October’s Volunteers of the Month
Kari Hull is a wonderful first year mom who has gone
above and beyond with helping her teacher as well as
other Kindergarten classes. She is a room mom, book
mom, and a faithful classroom helper! We look forward to
many years of Kari helping out at SES! Her book choice
was From Head to Toe by Eric Carle.
Shannon Grey has been a consistent SES volunteer for
years. She has helped with Cougar Trail, Walk-A-Thon,
Teacher Appreciation, Field Day and Family Fun Nights.
She has also been a constant classroom helper for her
teachers over the years! We know we can always call
Shannon and she will pitch in if she is able! Her book
choice was The Very Quiet Cricket by Eric Carle.
Carlos Chandler has been a frequent face around SES
the month of October from helping Mr. McEldowney
with the fitness testing, to helping with the Fifth Grade
Potluck and field trip. He has also been a Watchdog this
month! His book choice was Slowly, Slowly, Slowly Sloth
by Eric Carle.

Message from the Principal An opportunity to give…
It’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving is just around the corner! November and December provide
excellent opportunities for students to think about the character trait of “caring” (Character
Counts). Our ASB will be organizing a food drive as part of Mount Si High School’s “Foodball”.
They will also be responsible to bring seasonal door decorations to the North Bend Transition
Centers to bring the holiday spirit to their residents. After the Thanksgiving holiday, students
will have the chance to bring a new toy for Mount Si Key Club’s annual Toy Drive.
Turkey Trot
Saturdays’ Turkey Trot was an incredible success. Many SES families showed up to run or walk
the 1K or 5K race with all proceeds going to the PTSAs of the participating schools. It was a joy
to see our families rally for a morning of “fun and fitness!” Several students had been
participating in Mr. McEldowney’s running club in preparation for the big event. The money earned
will support fitness events and the fifth grade outdoor education experience.
Early-Release Fridays & other release days
During the last few early-release Fridays, staff members have been reviewing data from reading
assessments, reviewing research pertaining to math instruction, and planning intervention and
enrichment strategies for reading and math. Also, you may have noticed that your child may
recently have had a substitute teacher in his/her classroom. Teachers have also been released in
grade-level teams to work within their Professional Learning Communities creating assessments
for our reading comprehension toolkits, reviewing math and reading power standards, and
receiving writing scoring training.
Conferences
Parent/Teacher Conferences begin this Friday. Your involvement is critical to your child’s success
and we look forward to seeing you there!
Thank you for all that you do for our school! For more information on any of the above topics,
please feel free to call me at 831-8050.
Your Principal,
Cori Pflug

Be a Reading Buddy!
What is The Reading Buddy Program?
Reading Buddies is a one-to-one reading program using volunteers as mentors and tutors in grades K-5 through out the Snoqualmie Valley School District. The goal of The Reading Buddy program is to assist students who need additional help to become successful readers and confident students.
Who can be a Reading Buddy Mentor? Anyone who desires to help a young student succeed in reading and have a meaning-ful experience with language. Parents, grandparents, guardians, retirees and senior citizens, employees, employers, college students and people who just enjoy students are encouraged to join!
What is the Mentor role? To work with the same student each week, helping to improve specific reading skills. Providing encouragement, support and just being a friend.
How much time does it take?
Each session with students is 30 minutes per week. The program operates from No-vember to May.
Who is in The Reading Buddy program?
Students that have been selected by classroom teachers from grades K-5.
How will I know what to do? All Reading Buddy volunteers receive support and assistance throughout the year by Katie Morris, the SVSD Literacy for Life Lead Teacher. Members also benefit from “Coffee House Chats” each trimester where they can share ideas, learn new strate-gies, and gain experience on literacy topics presented by guest teachers.
This is a program that has the potential to support many chil-dren at SES. Unfortunately we have only a small handful of volunteers at this time. Please consider adding 30 minutes of time to your already scheduled classroom volunteer time to make this important connection with a child. How can I become a Reading Buddy Mentor at SES?
