GARTENDear Seven Hills family and friends,
3
Though it was not without its challenges, the 2014 -15 school year also brought us a great deal to celebrate as a school community.
Despite an increasingly competitive college admissions climate, members of the Class of 2015 earned offers of admission from some of the nation’s leading universities: American, Barnard, Boston College, Boston University, Bowdoin, Bucknell, Berkeley, Carleton, Case Western, U. Chicago, U. Cincinnati, Claremont McKenna, Columbia, Cornell, DePaul, Duke, Elon, Emory, George Washington, Georgia Tech, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Kenyon, Miami, Michigan, NYU, Northwestern, OSU, Penn, Pomona, Purdue, Rice, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, and Washington University.
In May, 127 sophomores, juniors, and seniors took a total of 268 college-level AP exams, an astonishing 96% of those exams yielding college-qualifying scores of 3 or higher! To put this in perspective, 60% of AP students nationwide earn even one passing score of 3 or above; at Seven Hills, that figure is 99%! The mean score for Seven Hills was 4.16 out of 5.0, well above the 3.04 mean for AP students in Ohio or 2.82 nationwide.
Our swim team won the school’s first-ever team state championship while Middle and Upper School teams in several sports staged record playoff runs. Student participation in competitive athletics reached an all-time high, helped, in part, by the opening of our new Lower Fields Athletic Complex and other significant enhancements to our athletics facilities.
Our Middle and Upper School drama students earned regional recognition at the Junior Theater Festival and the Cappies, while fine and performing arts students in all four divisions thrilled us with extraordinary performances in a host of events throughout the year.
Now just 24 months into our Strategic Plan, the faculty has planned and executed a significant number of enhancements to our educational program. To prepare students for a global community, we have oriented literature and history courses even more fully toward global issues, dramatically expanded world language and exchange programs, and developed a series of electives focused on contemporary, global issues, studied from an interdisciplinary perspective. As a growing number of our students aspire to careers in science and technology, we have added a host of electives in engineering, computer science, biotechnology, and digital arts. We have also devel-oped a signature Middle School program called the Innovation Lab. This immersion in “design thinking,” based on research from Stanford University, is part of a school-wide effort to engage students in applying what they learn to real world problems.
In his new role as director of experiential learning, Nick Francis has developed a signature program to help students find “a path to purpose.” The Experiential Learning program is a student-driven, teacher-guided journey that begins with self-awareness. After personality inventories, assemblies with professionals and thought leaders in our community, and reflection activities, Nick guides students toward exploration experiences: online courses, camps, summer work or internships, and travel and exchange programs. For some students, this journey may culminate in a concentration in one of several interest areas: technology, the arts, entrepreneurship, global citizenship, environmental stewardship, or political engagement. The overall goal is to create multiple pathways for our students to discover who they are, what they love, and how they might utilize their unique talents in meaningful and fulfilling ways.
In sum, it continues to be a very exciting time at Seven Hills. These achievements have called for a great deal of time, care, and energy from our dedicated faculty and students. But they have also required the full support of this entire school community. We are deeply grateful for all you have done, and continue to do, to support the ambitious dreams of our students.
Sincerely,
Christopher P. Garten Head of School
This past year we celebrated the 40th anniversary of the merger that created The Seven Hills School. It was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on how far our school has come in a relatively short time. Consider, for example, just the last 15 years.
In 1998 -2007, the school embarked on a major effort to enhance its instructional facilities. The generous commitment of this entire community to the Campaign for One and All and a subsequent mini-campaign built Haile Hall, the early childhood center on the Doherty Campus, and, at Hillsdale, a new Upper School building, with state-of-the-art laboratories and technology infrastructure, our first-ever turf field, and the Donovan Arts Center, with the art, music, and drama classrooms that have fueled an explosion of interest in the fine and performing arts.
