the Parish for the Ash Wednesday Mass at 9.00am. Everyone is invited to join the Parish and school for this mass.

An amazing benefactor

We again have been blessed with supporters for our school. Tony Murray, an ex-pupil of the school, has kindly gifted all of Room 9 with new uniforms. These were presented to all children in our Friday assembly.

And Monday morning, don’t Room 9 look fabulous!

Room 9 and Sustainability

This week Room 9 has been learning about what to do with rubbish and how to sort it.

Here are some comments from the children.

Sarhai said, “My Grandad has a compost. We put food scraps into it, even egg shells.”

Renouf said, “We put banana skins under our tree to make it grow.”

Miyoko said, “Compost helps the plants to grow.”

Chris said, “Worms can make food into compost.”

Sasha said, “We are growing strawberries around

the rocks. Compost could help them grow.”

Sarhai said, “I used old boxes to make a robot.”

Sarhai said, “We have to make sure there is no

plastic on the beach.”

Jacob said, “We put our recycling in the blue bin.”

Julie-May said, “The most important question is ‘How do we not pollute

the Earth?’”

I like the story about the bubbles.

I blew a bubble and it went into the garden.

Solid, liquid or gas?

Gas is steam, smoke and air. When you boil water sometimes you might see some smoke. Liquid is water. You can drink water. Cloud is a type of smoke. Solid is stuck together. It moves but you can’t see it. By Haset Room 6

There is types of gas.n Air is a type of gas. Steam too. Ice is solid. Solid is hard all the time. Liquid is water. By Tanya, Room 6

Swimming Reflections

The first swimming lesson I missed

as I forgot my togs. Learning how

to swim using my arms was a

challenge because I could not

swim as fast as I could. Now I will

continue to practice swimming

faster using my arms. Mqren Yr.5

When I went swimming I was

amazed to see the new Grey Lynn School. James and Darren helped me to swim and stay afloat. It was hard

to do a streamline stroke as my arms hurt. I am learning how to hold my breath underwater for several

seconds. Oscar Yr.5

My experience during swimming lessons was that it

was fun even though it was short at each session. I

love each session and what we have to do. It gets

cold when you are in the water, but it warms you up

soon. When you are in Room 5 it is hard doing the

lessons because we are learning about how to swim

correctly and be safe in the pool. It is a great

experience and I want to be a confident swimmer.

It’s not quite deep speaking that it’s at Grey Lynn pool and not Point Erin’s pool. A great experience and I

want to do it forever. Augustine Yr.5

Welcome Summit Point School

On Friday 14th we officially welcomed Summit Point School onto our premises. The school was greeted with a Powhiri and then, after a shared sausage sizzle organised by our some of our fabulous parents, the schools enjoyed an afternoon of sports organised by both school’s house captains.

Reflections Room 5

I felt so excited to be sharing a school with another school, but I also felt very scared because there were unfamiliar

faces. My favourite part of the day was the sausages sizzle because I got to eat and make new friends. When it was

time to play the games, I was very glad as I got to attend in all activities and teach my group different games. My

favourite game was bull rush because it was inside, and we got to play with the Summit Point School’s fast runners. I

got along pretty well with all the girls because we had a good time talking with each other. Marie.H Yr.6

The moment Summit Point School walked through our school gates I was stoked to meet new people. Since our

school is tiny, I was excited to welcome Summit Point School into our school. Presenting our item with Summit Point

School was nerve wrecking but at the same time I was proud to represent my school. Surrounded with many children

Page 5: Serving with Faith and Love · as I forgot my togs. Learning how to swim using my arms was a challenge because I could not swim as fast as I could. Now I will continue to practice

I felt that my head was ready to explode. Once our activities were completed I was puffed out. When they left I felt

sad but happy that I met new people. Aliyah.M Yr.6

The day Summit Point School came, I was so excited and amazed. I got to meet a lot of new people which was fun.

My favourite part of the day was when we all sat down and ate our lunch because it was my chance to be confident

and introduce myself to new people. It was so fun when we played sports because everyone had their own talents to

show to us. When we sang our school song, I was quite nervous about what they would think but at the same time I

was proud of my school. Maree.V Yr.8

With great excitement we welcomed Summit Point School on to the grounds of St Joseph’s Grey Lynn. I enjoyed

spending time with them, whether it was sitting down, or running around. While engaging in the activities, we all

bonded really well. There was laughter, smiling, and making plenty of jokes. There were no problems only joy and

happiness. It came to my attention that we may be two different schools, but in my heart and eyes, we are only one.

Julizah Yr.8
