Newspapers

Take out a blank piece of paper. Put the title “Deseret News” at the top.

Then choose a newspaper from the center of your desk.

What are the features of a newspaper article? What things do they tend to have?

Look at two or three articles and make a list of 5 things (features) almost all newspaper articles have. (ex. Headline)

What features do most newspaper articles have?

1 – Headline: A title that grabs the readers attention. Dramatic!! 2 – By line: Records the name of the journalist/author. 3 – Article text: The body of the article summarizes what happed,

who was involved, when and where it took place, and (sometimes) why it is newsworthy.

4 – Quotes: Journalists often include quotes from witnesses. “I saw it happen!”

5 – Pictures/Charts/Graphs/Maps: Pictures are used to grab the readers’ interest. Charts/Graphs/Maps are used to explain particular details of the story.

Early Years in Utah Many interesting and important events took place during

the first three years that the Mormons were in Utah. Read pages 120-127 and 136-139 in your book, taking

note of stories that were interesting to you. When you group has completed all of the reading, each

person will pick one event to focus a newspaper article on.

Write down 5 events that you think would be interesting to learn more about on your lined paper.

Day 1 - Fact Finding Pretend that you are a

journalist (reporter) who went to Utah between 1847-1850 to learn more about the Mormon communities in the Great Basin.

Your assignment is to find the most interesting story for your newspaper, research it, and write an article about it.

Today you will be fact finding. Read pages 120-127 and 136-139, taking note of interesting stories and important events.

You can also answer questions on your study guide as you do your “fact finding”!

By the end of the hour, you should have a list of 7-10 facts to use in your story.

Day 3 - Deseret News Take 13 minutes to finish reading pages 120-127

and 136-139. Answers questions 1-12 and 21-31 while you are

reading these parts of the book.

If your group finishes early, read pages 128-135 and work on questions 13-20.

Possible Stories Choose a subject to write an article about, then write down what

pages it can be found on. The Mormons settle in the Great Basin p.120-121 The First Winter & Crickets and Seagulls p. 122-123 Gold Rush in California! p.124-125 Mormon Immigrants travel to Utah p.126 Mormons settle towns across the Great Basin p.127-128 Utah becomes a Territory p.136-137 Handcarts to the West p.138-139

Go to the page in the book with that story on it and write down the following information:

Day 3 - Deseret News On the back of your lined paper, mark which story you plan to write

about then write 10 facts about the event that answer these types of questions.

(Note – it could take more than one sentence to adequately answer these questions!!!) Who was involved in the event? (Could be different groups or individuals.) What happened? When did it happen? Where did it happen?, Why is it an important event?

Quotes: Find 1-2 quotes from an eyewitness. Write it down as #11 on your paper.

Day 4 - Deseret News Advanced research: Now you will read a new article about your topic. You will write 10 notes about things you learned from this article

that were not in your book! Who was involved in the event? (Could be different groups or individuals.) What happened? When did it happen? Where did it happen?, Why is it an important event? Quotes: Find 1-2 more quotes from eyewitnesses. Write it accurately

with the name of the person who said it.

Tips for writing a successful article!

Arrange your information Decide which facts are the most important for your

readers to know. They should answer the 5 ‘w’ questions (who, what, when, where,

why) in the first paragraph or two.

Information that is useful, but not critical, should be in the middle of your article. Background information. Personal stories from witnesses.

Interesting details or other information should go at the end.

Deseret News When you have completed this, look at the organizer for your article and write your rough draft. Remember that newspaper

articles need to be interesting, a bit dramatic (to catch their readers attention), and to give the facts about the event.

Try to be unbiased (Don’t take sides!) in your writing.

Don’t copy the book!!! (That would result in a Z and a redo for you!)

Extra Credit: (Only attempt this if the rest of your article is finished!!)Newspapers did not have photographs at this time. Instead they used blocks (drawings carved into a plate to print on the paper). For extra points create a block picture to use for your article’s story.

I need one student volunteer each day with a colorful ticket to come into class and file papers.
