2 Flooring Association Northwest

As we head into the last quarter of 2016, we start thinking about our goals for 2017. The Flooring Association Northwest is dedicated to representing its members through industry involvement while providing quality education, in-formation and a platform to unite the flooring channel. We have 4 basic goals: serve as a conduit for member interaction; strengthen educational offerings around key issues; collaborate with related industry organizations to address industry issues and challenges, and expand our membership base.

The objective of FAN’s member interaction is to engage, enable and inspire members to connect, share in best practices, network and exchange informa-tion. This can be accomplished by members attending network opportunities FAN has to offer, dinner meetings, the Market Expo, golf tournament and socials. Member participation and interaction on social media will also help everyone stay up on trends, trainings and issues.

The Flooring Association Northwest would like to strengthen our educational offering by focusing on top issues and trends that impact our members. Mem-bership can help reach this goal by increasing awareness and participation in existing FAN educational opportunities (i.e. Training for a Lifetime and dinner meetings) and aid in establishing select new partnerships to deliver high-val-ue content. Our association’s strength is in our membership and our need to constantly stay educated on products and issues that affect our businesses.

Providing support and resources necessary in related industry organizations is the key to the survival of our industry. We have to rely on the power of numbers to make a difference. The Flooring Association Northwest has been a long time affiliate of the WFCA. Utilizing their resources gives our members access to industry trainings, trends and lobbying legislation.

Expanding our membership can be done by identifying and actively pursuing retailers, commercial flooring stores, installers, distributors, manufacturers, designers and affiliated members. As an association we have diversified our membership offerings to include businesses that can benefit all members. Offering programs such as group insurance rates, banking and financial plan-ning. Continuing on this path will keep us successful. FAN’s value is providing services to help its members businesses. Our website will get an upgrade in 2017 which will include a classified section, where members can post jobs, sell equipment and services to others in the industry. Be sure to follow the Flooring Association Northwest on Facebook and LinkedIn as well to stay up to date on educational, social and recreational activities we have to offer.

We are excited for the future and look forward to being your conduit to the industry.

Cave to Cooktops Locavore to Foodavore: A Cultural History of the KitchenPresented by Judith A. Neary, Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designer

Ever wonder why the sink is located under the window? Where (or what) was the first garbage disposal? What is Napoleon Bonaparte’s connection to the Mason jar? Why a stove is called a stove? Ten thousand years ago we were Locavores. Today, we have a new culture of “Food-ies” and seven in every ten households now have some sort of garden.

This one and a half hour presentation is a brief journey through our human history examining how patterns in our culture have affected how we function in our homes today and how we will use them in the future. Key historical events have brought about technological advancements that changed how we live. Now the Foodavore move-ment is changing how we shop, prepare, cook and store food ultimately changing the function of the kitchen. In this presentation we will look at some fun and interesting facts about the evolution of appliances and the shape of the kitchen, how we evolved from the original “open plan” to the open plan concept we embrace today as a popular solution to contemporary living.

Neary is a Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designer (CMKBD). She began her career in commercial and hos-pitality design and continued to develop her skills and style designing and building custom cabinetry, case goods and furniture. After twelve years of merchandising, design and training for a national retailer, she began working in the manufacturing segment of the industry. Her responsibilities included development and implementation of business processes, installation programs, showroom space planning and design. Designing Barrier-Free ShowersEasier now than ever with advent of the linear drain

8 Flooring Association Northwest

By Dale Kempster, CSC, CTC, TTMAC

Over the last 10 years, the demand and desire for bar-rier-free bathrooms has grown dramatically. Aside from providing accessibility and universal design for those with physical challenges, this phenomenon can be partially attributed to the baby boomers who are now finding they are not as mobile as in the past; even stepping into a tub or over a 150 mm (3in.) high shower curb can be difficult in some cases.

Over the last couple of years, there has been some new advancement in building material technology which now allows the construction of barrier-free bathrooms that are relatively easy to construct, functional, and perform extremely well.

Controlling moisture

One of the top challenges when designing and building barrier-free showers is moisture management. This is a systematic method to contain water in both liquid and vapor form and enable it to pass through an assembly predictably and efficiently using materials not adversely affected by moisture. Today there are liquid applied or sheet applied membranes that meet ANSI A118.10 (Load Bearing, Bondable Waterproof Membranes for Thin-set Ceramic Tile) which can go directly over drywall, making the structure completely waterproof before tiling begins.