In 2007-2012, the Board devoted considerable energy to building the school’s endowment, which has grown from $12 million to $35 million over the last decade. The funds provided by the Critical Assets Campaign enable the school to attract and retain a world-class faculty, support ongoing faculty training and the development of an innovative, future-focused curriculum, and expand the financial aid program to extend the benefits of a Seven Hills education to a larger and much more diverse student population.
Now, guided by our Strategic Plan of 2013, we have begun a significant effort to refine the school’s educational program to ensure that our graduates have the skills to excel in an increasingly competitive global economy. In the last two years alone, Seven Hills has added a host of new programs in world languages, contemporary global issues, science and engineering, and biotechnology. We have expanded advisory, student support, and college counseling programs and introduced signature programs in design thinking and experiential learning. At the same time, we have expanded enrollment in the Middle and Upper School and added Beginnings, pre-kindergarten for two-year-olds, and a host of afterschool enrichment programs to serve our families with young children.
The lynchpin of our five-year strategic plan is an ambitious Master Site Plan. Over the next five years, we hope to modernize our facilities on both campuses to help build a more cohesive community and support a wide range of real world learning experiences for our students.
The opening of our new Lower Fields Athletic Complex last October and the imminent completion of the Taft Early Childhood Center has generated significant momentum by supporting important improvements in our athletics program and in the range of academic and enrichment programs we can offer to young families. At the same time we have completed an extensive renovation of the Doherty playground adjacent to Johnstone Place.
Having nearly completed these three important projects, the Board has turned its attention to securing leadership support for the next two items on our Master Site Plan, a new Center for Arts and Leadership, including up to a 450-seat auditorium, and some long-anticipated enhancements to our athletic facilities including, hopefully, five new tennis courts, a larger baseball field, and a new field house, with three indoor courts to support our rapidly expanding program.
It is a privilege to be associated with a school community so deeply committed to a process of continuous improvement. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I thank this entire school community for the important role you continue to play in sustaining and enhancing our school.

As we take in the complexities of the world, juxtaposed with the recent growth and evolution of Seven Hills, we quickly begin to see that our school is experiencing a singular moment in history.
In the way our students press forward with grit and determination to not only learn more, but learn differently; in the way our faculty pursue myriad ways to impart and exchange knowledge; in the way our teams exhibit character on the fields, and our youngest students embrace discovery, The Seven Hills School community is united by a deep commitment to uphold the highest standards in all that we do, enabling our students to develop arête, in an ever-changing world.
In keeping with our belief that we should always seek to broaden our vision, we are expanding our Lower, Middle, and Upper school course offerings and programs, in order to incorporate a more comprehen-sive global and contemporary curriculum. In that same light, we are responding to our need to increase course offerings in the areas of science, technology, engineer-ing, and math. From the arts disciplines, to design thinking, to areas of innovation, our Doherty, Lotspeich, Middle, and Upper school students are coding, building, and rethinking, across disciplines and divisions, every day.
The work and dedication of students and faculty within our fine and performing arts department have far exceeded anything we have seen in the recent past. The spark of steady development over the past five years has kindled advancements in fine and performing arts. That growth has ignited a vision to provide a facility – namely, the Center for Arts and Leadership – that will provide much needed space for our expanded arts programs, speaker presentations, student debate forums, community events, and much more.
At Seven Hills, we believe every Doherty, Lotspeich, Middle, and Upper school student will experience, personally, the benefits and joys of the many enhancements to our curriculum, facilities, and programs. We value the richness and depth of content present throughout our curriculum, our relationships, and in our daily routines. We know none of these remarkable accomplishments, across divisions, departments, grades, and disciplines at Seven Hills, is a coincidence. Rather, it is the product of supportive relationships, our students’ hard work, ongoing research, strategic planning, and the intuitive understanding of what our students need – and where they are headed.
For instance, with our new experiential learning program and an expanded college counseling program – now starting college counseling at ninth grade – we are further defining our role as a student-centered school. As we guide each student through his or her learning experience, we are also asking our students to identify and explore what they love, understanding that life and learning are inextricable.
