VIRTUAL REALITY AT THE ARMORY

04

Virtual reality is a powerful tool for creativity. You can rough out ideas quickly while fully immersed in a your own virtual studio. You can explore ideas and save them and print in 3D those you like.

Christine Stiely is a digital art professional and has been a pioneering art and technology teacher at the Armory. “One main advantage of this technology is ideation. You can work out your ideas, no muss, no fuss. Once you have a design you like you can print it in 3D.” She added “There are patterns that can be created in 3D that would be impossible for human hands. And it is also great for creating replicas of your original ideas.”

So what is it like to experience virtual reality? Red light glows from the keyboard of the powerful gaming computer in the tech lab that runs the Oculus Medium software. When you put on the headset, or Oculus Rift, your aware-ness plunges into another world. First you get your bearings and learn to use the tools guided by a friendly, animated robot. Once you have command of the controls, you can use the tools to quickly get your ideas in 3 dimen-sions. You will hold two hand held remotes.

The remote for your dominant hand will hold the tool that presses, pinches, paints the creation. Your non-dominate hand will hold the tool bars and palettes. You can rough out you piece in blocks, spears, or other pre-formed shapes. As your project takes the proportions you want you can increase the resolution to add more detail and nuance to your project. Your work floats like an astro-naut in space. Your tools can rapidly add, subtract, cut, pinch, paint, and more. Spin the work and look at every angle. Put it away and come back with no worries about drying.

Executive Director Tom Pearson is excited to offer 3D printing and creation of art in virtual reality to youth. “It is where things are going and the Armory is committed to preparing young people for the future.”

According to Director of Ceramics and Sculpture Mark Walnock, “Anyone who is looking for a job in ceramics, at an art center or university, is required to be knowledgeable about technology and clay.”

Classes with Christine Stiely in 3D printing and virtual reality are held in the new tech lab is in the Montgomery building. Opportunities to learn technological tools for jewelry are offered in 3D printing in jewelry with Lisa Johnson.

Art instructors face an immense challenge to prepare their students for the future with rigorous and relevant education in art. Led by Armory faculty, the workshops will refresh art instructor’s skills in a variety of critical analysis, art mediums, and techniques, so that teachers are able to make valuable connections for students’ learning in relation to what they are teaching.

These new professional development workshops at the Armory are a unique opportunity for art instructors that teach in Palm Beach County to increase their experi-ences and expertise, develop STEAM lessons while receiving a certificate of participation and form 2401 for submission for School District requirements for recertification

WORKSHOP #1 CREATING A RUBRIC FOR STUDENT ART BOBBIE BRUBAKER, Department Director Painting Drawing, & 2D Media* National awards bring recognition to students, their schools, and their teachers. Scholarships and admit-tance to major art programs and colleges are given to students with formidable portfolios. Corporations hire creative people who can demonstrate their creativity in art and science. Creativity is developed as teachers guide students through visual problems. With practice students become more confident and find their personal voices. Help your students to develop their creativity and practice as they develop strong portfolios. As in science, with the ability to think abstractly and under-stand, there will be hurdles to overcome as a natural part of planning, designing, producing, and teaching students to use rubrics to test the quality of their work. Teach students to recognize and present their compelling pieces with strong artist statements for work submitted auditions, art competitions, scholarship applications, International Baccalaureate presentations, Advance Placement Studio Art Portfolios, and AICE exams. Working from Scholastic Arts and AP Studio Art Exam examples, teachers will work together to develop a rubric to guide students in the selection of their stron-gest work for submissions to various exhibitions and competitions. Guide students to write effective artist statements, which help to convey their intent for the body of work. Certificate of participation will be given at the end of the workshop. Form 2401 will be available.

Friday, 8:30 am – 11:00 am 19W2-WBB.5a SESSION 4: March 25th Forum

Teachers will learn the industry standard tool for creating rich imagery for a variety of applica-tions including video, print, and the web, which they can use in their digital lab with their students. Topics to be included are: understanding the foundations of digital imaging, get comfortable with the interface and workspace, learn how to use the selection tools, and use layers to manage your documents. Certificate of participation will be given at the end of the workshop. Form 2401 will be available.

S C H O O L P O L I C I E SThe Armory Art Center is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. The following policies and measures are in place so we can continue to

pursue our mission to inspire the creation and experience of art.

REFUNDSA non-refundable registration fee equal to 10% of the course tuition is included in each course registration, excluding one day workshops and Pop-Up Workshops. Students who withdraw from a course at least five (5) working days prior to the start of that course are eligible to receive a full tuition refund minus the registration fee. Students who withdraw from their course less than five (5) working days before the start of that course or once the course has started are not eligible for a refund. No refunds will be issued due to a student’s failure to attend class.

LIABILITYThe Armory will not assume liability for injuries that occur within the subject area where the student is enrolled. Upon registration for any course, the student assumes all reasonable liability from injuries related to the scope of the coursework being taught and releases the Armory Art Center from any liability claims related to any injuries and/or accidents that may occur. The student can be assured that every reasonable safety precaution is taken by the center. The Armory Art Center is not responsible for any artwork or personal items lost or stolen in the classrooms or lockers.

MEMBERSHIPMembers help to support the Armory. Only about half of the cost to run the art school comes from tuition and lab fees with the remainder of our budget needs coming in from contributions, grants, and fundraising events. We hope you will support the Armory by becoming a member and will enjoy the many benefits. See the member benefit program on www.armoryart.org to see which level is best for you and your family.

CANCELED OR MISSED COURSESThere are no make-up classes due to student illness, travel, or other reasons that are not the responsibility of the Armory Art Center. Students enrolled in courses which are canceled by the Armory due to lack of enrollment or instructor illness will receive a full refund. Every effort will be made to notify students at least 24 hours before the first class. The Armory reserves the right to substitute instructors for any of its classes at any time.

TRANSFERS In order to maintain the quality of instruction the transfer and proration policies have been changed. Students wishing to transfer from

one course to another in the same session may do so prior to the second meeting of the course and only if space is available in class. If you do not attend a class, the Armory must still pay the teacher; therefore, classes paid for but not attended are not eligible for transfer or refund.

DISCOUNTSPalm Beach County teachers receive a 20% discount on classes with proof of school ID. Youth (ages 14 - 18) receive a 20% discount on tuition for adult classes. We offer a 20% discount off any adult class college students. Lab or material fees are excluded. Please present valid student ID.

MULTIPLE COURSE DISCOUNT:A multiple course discount cannot be combined with any other discount. This discount only applies to 4 and 8 week classes. This discount does not apply when classes are pro-rated.• Adult students will receive a 20% discount

on the tuition of additional courses (of equal of lesser value, exclusive of studio time, lab fees, model fees, or cost of materials purchased at the Armory) in the same session for the same student.

• Parents of Summer Art Experience students receive 10% off adult classes during Sessions 5 & 6 only.
