Well what a nice surprise! The Forsyth Chamber of Commerce held their annual banquet on Saturday evening, January 21 at Fat Daddys. A part of the evening festivities was the awarding of the Citizen of the Year and Business of the Year Awards. The Rev. Dean Burton, past minister and organizing pastor of Forsyth Christian Church, got the Citizen of the Year award and we, Community Presbyteri- an Church, received the Business of the Year award. What an honor! Heres what is on the award. Forsyth Area Chamber of Commerce 2016 Business of the Year This award is presented to Community Presbyterian Church In recognition of your contribution to the Forsyth community It is signed by Gerry Grummons, President and Bill Bassett, Executive Director They thanked us for our participation in the community and the chamber. We host the Forsyth Chambers monthly luncheon meeting in our main fellowship hall. We help coordinate several joint ministries in the community; Mentor Program, Rela- tional Ministries, Taney County Ministries. We also support Christian Action Minis- tries and the Forsyth Boys and Girls Club. We can be proud of this award and give thanks that others are seeing how we strive to be Always Involvedin different parts of our community. One area I hope well build a stronger relationship with is the Forsyth Senior Center. We have sev- eral members that participate, yet this is an important part of our community and who we are. So, consider finding ways to support them in the weeks to come. Heres some things to be thinking about for this month. Sunday, February 12 is our annual meeting. This is a time to receive the reports for 2016 and begin looking at things to come in 2017. This is an important meeting of the congregation and will immediately follow worship. All members and friends of the congregation are en- couraged to attend. Looking further down the line Ash Wednesday will fall on March 1. On that day, Id like to begin a Lenten Study of the Gospel of John. To do this, Im suggesting the book Reading John for Dear Lifeby Jamie Clark Soles. Lent is a time for us to ex- amine our faith and I believe this study will get to some of the core aspects of faith and life. I hope youll join me in this study. Im hopeful that there is enough inter- est to have two small group studies of it. One during a weekday afternoon and the other in the evening. Both will be scheduled as interested. Let me know of your de- sire to participate in this study. Lastly, dont forget Valentines Day. A day to celebrate the love you share with oth- ers and a day to remember how God loves you! Well what a nice surprise! The Forsyth Chamber of Commerce held their annual banquet on Saturday evening, January 21 at Fat Daddy’s. A part of the evening festivities was the awarding of the Citizen of the Year and Business of the Year Awards. The Rev. Dean Burton, past minister and organizing pastor of Forsyth Christian Church, got the Citizen of the Year award and we, Community Presbyteri-an Church, received the Business of the Year award. What an honor!

Here’s what is on the award.

Forsyth Area Chamber of Commerce 2016 Business of the Year This award is presented to

Community Presbyterian Church In recognition of your contribution to the Forsyth community

It is signed by Gerry Grummons, President and Bill Bassett, Executive Director

They thanked us for our participation in the community and the chamber. We host the Forsyth Chamber’s monthly luncheon meeting in our main fellowship hall. We help coordinate several joint ministries in the community; Mentor Program, Rela-tional Ministries, Taney County Ministries. We also support Christian Action Minis-tries and the Forsyth Boys and Girls Club.

We can be proud of this award and give thanks that others are seeing how we strive to be “Always Involved” in different parts of our community. One area I hope we’ll build a stronger relationship with is the Forsyth Senior Center. We have sev-eral members that participate, yet this is an important part of our community and who we are. So, consider finding ways to support them in the weeks to come.

Here’s some things to be thinking about for this month. Sunday, February 12 is our annual meeting. This is a time to receive the reports for 2016 and begin looking at things to come in 2017. This is an important meeting of the congregation and will immediately follow worship. All members and friends of the congregation are en-couraged to attend.

Looking further down the line Ash Wednesday will fall on March 1. On that day, I’d like to begin a Lenten Study of the Gospel of John. To do this, I’m suggesting the book “Reading John for Dear Life” by Jamie Clark Soles. Lent is a time for us to ex-amine our faith and I believe this study will get to some of the core aspects of faith and life. I hope you’ll join me in this study. I’m hopeful that there is enough inter-est to have two small group studies of it. One during a weekday afternoon and the other in the evening. Both will be scheduled as interested. Let me know of your de-sire to participate in this study.

Lastly, don’t forget Valentine’s Day. A day to celebrate the love you share with oth-ers and a day to remember how God loves you! In Psalm 56:9b we hear; This I know, that God is for me.

Enjoy God’s love of you and his love for all. Happy Valentine’s to each and every one of you.