In many ways, the seeds for what our students love are planted in the early years. On the Hillsdale Campus, we welcomed our youngest students to the new, state-of-the-art Nellie Leaman Taft Early Childhood Center, which is part of the Lotspeich Lower School. While we welcomed back returning pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students, we are thrilled to see our newest students – 2-year-olds who now attend pre-kindergarten for two-year-olds, launched on the Hillsdale Campus this fall.
The year of 2014-15 also brought sweeping successes in the areas of fine and performing arts, and athletics. In the area of athletics, we are seeing our school community move beyond expectations, into the realm where dreams have come true. After just one year of building, in the fall of 2014-15, Seven Hills opened an expansive athletics complex, allowing the school to emerge as home to one of the best K-12 athletic facilities in Greater Cincinnati.

The Business Office of The Seven Hills School is responsible for the preparation, integrity, and fair presentation of the financial statements and other accounting information in this annual report.
The school maintains a system of internal controls over financial reporting, which are designed to provide assurance to the school’s management and Board of Trustees that assets are protected and that transactions and events are recorded properly in the financial statements.
The Board of Trustees, through the Finance Committee, comprised of trustees not employed by the school, has adopted an Audit Subcommittee that includes engaging an independent accounting firm, Mellott & Mellott, P.L.L., to ensure that the financial statements are accurately presented.
The school has again maintained a balanced budget for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2015. In the strategic effort to maintain the affordability of the school, the administration, faculty and staff continue to find ways to reduce costs while persisting to prioritize teaching and learning.
Schoolwide operating efficiencies have been gained by increasing energy conservation, pruning unnecessary administrative positions, rethinking student-faculty ratios, and removing underenrolled programs.
The overall financial health of the school was again aided by the growth of the endowment, which provides funding for teacher salaries, financial aid, faculty professional development, and distinctive programming and technology.
Both annual giving and capital gifts enrich every part of the school. Most importantly, these gifts bridge the gap between tuition and the full cost of educating each child.

1921
The national trend toward STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) is boldly reflected at Seven Hills. “After years of having something like five engineers in a class, suddenly 20 percent of the Seven Hills Class of 2011 were applying to engineering schools,” said Seven Hills Assistant Head and Director of College Counseling Susan Marrs. “In 2012, it was 25 percent and in 2013, it was 30 percent.”
That defining observation points to the number of ways STEM education has fueled strategic objectives to increase science, math, and design thinking curriculum throughout all grades at Seven Hills. Last year, Lower School students learned to code in order to grasp more sophisticated computer programming concepts, and fifth graders researched and designed prototypes for inventions. Middle School students participated in a number of projects in the school’s new Innovation Lab, while Upper School students took engineering and 3D design classes. And, for the first time this fall, we introduced biotechnology and computer engineering courses as well.
As we enter the 2015-16 school year, Seven Hills faculty continue to expose our students to design thinking and problem solving – foundational skills for successful STEM learning. One approach
Howard, an automation engineer at Bosch, said the shift toward STEM underscores a “maker movement” – the growing need to design one’s own and reinvent better processes – that is rippling from areas like the West Coast to collegiate programs throughout the country, such as Harvard University’s four-year-old innovation lab. From breaking down the inner workings of a hand mixer to building electric circuits, the benefits of having the time and space to understand what is “under the hood” is not only rewarding, but essential, said Howard. “I’m counting on people looking to the future to provide my children with an education that’s relevant,” said Howard. “The Innovation Lab gives students that opportunity.”
