The Goat Island Bridge spans the Niagara River and has a 450' main span that consists of 3 built-up riveted girders varying in depth from 7' to 16'. The two end spans are 70' long with cast-in-place counterweights. The approach spans cross over a former section of the Robert Moses State Parkway. Major elements of the rehabilitation project included replacement of the main span bridge deck with a CIP exodermic deck, replacement of the two approach spans with a single span, cleaning and painting of the steel and replacement of all stone facing on the substructures. This presentation will detail the design and construction of the structure of the aforementioned components.
About the Presenters:
Wahid Albert is a graduate Civil Engineer from SUNY – Buffalo, class of 1984. He has been working for NYSDOT in Albany for more than 20 years including 7 years in the Design Division and the past 13 years in the Structures Division. He is currently the Supervisor of three bridge design squads in the Structures Division. His experience with the Department includes highway design, consultant management, structures design and load rating and overload permits. Christopher Beal has a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Buffalo, a BPS degree in Architecture from UB and an AAS degree in Civil Engineering from Hudson Valley Community College. Christopher has worked for approximately 12 years in construction as a superintendent of commercial building construction, surveyor, project engineer and project manager. Christopher was the project manager on the Goat Island project as well as numerous other bridge projects in the past 6 years for all phases of construction.