Minimizing construction height

The next challenge when it comes to barrier-free appli-cations is limiting construction height. This is a particu-lar challenge when using a shower pan method with a 2-stage drain and a mortar-bed. This method creates excessive construction height as the minimum thickness of the mortar bed will be 31 mm at the lowest point, which then increases by approximately 6 mm every 305

mm to create the slope required for drainage. Depending on the size of the shower, the construction height can easily increase to 54 mm or thicker, which in barrier-free constructions can cause big challenges at the doorway/entrance to the bathroom.

Drain options

The arrival of ANSI A118.10 membranes in the early 1990s was followed about a decade later by the intro-duction of drains with an integrated bonding flange. This technology allowed a thin, load-bearing waterproof mem-brane to be adhered to the drain, making a waterproof connection at the top of the drain assembly. The advan-tage of this method is the low construction height can be maintained as these types of drains can be directly installed onto the substrate, with no mortar bed required.

Slope can be started basically from almost zero and, again, depending on the size of the shower room, rela-tively minimal heights can be maintained. For instance, a shower with a 1220 mm (48 in.) radius will have a max-imum construction height of only 24 mm (1 in.). These membranes are typically continued up the wall onto solid backing to ensure the assemblies are waterproof. In oth-er cases, an expanded high-density polystyrene board with bondable/waterproof facers can be substituted if nothing has been attached to the studs. The advantages of these boards are their light weight, R-value, vapor-re-sistance, and the fact they can be cut onsite with a utility knife.

Page 9: Setting Goals - Flooring Association Northwestflooringassociation.org/Q4WinterNewsletter/FAN E... · Starnet Other Please indicate type of business: Please indicate any industry groups/organizations

Another new entry into barrier-free bathrooms that ex-pands design opportunities is the introduction of linear drains. Several manufacturers have launched various designs that allow the drains to be placed in different stra-tegic locations. Most of them work with an ANSI A118.10 membrane and like the integrated bonding flange drains, the linear drains allow for low construction height assem-blies as they can be installed directly onto the substrate. Additionally, employing a linear drain allows the design of floors that have only one or two slopes, which allows for large-format tile or even stone slabs to be installed on the floor of the shower area.

Standard drains that are 100 to 150 mm (4 to 6 in.) x 100 to 150 mm only allow use of small-format tile because the floor either has to be designed in a cone configuration, or made into four planes to enable the water to be directed to the drain. In most cases, tiles no larger than 305 x 305 mm (12 x 12 in.) can be used to evacuate water. Linear drains, on the other hand, can be placed:

● Adjacent to the wall where the showerhead is located, allowing for a single slope

● In the middle of the shower floor, with two slopes con-verging to the drain

● In the threshold in front of the shower area, which once again would allow for a single-slope floor.

These drains come in numerous lengths, from as small as 50 cm up to 180 cm (20" to 72") and can handle tile or stone thicknesses from 3 to 25 mm (1/8” to 1”). In addition, different design grates are available, including a tileable grate which allows the drain to virtually disappear into the shower floor.

Benches and shower trays

Benches are a desirable and popular feature in barri-er-free showers as they allow the user to sit in comfort and safety while bathing. This design feature has been aided by the availability of prefabricated benches made of solid, expanded polystyrene (EPS) blocks or assem-bled-in-place extruded polystyrene (XPS) or EPS foam panels. Both versions allow for benches to be configured in many dimensions that are 100 per cent waterproof and do not require framing or an elaborate fastening system.

A final new technology available for barrier-free bath-rooms is prefabricated shower trays that are made with one, two, or four slopes. Typically, these EPS products

are not only user-friendly, but also contribute addition-al benefits. Utilizing a pre-sloped shower tray makes it simple to create a flat and plumb surface to reduce the possibility of lippage and ‘bird baths’ in the floor surface.

Breaking barriers in the bathroom

Barrier-free shower popularity has grown significantly over the last 5 to 10 years and shows no signs of stop-ping. Today with thin bondable waterproofing, prefab-ricated trays and benches, and linear drains, breaking barriers in the bathroom is simpler and more attractive and durable than ever before.