Marrs said Seven Hills would continue to meet the needs and interests of students, from those who are mildly interested in the sciences, to those full-fledged STEM enthusiasts. “With programs like the Innovation Lab in the Middle School, new computer engineering courses in Upper School, and ongoing project-based learning in the sciences within the Lower School grades, we will continue to emphasize creative and critical thinking about math, science and technology, preparing our students to be problem-solvers and game changers in this ever-evolving world market.”
has been the way our faculty uses classroom space in nontraditional ways. Computer science teacher Brian Arnold has converted a classroom into a computer engineering lab equipped with breadboards and Arduinos. Over the summer, Lower School math teacher Liz Lorenz devoted time to convert a former kindergarten classroom into a math lab for use throughout the 2015-16 school year. Science department chair Karen Glum transformed a typical classroom into an ever-changing Innovation Lab, a “boneyard” of broken appliances and recycled parts and lots of tools. After a first successful pilot year leading projects in the lab, Glum said she is thrilled with her students’ enthusiasm to observe, understand, take apart, and rebuild. This fall Glum introduced her curriculum for the Innovation Lab, launching the first official program, where students might, for example, design a ramp to give people in wheelchairs better access to the beach, or develop a specialized filter to purify water for drinking. This immersion in design thinking, based on research from Stanford University, is part of an overall effort to engage students in applying what they learn to real world problems.
Seven Hills parent Frank Howard said he became interested in volunteering to help Glum in the Innovation Lab because he believes in the purpose of what she does.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, STEM jobs are growing at 1.7 times the rate of non-STEM jobs, and computer science jobs alone are expected to jump 15 percent from 2012 to 2022. The Obama administration is investing millions of dollars to produce an
additional one million STEM undergrads by 2022.

The Seven Hi l ls Annual Fund
$642,627
For the second year in a row, YOU broke the record! With a goal of $1,300,000 we are
thrilled to announce that we have met and surpassed that goal by over $85,000 and have
achieved an all-time Seven Hills Annual Fund record of $1,385,082. We are so grateful for
your continued support and commitment to Seven Hills.
The success of the program was achieved through outstanding participation percentages across
all constituencies, and new and increased gifts helping to obtain $100,000 from The John
Hauck Foundation. Simply put, more members of our community believe in the importance of
the Fund and are willing to support at a greater level.
Seven Hills depends on Annual Fund gifts to bridge the gap between operational expenses and
income from tuition, fees and other sources. While tuition covers 80% of educating each child
for the academic year, The Seven Hills Annual Fund covers a portion of the remaining 20%.
Gifts are put to immediate use on campus, in the classroom, and on the fields.
We thank you for partnering with us to help give our students the resources and experiences
that will fully prepare them for all that lies ahead. The Seven Hills Annual Fund creates student
experiences that help shape their values, stimulate their creativity, and evoke their compassion.
It gives teachers additional means to raise the bar in the classroom by continuously updating
their technology, resources, and accessing professional development opportunities. The Seven
Hills Annual Fund helps sustain the foundation of excellence upon which Seven Hills continues
to flourish.
A special thanks to Jennifer Stein, Trustee and Development Committee Chair, the Development
Committee, and the 247 annual giving volunteers who made calls, wrote notes, helped
promote annual giving and communicated the importance of The Seven Hills Annual Fund. Your
participation, effort, and enthusiasm help make the above accomplishments possible.
The tradition of philanthropy at Seven Hills is strong and the success of this year's Annual Fund
solidifies your commitment and passion for our special place. For that, and for all you do for
the school, we thank you.
Because of you … more is possible.
Note: Donors who represent more than one group are tallied in only one category according to the order of priority shown above.

A growing focus on global and contemporary education reflects the reality that our world is getting smaller.
In a variety of settings, Seven Hills faculty and administration have oriented literature and history courses even more fully toward global issues. From the annual, indepth study of a country on the Doherty Campus, to the cross-continental study in kindergarten on the Hillsdale Campus, a new sixth-grade Spanish curriculum and the Middle School’s Global Education Day, and new foreign exchange programs to Greece and Italy, global learning is very much part of our students’ everyday experiences.
