SESSION 3A Teen Leader'sPoise and Grace

Instructor After the Introduction and Background Reading discussion, review the session’skey areas of focus: Explore the three components of image Learn to carry yourself with poise and grace Learn grooming tips Learn about body types

Ask TL's to turn to Session 3 in theirTLC Student Manual and summarizethe introduction.

A perception is formed about you by others based on the way youdress, how your clothes are cared for and how you are groomed.

These things together have very little to do with physical beauty andeverything to do with your confidence, purpose, and character.

The old adage, you can’t tell a book by its cover goes out of thewindow in terms of living in the world around us. All too often, people judge others based on what they see on the outside.

This session is designed to teach you to develop the image of a “lady,”and teach you wardrobe selection, poise and grace, and groomingtechniques that will help you further refine your image as a leader.

Did You Know?Visual Impression

The initial impression you make on peoplecomes from:55% Visual (how you look)38% Vocal (the tone of your voice)7% Verbal (what you say)

Instructor Explain to TL's their image consists of three components: appearance, grooming, and poise and grace. Explain the first section will deal withappearance.

I. My Appearance Speaks for Me…

Instructor After defining image, turn to discussionon components of Visual Impression

Explain how they look makes a Visual Impression and others form an opinion

about their career, social level and professionalism based on what they see.

4 Components of Visual Impression- Your Credibility: Do your clothes match with who you say you are?- Your Likeability: Does your appearance send a message of openness?- Your Personal Attractiveness: Attention to details makes you look polished.- Your Confidence: Let’s the world know you are sure of your abilities.

Instructor After discussion on Visual Impression, turn discussion to appearance. Explainpeople often select their wardrobe based on style and taste. Display your fashionnote book or pictures and ask TL's their opinions about the pictures.

Your style communicates who you are as a person. If you dress in suits all of the time, one canassume you are more conservative, on the other hand, if you wear mini skirts everyday, one can

guess you are more liberal. Your taste level is determined by what you have been exposed to,your understanding of fabrics, color, fit and style of clothing.

Some people are born with a natural sense of style, while others may struggle to put an outfit together for the day.Understanding what colors and cuts of clothing look best on youbegins with understanding how colors impact your look and howfabric contributes to fit.

Pick the right fit…Bright colors recede therefore, when youwear bright colors, or textures it makesyou look larger. If you have big busts, stayaway from bright colors on top unless coveredwith a darker colored vest or jacket.

Horizontal lines make you look wider while vertical lines make youlook taller and slimmer.

Instructor As you work through different points, demonstrate by holding up fabrics andcolors as examples for TL's. After discussion, briefly discuss fabrics.

Matt Fabrics - make you look thinner and shiny fabrics reflect the light making you appear larger.Natural Fabrics - have the highest quality e.g. wool and cotton. One hundred percent superfinewool suits, look great, feel great and last the longest.Blends - look to fabrics with at least 85% natural fiber e.g. wool and only 15% man-made fiber foreasy laundering and a great compromise between image and manageability.

After fabric discussion, turn to discussion to body types. Review traditional bodytypes.

After discussion on body types, move to Poise and Grace. Explainproper standing, sitting and walking all begin with proper posture.

Review proper posture. Briefly review each point important to havinggood posture.

II. Poise and Grace

Instructor

How you sit, walk and stand all have to do with your poise andgrace. As a leader, people pay close attention to how you carryyourself.

Standing Properly/ HeadDon’t sag your head to the side or forward. It makes your shouldersslump and curves your back. Pulling your head up helps you breathebetter, straightens your back, and pulls your stomach in for a slimmerlook.

Instructor Instruct TL's to pull their heads up from the back firstnot the chin. Instruct TL's to lift their heads up and droptheir shoulders until they feel a slight tug. Instruct themto keep as much space as possible between theirshoulders and head.

Explain this elongates their neck and helps them appearmore refined.

Walk around and observe them standing properly.Correct anyone standing wrong and move on toshoulder placement.

Proper Shoulder PlacementBad posture becomes worse when you slump your shouldersforward. It is equally bad to thrust your shouldersbackwards. Slumping forward or backward misaligns yourentire body.

Note: Don’t hold your shoulders high, because it makesyou walk like a linebacker.

