PRELIMINARY ROUND

There will be a total of 25 questions in this round.

The top EIGHT teams on the basis of their scores in this round will make it to the final.

Starred questions (questions 1, 7, 15, 18, 20, 23 and 24, which have been duly marked) will be used to break ties, if any occur. If that fails, the sudden death method of eliminating teams which have got an answer wrong before other teams will be applied.

The prelims scores will be multiplied by 5 and carried over to the final round so as to ensure the fact that the team which answers the most questions over the quiz wins.

Any team found using unfair means will be summarily disqualified from the quiz.

The quizmaster is always right.

There are two main theories about the derivation of X.

(1) Parts of X were created by Lord Parasurama, who

reclaimed the land from the sea. Hence the name is

derived from chernna ("added") and alam ("land"),

which formed the basis for the Sanskrit for "the land

added on”.

(2) The Chera dynasty, which ruled most of X from the

1st to the 5th centuries AD, gave its name to the

region; Chera alam later became X. This is often

disputed in academic circles because the word

existed even before the rule of Cheras.
