System integration for Smart Grids deployment

• Smart Grid implies a growing volume of information exchange

• Such information exchange needs interoperable systems

What does «interoperability» mean?

Interoperability is the ability of two or more systems, applications, components, or devices to exchange and subsequently use that information

in order to perform required functions

L. Martini, JRC Int. Symposium, Ispra, October 28TH, 2015

Electric Vehicles as new Smart Grids actors

IMMEDIATE NEED:

• Easy and ubiquitous access to charging

VERY NEXT-FUTURE NEED:

• Vehicles as active actors of the electric system:

• Smart Charging (Demand Response, Load Management)

• Vehicle-To-Grid, Vehicle-To-Home.

KEY ASPECTS:

- Systems Interaction - INTEROPERABILITY

- STANDARDS

EV standards, what’s missing?

GAP ANALYSIS (Green eMotion and COTEVOS EU Projects)

1. Analysis of the existing standards related to electro-mobility

2. Collection of open issues through different methods: • Surveys

• Workshops involving all different stakeholders

• Direct interviews

• Demos and Pilots (Demo regions), …

3. Comparison needs & existing and creation of a Gap Matrix

4. Development of a Roadmap for near-future EV standardization activities

L. Martini, JRC Int. Symposium, Ispra, October 28TH, 2015

Page 10: Session IV Interoperability Requirements and … Oct... JPs launched in 2010 Bioenergy ≈ 327* CCS ≈ 361* Geothermal ≈ 408* Material for Nuclear ≈ 198* PV ≈ 162* Smart Grids

GAP ANALYSIS – MAIN GENERAL RESULTS

• Some technical aspects, very relevant in the last years, are being solved (e.g. plugs/connectors)

• Communication interfaces are the main open point;

• …

• There is the need for Interoperability testing methods and procedures (conformance testing only probably is not sufficient);

• In many cases, the key aspect is not to create new standards, but rather to agree on how to choose and use the selected one(s)

Impulse statement for discussion:

Is there a need for a closer synergy between Regulation and Standardization activities?

STRONG NEED FOR JOINT ACTIVITIES ON THESE ASPECTS

Key Interoperability Activities

• Study of the main ICT reference architectures

• Identification and analysis of the main relevant ICT standards

• Assessment of IEC 61851, OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) and OpenAdr and testing their functionalities on specific tests cases (e.g. Demand Response)

JRC - RSE Collaboration Agreement and the importance of the

EU Interoperability Centre for Electric Vehicles and Smart Grids

• Interoperability (IOP) tests related to OCPP protocol for EVSE management also applying COTEVOS IOP test procedure

• IOP tests related to Distribution Automation

• Collaboration about the main Smart Grids ICT Standards:

• Common Information Model (Grid topology, DMS) • IEC 61850 (Power Utility Automation) • IEC 62746 (Demand Response) • Home automation (SEP 2) • …

1st V2G PlugTestTM in Ispra from 30th Nov. to 4th Dec. 2015

With the support of COTEVOS project, ETSI CTI is organizing the first Vehicle-to-Grid PlugtestTM in Ispra hosted by JRC.

The focus is:

• on assessing the interoperability of systems, apparatus for any of the interfaces that can be used to integrate EVs within electricity grid

• the testing campaign will be conducted based on the interoperability test plan developed by COTEVOS partners