“The more that students can see how history applies to the world they are living in, the better they realize how crucial it is to understand the past,” said history department chair Brian Wabler, who introduced a new class, environmental history, this fall. “We are all living in an increasingly complex world and as students understand more about that world, they will be able to be more engaged citizens.” The new environmental history class – a new course that teaches students how the relationships between
“Middle and high school are very important times to teach students to think globally instead of getting so involved in our teeny little world,” said Dimling, who spoke to the Upper School last January about The Global Soap Project, which provides recycled soap to people in developing countries. “We need to know that two billion people in the world don’t have toilets. But we also need to know that poor doesn’t equal problem, and that the poorest person in Malawi could teach us something.”
Dimling continued, “Sometimes it is better to stop talking and just listen. When we do that we realize how little we know and how much we have to learn. We become true global citizens.”
Whether looking back to understand the implications of a culture of people from a historic perspective, or moving forward to learn from people within local and global communities, Seven Hills students are learning to reach across the table and around the world, to understand and appreciate the value of perspectives, processes, struggles, and histories that are unlike their own.
people and their environments significantly affect history – is just the newest in a suite of Upper School course offerings that take a global approach.
“We have introduced a number of courses recently in the history department with this aim – global issues, postmodern America, war and peace since 1945, and now, environmental history,” said Wabler. “Many of our traditional courses have become more global over the years as well, particularly world history I and world history II, which used to focus primarily on Europe but now have a much wider focus.”
The ability to view the world with a broader, deeper lens, from different angles, and, at times, zoom in on the origin of certain circumstances in parts of the world is very much part of the future of education. With so many students interested in areas of community service and entrepreneurialism, being able to tap into a more layered understanding of a situation and culture other than one’s own is a rare and valuable skillset, said Seven Hills alumna Lilly Dimling `85, director of programs at The Global Soap Project.

Early Childhood Education at Seven Hills encompasses child-centered, discovery-based learning experiences for everyone from parents and toddlers, to pre-kindergarteners as young as 2, to kindergarteners.
The Beginnings Parent & Toddler Enrichment Program, where parents and their toddlers ages 12-24 months participate in various learning activities, flourishes as an outstanding network of parent-to-teacher and parent-to-parent support during each of the 12-week sessions on both campuses throughout the school year.
New in 2014-15 on the Doherty Campus, and launching this year on the Hillsdale Campus, pre-kindergarten for 2-year-olds offers a learning experience specifically tailored to the needs and curiosities of 2-year-olds. Throughout the year, the tiny students explore dozens of enrichment opportunities, as our teachers provide a curriculum that recognizes each child’s unique talents and readiness level. While learning about symphonic instruments, planting organic gardens, or building cardboard castles, the young students are also learning about scientific discovery and developing analytical thinking skills. Head of Lower School on the Doherty Campus
Head of Lower School on the Lotspeich Campus Carolyn Fox said the new building and playscape that greeted students and families this fall is the product of careful and mindful planning. “The outdoor space affords extended learning in a natural environment with an appropriately fun and safe area for our new program for 2-year-olds,” said Fox. “Our exceptional early childhood team of teachers, skilled and trained in early childhood, now has an exceptional learning space as well, to accommodate the innovative plans for our program.”
Early Childhood Director on the Hillsdale Campus Kara Meador said teachers couldn’t be more enthusiastic or passionate, as they welcomed Seven Hills’ newest and youngest students to the campus. “Our spacious new building will provide all with room for class gatherings, performances, and learning that extends outside of our classroom doors, adding to our sense of community and ability to learn and explore in multiple environments,” said Meador. “The Early Childhood Center will be a foundation for children as they start their journey as Seven Hills students.”
Patti Guethlein said, “The pre-kindergarten curriculum was designed to meet the unique needs of 2-year-olds. They are not ‘young threes.’ They are solidly and joyfully 2-year-old learners.”
Imbued with that same sense of joy and discovery, Seven Hills pre-kindergarten and kindergarten welcome students into a unique opportunity to spend each day in their own small community. “Each early childhood classroom is prepared and the curriculum designed to nurture the social, emotional and academic growth of the individual child,” said pre-kindergarten teacher Ginger Rubin. “While gaining comfort and self-confidence in their own classroom, the children are able to venture out into a larger world where third graders read stories to them, they attend a fifth grade play, and they make holiday cards for those in need. The opportunities are endless.”
