Setting out

Setting out prior to any construction is very important.

Always check your setting out before work starts. Mistakes are costly if made on site – usually involving taking brickwork down because the wall is not in the correct position or because it is cut out of square.

Step 1

Prior to any construction, the frontage and building lines must be established.

These lines and measurements can be located on the working drawings.

Step 2

From your frontage line, the building lines can be measured.

This will allow you to determine your first peg position.

Using the 3:4:5 ratio, the first right-angled corner can be achieved.

Ensure both diagonals are equal in length.

Step 3

When all the pegs have been fixed, the profiles can be put in place – remembering the distance required from the trench.

Fixing out ranging lines can now be undertaken.

Always re-check the structure for square using the ranging lines.

Step 4

After checking that you have set out for square, the ranging line positions can be transferred to the foundation concrete.

XXX marks can be made using a trowel into a thin bed of mortar.

Step 6Each quoin header has to be level with each other.

If the straight edge is long enough and using a spirit level, all four bricks can be levelled.

If the straight line is not long enough, an optical level can be used.

Step 7

When the quoin bricks are in place, the corners can be raked back – each course on all four corners level with each other.

Check for square and ranging at each course.

Steps 8 and 9To ensure that each course is level when running in between quoins, you can use corner blocks.

These can be moved up the wall as the work proceeds.

Step 10When filling between quoins, always check your ranging – not only horizontally but diagonally too.

The brickwork must be level at each course.

Step 11Between xxxx of brickwork, the loading out of resource must be undertaken.

The spot board (shown as ‘S’) should be 600mm from the building line with the bricks between 600–700mm.