Session Digest-Stated Meeting, Thursday, January 26, 2017

Nine of the Twelve elders were present. Pastor Dennis lead the elders in a devotional focused upon the Great Ends of the Church.

the proclamation of the gospel for the salvation of humankind; the shelter, nurture, and spiritual fellowship of the children of God; the maintenance of divine worship; the preservation of the truth; the promotion of social righteousness; and the exhibition of the Kingdom of Heaven to the world.

Officers for 2017 were then elected by the elders; Anna Koelling was elected as Clerk of the Session, Linda Reynolds treasurer, Tex Ritterbush President of the corporation and Dr. Reed Click commis-sioner to presbytery meetings. (The commissioner has to be an elder but does not need to be an ac-tive elder on the session.) The elders give thanks to Gretchen Keith for serving as clerk during 2016.

Per her request, Georgia Roe was removed from the active roll of the church since she has moved to Texas.

The elders reviewed the church’s by-laws and recommended amending them to move installation of new elders from January 1 to September 1. This will help in training and the flow of church business each year. Elders may be recommending other revisions to the by-laws, all of which will be present-ed to the congregation when completed.

The elders approved the following committee structure for 2017. a. Evangelism/Mission – Ken Bavuso, Ed Legge b. Care of Members – Delpha Riley, Madelon Kinkade c. Worship & Christian Education – Mary Parr, Madelon Kinkade, Anna Koelling d. Parish Activities – Wayne Gailey, Vera Hardin, Steve Wood e. Budget & Finance – Linda Reynolds, Wayne Gailey. Auditors Delpha Riley and John Keith f. Building & Grounds – Tex Ritterbush, Buddy Roberts, Steve Woods

Short Term Committees g. Nominations – Buddy Roberts, Vera Hardin h. Personnel – Delpha Riley, Linda Reynolds i. Stewardship Campaign – undecided at this time

Pastor Dennis gave his report to the elders concerning his activities and responsibilities.

The financial reports for 2016 were received and approved for review.

Discussion and vote was held on the installation of a new sign in front of the church. Part of the dis-cussion focused around how when people drive up to the church, they think we are “Forsyth Union Church” as that is what is over our front doors. Others shared their concern that the new sign would take away from the beauty of the church. After good discussion the motion passed 5 in favor, 3 no. Work continues on getting estimates of fixing up the building next door so it can be rented and pro-vide more income for the church. It is estimated that the refurbishing of this building will cost around $15,000. The cost of refurbishing the building would be paid back to the church from the rental of the building.

Elders decided that we will hold a potluck meeting on February 12, following worship, and conduct the annual meeting of the congregation/corporation following the dinner. The 2016 Annual Reports are available at the church.

Assessment of how the meeting went. Elders gave thanks for lively and positive discussion. Ed Leg-ge requested that when a hand count is called for that it also be a voice vote, as it would help him as a visually impaired member.

Session adjourned at 8:05 pm after a closing prayer lead by Pastor Dennis. Next meeting of the session is Thursday, February 16 at 4:30 pm.

Did you know that scholarships are available in JCP? We have educational scholarships and camp scholarships available on a regular basis. The camp scholarships are awarded each year to children who plan to attend church camp. Covenant Point camp is run by Missouri Union Presbytery and you can find out about their programs at http://www.campcovenantpoint.org. Heartland Center in Heartland Presbytery also runs a camp and you can find out more about them at http://www.heartlandcamps.org/#heartland-camp. If a child is interested in attending a camp this summer, now is a good time to apply because some early bird discounts are avail-able. Also, there is the possibility that Heartland Center will be bringing their traveling day camp to one or more locations in JCP. We will try to let you know when and where that will be happening.

Our educational scholarship is available to members of JCP who need some assistance for con-tinuing education to assist the ministry of their local church and are available upon request. For example, if a person wanted to attend a conference on stewardship, they might apply for a scholarship to help defer some of the cost. The application for these scholarships can be found at http://www.jcpresbytery.com/uploads/8/9/4/3/8943859/education.scholarship.application.2016.pdf.

We are hoping that our scholarship program will be helpful to many as they seek to enrich their faith. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to email me at [email protected] or call me at (620) 674-1844.

2017 Per Capita Rate Per capita is an amount of money per

member that our congregation pays to

our larger Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

This annual amount is shared between our

local presbytery, regional synod and Gen-

eral Assembly. For 2017, our per capita

rate is $35.00 per member. Any contribu-

tions toward this amount would be appre-

ciated. Please note your contribution as

“Per Capita” to be sure it’s credited cor-

rectly.

We have received $105 toward Per Capita so far this year.

Thank you!

I would like to thank Pastor Dennis for all his time, presence, and prayers during the last two months of Ken's hospitalization and hospice care. And also a special thanks to the members who dropped off food. It's such a good feeling to know my church family is by my side in this journey. God bless you all.