Pre-kindergarten for two-year-olds, which has thrived on the Doherty Campus for the past two years, opened on the Hillsdale Campus this fall in the new Nellie Leaman Taft Early Childhood Center. The 17,500 sq. ft. building, which is part of the Lotspeich Lower School, also houses our Beginnings Parent & Toddler Enrichment Program, pre-kindergarten, and kindergarten.

“I have the most vivid memories of being so happy and engaged when I was in pre-kindergarten at Seven Hills. It’s astonishing. I remember how the classroom was laid out. On the playground there was a tree that I used to hang upside down on. I just remember being very active and doing all sorts of
things. The teachers at Seven Hills really understand child development and how children learn.” – Julie Witten `94

Seven Hills fine and performing arts programs have taken definitive steps to arrive at unprecedented successes across divisions.
During the 2014-15 school year, both the Middle and Upper school theater department added a third production to their calendar of events. Both divisions participated in Project 38 – the innovative arts education initiative of Cincinnati Shakespeare Company – while the Middle School theater department performed The Tempest at Washington Park, and, for the first time, sent several students to participate in the Junior Theater Festival in Atlanta, Ga.
The sweeping developments throughout Seven Hills’ fine arts program last year are a reflection of the value the school places on comprehensive fine arts education. The Upper School theater department participated in the Greater Cincinnati Cappies – a prestigious, student-critiqued regional high school competition patterned after the Oscars – during the
into students’ everyday lives, said Seven Hills parent and Educational Theatre Association executive director Julie Cohen Theobald. “From the time my children started in pre-kindergarten, music, drama, and art were part of their everyday education and integrated into the school culture,” said Theobald. “There are always student art projects on the walls. The musical performances are a highlight of the school year, and theater is also integrated into the regular classroom to improve reading and writing skills.”
Seven Hills’ dynamic fine and performing arts program sets the foundation for endless possibilities as we move forward with a capital campaign for the multi-purpose Center for Arts and Leadership. All of these initiatives reflect and define the sophistication and vision of performing arts as our students and faculty continue to expand the depth of our programs and build upon our successes.
2014-15 school year, with a win in one category and seven other nominations. In April, 50 performing arts students traveled to Chicago to attend performances and participate in a professional theater improv workshop.
“Our fine and performing arts programs continue to grow through several exciting new projects and events that took place last school year, and more to be offered this year,” said fine and performing arts chair Tina Kuhlman. “We are seeing a level of excitement and interest in the arts throughout our entire student body, both for theater students and non-theater students. As a school, our dedication to the arts is boundless.”
Enhancements to the fine arts program also reached the Lower School, as well, with the fall launch of an early instrumen-tal program for fourth and fifth graders interested in playing a wind or string instrument. The broad, sequential nature of the fine arts program at Seven Hills illustrates how the program is interwoven

" We should be grateful for the drama program in the Lower School. According to the U.S. Department of Education, only 4 percent of elementary schools in the U.S. have curricular theater, so we have been given a great gift with Russell W hite.”

In less than 12 months, from conception to engineering, The Seven Hills School community took a major step forward last fall, opening the state-of-the-art Lower Fields Athletic Complex, which includes the DeWitt Good Auxiliary Field. The collaborative effort, which positioned Seven Hills as home to one of the largest outdoor athletic facilities in the Cincin-nati area, continues to highlight the strength of leadership in Seven Hills’ athletic program, the camaraderie among athletics faculty and coaching staff, and lasting donor partnerships. Seven Hills students and families now enjoy the use of three turf fields measuring a total of 175,000 sq. ft., a full-service concession stand, an updated softball field, spectator seating, stadium lighting, an access road, and nearby parking.
“The strength of our facilities mirrors the dedication of our students on the fields and courts, in our pool lanes, and at each and every game,” said athletic director Brian Phelps. “Our athletics department is built upon a foundation of character and community.”
