No college credit is offered. Classes do not require admission to the college, and do not involve exams. There are no transcripts or grades and classes are not transferable. Minimum enrollment is required for classes to start. Com-munity Education is a self-supporting entity of LPC and is not funded by taxpayer dollars. Community Education classes are offered in addition to the LPC instructional program. Community Education classes do not necessarily reflect the views or policies of Las Positas College. We are proud to partner with faculty and staff from the college to offer a great range of Summer camps for kids as young as 5 and adults, including seniors!

Camps for teens are designed to encourage career exploration. Are you interested in being an EMT? What about Sports Medicine practitioner? Thinking about getting into coding and ethical hacking? Maybe you would consider a career in biotechnology? Digital Arts? We have a career exploration camp for you!

And due to popular demand, FENCING CAMP with Sophie Rheinheimer is back! Sophie is taking on new students and we are excited to bring this opportunity to you...she’s an extraordinary instructor, and she’s had multiple students competing at all levels of fencing, even nationally.

Andrew Lozano graduated from California State University, Sacramento in 2013 with a degree in Physics. He Joined Las Positas College in 2014 as a Laboratory Technician for the departments of, Physics, Engineering, and Geography. Over the years in the position as a technician he has actively been involved with the creation of the Makerspace within the department of engineering. This includes the introduction of 3D printing and Laser cutting and engraving. Andrew enjoys designing and building industrial products and accessories, and he can often be found playing guitar in his office or producing art in different media. Take his Laser Cutting workshops see pages 5 & 9.

BioTech Boot Camp (Advanced)Advanced Biotechnology–Food Science For students entering 10th or 11th grade in Fall 2019 with at least 1 year in a biotech lab program or any Biotech Boot-camp alumni. You must have prior experience using a micro pipette, doing PCR and loading and running gels. Do your favorite foods containing GMOs? Is your let-tuce contaminated with bacteria? Learn about geneti-cally modified organisms, while conducting PCR and immunoassays used in actual food science labs. This advanced camp is designed for students who may have participated last year, or who participated in the first week of this year’s camp. Please bring a lunch. Leav-ing campus at lunch time is not encouraged. Amy Cho-vnick is an instructor of Biology at Las Positas College.

CyberPatriots Summer CampCyber camp is a 5-day technology event designed to excite students new to cybersecurity about STEM ca-reer opportunities, and teach them important cyber defense skills through hands-on instruction and activi-ties. Through the camp, students learn how to protect their personal devices and information from outside threats, as well as how to harden networks running Windows and Ubuntu operating systems. Daily ses-sions include instructor demonstrations, team-orient-ed research , hands-on lab activities, plus peer team building. Cyber camp culminates in an exciting final team competition that simulates real cybersecurity situations faced by industry professionals and mimics AFAs CyberPatriot National Youth Cyber Defense Com-petition. No experience necessary. Registration is open to incoming 9th to 12th graders (14 to 18 years of age) AND community college students. Beginning Fencing Camp for Kids (8 to 12)Engarde! Parry! Riposte! Course for beginners (AGES 8 to 12) and is an introduction to the wonderful world of fencing. Class emphasizes conditioning and footwork, along with correct blade action. Equipment rental for the session is $20.00, and equipment is rented the first day of class. Students must bring a pair of non-marking athletic shoes that are only worn inside the fencing room. No outdoor shoes are allowed. All fenc-ers should bring a water bottle. No other liquids are allowed. Limit 12 students. Sophie Rheinheimer has fenced competitively at both the national and inter-national levels. She won a bronze medal at the 1998 Nike World Master Games and was a member of the USA team competing at the 1999 and 2000 Veteran’s World Fencing Championships in Siofok and Godollo, Hungary. Sophie is also a founding faculty member at LPC, where she began teaching PE in 1975. She began teaching fencing classes at LPC in the early 1980s, and founded the Fencing Center in 2002.

Digital Media Summer CampIs Digital Media your career? During this camp, ex-plore several industry standard tools, including Ado-be illustrator, Photoshop, Spark, and Autodesk Maya. In 5 days you’ll work both individually and in teams to develop fictional promotional campaigns centered on a product idea that you create. At the end of the camp, each student will have a portfolio that includes their product concept in 3D, packaging and a website for their chosen product. Sports Medicine CampIf you are interested in athletic training, or any area of sport medicine, this is the camp for you. Sports Medi-cine and Athletic Training careers are one of the fast-est growing fields in the Allied Health Care profession. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, athletic training is projected to grow 23 percent from 2016 to 2026. Sports Medicine clinicians specialize in the pre-vention, recognition and treatment of activity related injuries and illnesses. Many work in educational set-tings, hospitals, private clinics, corporate settings, fit-ness centers and professional sports teams. At the Las Positas College Sports Medicine Camp, campers will have the opportunity to learn day to day procedures of a sports medicine professional. Preventive and re-habilitative methods used in common athletic injuries, such as taping and wrapping, therapeutic modalities and emergency care are just a few of the things this camp will focus on. The hands-on LPC Sports Medicine Camp is an all-inclusive program designed to prepare students for a future in sports medicine. Anela Le Cara is the Head Athletic Trainer at Las Positas College.

HEADER FALL 2017SUMMER CAMPS / COLLEGE PREPARATION

Video Production WorkshopThis production workshop combines Introduction to Shooting a Video, which includes camera work and lighting; Introduction to Video Editing, using Adobe Premier Pro; and the participation in a 2-day video pro-duction in collaboration with Las Positas Productions and Chabot TV. At the end of the course, we launch the videos online, cable tv, and social networks. You will receive credit as a Video Producer and you can use the video to apply for jobs and art schools. Class meets twice per week for two weeks. Come learn ba-sic camera work, lights, audio, and participate in a real production. Cameras and computers can be provided, but you are encouraged to bring and practice on your own equipment. Course taught by Las Positas TV, in collaboration with Chabot TV. Self Defense for WomenClass is designed to empower girls and women go-ing off to college in the Fall to prevent crime and victimization, break the myths surrounding vio-lence against women, and develop simple, easy-to-use self-defense techniques. This class is of-fered in conjunction with our community partner, Tri-Valley Haven. Most of the registration fee for this class is shared with them, in support of their mission: Tri-Valley Haven creates homes safe from abuse, contributes to a more peaceful society one person, one family, one community at a time. LPC Welding Camp gives high school students an opportunity to earn a college unit while igniting their inter-est in the field of welding. The two-week camp introduces the basics of shop safety, hand tools, and welding to high school students. With an emphasis on practical uses and applications, students earn one unit of weld-ing college credit towards their degree in a summer welding lab experience by manufacturing a smoker BBQ.

HOW TO REGISTERA. There are three ways to register:

2. By phone at 925.424.1467 with a credit card

3. By mail with a credit card or check payment and the registration form in this brochure

B. Register early to ensure your place in a class. Walk-ins are welcome unless otherwise noted; however, please note that if you plan to walk-in the day of class, please pay by check or cash only! Credit cards are not accepted at the classroom. Please call us before you come to the college to attend class to make sure the class is being taught and to receive the room number: 925-424-1467.

C. Registration confirmations are sent via email only. Please provide an email address when registering if you want a confirmation of enrollment.

D. Refund Policy: Refunds are not given for Community Education courses except when a class is cancelled. In the event of a class cancellation, full refunds will be given. Please see website for full refund policy.

E. Parking on campus is by permit only. Daily parking permits are available for $3 from machines in each parking lot.

F. When you register for a Community Education class you are agreeing to a Student Code of Conduct. Please see website FAQ for more information.