Instructor Remind TL's about their shoulders and the placement of their feet. After TL's practice standing, ask them to practice walking. Depending on the size ofthe class, you can invite TL's to demonstrate how they currently walk. After theydemonstrate, discuss the proper way to walk.

Poise and Grace

Arms Your arms should fall naturally to the side. Don’t stiffen your arms orhold your hand clinched closed. Bend your elbows slightly and rest your thumbsat your side seams.

Tummy Tuck in your tummy. No matter what your size, good posture willlengthen out your midsection so you will appear smaller. Tighten your stomachmuscles and tuck in your bottom. It will help you not twist and wiggle whilewalking.

Feet If you close your legs and slightly bend your knees, you can pointyour feet forward and stand perfectly. Never put the majority of your weight onone leg or foot, learn to distribute your weight evenly. Place one foot slightly infront of the other to stand more elegantly.

Instructor Allow TL's to practice walking briefly. After the walking discussion ends, go overthe proper way to sit. Explain many people don’t sit properly because we live in aless formal society. Though they don’t have to sit like Queen Elizabeth, theyshould sit like a "lady."

Sitting ProperlyRemember… Back up to the chair until you feel the edge

of the chair on the back of both ofyour legs.

Place one leg further back to get your balance.Begin lowering yourself while placing your handson the seat of the chair. Keep your hips tuckedbeneath you as you sit.

Sit on the edge of the chair; then slidegracefully back into place and cross legs at thebottom or cross to the side as demonstrated inphoto.

While SeatedInstructor Instruct TL's to remember to sit tall with their knees and

ankles together, one foot slightly ahead of the other, hands restingslighting in their laps, keeping their palms upward. When crossing your legs, crossthem at the bottom.

Press the hanging foot close to the ankle of the other foot. Point toes downward and both kneestogether, cross ankles and draw legs over to one side. Keep legs in front of the chair and never drawthem under your seat as to hide them.

Instructor After Poise and Grace discussion, move to the discussion on grooming.

Ask TL's to describe their morning routine. After reviewing their responses, moveto the personal grooming presentation and work through the grooming products.

Display the personal grooming items you have for demonstration. Giving themgrooming gift bags is a nice touch if available.

Go through the personal grooming items and explain TL's need to groomthemselves daily.

III. Personal Grooming

Scent is powerful. Smelling clean and fresh is imperative for TL's.Bathing and showering daily refreshes you and keeps you clean andbacteria free.

Explain to TL's there are two basic forms of soap, and they are asfollows:

TEEN LEADERSHIP COURSE 45

TLC Instructor’s Manual Session 3: A Teen Leader's Poise and Grace3

Page 14: SESSION 3 · Matt Fabrics - make you look thinner and shiny fabrics reflect the light making you appear larger. Natural Fabrics - have the highest quality e.g. wool and cotton. One

Deodorant Soaps – Good for those who play sports or sweat a lot. The only drawback is this type of soap is extremely drying to the skin. Add extra moisture withessential oils, body butters and lotion.

Moisturizing Soap – Comes in both liquids and solids and are very good formoisturizing the skin and for sensitive skin.

FragranceAfter bathing, spray your body with a soft scent. If you do it while your body is still wet, thescent will penetrate your skin and last longer. Moisturize your skin daily. Upkeep of your hairand nails completes the grooming details.

Instructor Allow TL's to test different scents and oils to see which fragrances they like most. After moisturizing instructions, close the discussion with oral hygiene. Explain theyshould take care of their breath daily by brushing their teeth, flossing andusing mouth wash.

There is nothing worse than talking to someone with bad breath. At school or work, carry breathmints for after breakfast and lunch. You should brush your teeth at least twice a day, whichincludes brushing them in the morning when you wake up and at night before you go to bed.

TL's should have pleasant breath. TL's should brush their teeth twice daily. TL's should floss their teeth. TL's should keep mints in their purse. Make sure you brush your tongue when

brushing your teeth.

Some bad breath is caused by a medical problem. Your dentist will be able to examine you andhelp determine the best course of action if the proceeding steps don’t eliminate your bad breath.

Instructor Close the class by reminding TL's to take the week to clean out theircloset and make sure their wardrobe fits properly and no clothescontains holes or stains. Close the meeting. Distribute the evaluationform for the workshop and remind TL's about next week's backgroundreading.
