Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH) is a rare life-threatening condition characterized by markedly elevated circulating levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and accelerated, premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. While historical estimates indicate that the prevalence of HoFH is of 1 in 1 million people worldwide, more recent data suggest that this is a conservative estimate due to the fact that this disease is severely underdiagnosed. Early diagnosis of HoFH and prompt initiation of diet and lipid-lowering therapy are critical (patients with this disease o en require aggressive therapy). However – given its signifi cant underdiagnosis – HoFH is commonly undertreated, despite available treatment options that help reduce LDL-C and decrease the risk of cardiovascular events. In this activity, leading experts will discuss approaches to eff ectively identify patients with HoFH and the safety/effi cacy profi les and appropriate utilization of currently available therapies, as well as emerging therapeutic approaches.

Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be be er able to:

    • Identify patients with HoFH to ensure appropriate treatment.

    • Apply knowledge of the safety, effi cacy, and recommended usage of available therapies to clinical decision making for the treatment of HoFH.

    • Assess the safety, effi cacy, and potential benefi ts and limitations of emerging agents to manage patients with HoFH.

At the conclusion of this activity, registered nurses and nurse practitioners should be able to provide appropriate counsel for patients and their families.

The intended audience for this activity is lipidologists, cardiologists, endocrinologists, pharmacists, advance practice registered nurses, registered nurses, and other health care professionals involved in the treatment of patients with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH).