In addition to providing Seven Hills teams with top-notch facilities for grades one through 12, the new facilities are already attracting the interests of prospective students and their families.
said Rogers, who led the project through to completion. “None of these new developments would be possible if it weren’t for the intuitive vision of (athletic director) Brian Phelps and partnerships formed and fostered between our athletics program and Seven Hills families. We are thrilled to take part in this next era of athletic excellence at Seven Hills.”
It goes without saying that our new athletic complex will continue to enrich outdoor and indoor athletic programs for every Seven Hills student for many years to come.
The new complex has also proven to be self-sufficient, in terms of maintenance cost. Facilities rental partnerships with both Ohio Elite Soccer Academy and Cincy Royals Lacrosse club teams have brought in revenue that far exceeded Phelps’ goal of $80,000 for the 2014-15 school year. All revenue brought in as a result of facilities rental is earmarked for maintenance of the turf fields.
Phelps said the significant growth of the athletic program is due to the outpouring of support from the Seven Hills community. “Our partners, Athletic Facilities Task Force Chair Patrick Rogers, and countless others, have proven to be exceptional supporters of Seven Hills athletics at every turn,” said Phelps. “Their insights have been invaluable. We couldn’t have done any of this without their leadership.”
The same spirit of collaboration and community that set the foundation for Seven Hills’ athletic program in years past will continue to fuel future expansion. Phelps said he hopes the success and benefits of the current Lower Fields Athletic Complex will help build momentum to move toward Phase II of construction. “Seven Hills is gaining a name within the Greater Cincinnati area for top athletic facilities,”

The collaborative nature of Seven Hills’ new experiential learning program and our student-centered college counseling department gives students an opportunity to explore what they love while honing their academic interests, in a student-driven, teacher-guided journey that
begins with self-awareness and self-discovery. “The experiential learning program is a means for students to identify and build on their strengths and interests,” said Head of Upper School Matt Bolton. “Under experiential learning director Nick Francis’ capable leadership, this new program provides our students opportunities to better tailor their coursework to their emerging interests, drawing connections between academic classes, extracurricular pursuits, and the larger world outside of Seven Hills.”
college counselor who will follow them throughout their Upper School career.
“Our college counseling program is fundamentally student-centered,” said Bolton. “Susan Marrs and our team of college counselors guide students through research and academic experiences that ultimately help them identify what they want in their college of choice, and where they will thrive.”
University of Cincinnati Vice Provost for Undergraduate Affairs Gigi Escoe said programs like experiential learning give students the tools to discover and build upon their interests. “High school students don’t need to know specifics but they need to put themselves onto an academic pathway that they will refine as they mature,” said Escoe, who worked with Nick Francis and a Board task force to develop the experiential learning program.
Seven Hills is among a small number of progressive Upper Schools that encourage students to focus on their interests while helping them achieve a sense of purpose. With experiential learning and college counseling as a strong and constant resource, Seven Hills students are finding ways to better know themselves and their world, and to follow an individualized path through the Upper School that connects to who they are and where they want to be.
The journey works like this: Francis and the ninth grade advisors work with freshmen to help them identify their interests through personality inventories, assemblies from professionals, and reflection activities. He then guides students toward exploration experiences, such as online courses, camps, summer internships, or exchange programs. For some students who elect to pursue a particular area of interest, this journey may culminate in a Concentration in one of several interest areas: technology, the arts, entrepreneurship, global citizenship, environmental stewardship, or political engagement. Experiential Learning Mission Statement:
By the time every student leaves Seven
Hills we will have helped him/her to
develop self-awareness of where his/
her interests lie, facilitated exploration
of those interests, and provided him/her
with pertinent real world experiences,
so that he/she has the confidence
to explore and embrace life beyond
high school.
Our students will follow an individualized path...
“Experiential learning is a way for students to better know themselves and their world, and to follow an individualized path through the Upper School that connects to what they most want to learn.” –Head of Upper School Matt Bolton.
