SUNDAYS IN 2017 ...perfect for drama queens!Sherlock Season 4 on Masterpiece three-part series premieres SUN Jan 1 | 9p

Sherlock returns this month with three brand-new episodes promising laughter, tears, surprises and extraordinary adventures. Season 4 opens with the mercurial Sherlock Holmes back once more on British soil, as Dr. Watson and his wife, Mary, prepare for their biggest challenge yet: becoming parents.

Victoria on Masterpiece seven-part series premieres SUN Jan 15 | 9p

This compelling historical drama begins with Victoria (Jenna Coleman) as she becomes queen in 1837 at the age of 18. It follows her education in politics and her relationship with Lord Melbourne (Rufus Sewell), her first prime minister and intimate friend, as well as her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert (Tom Hughes). Victoria paints a portrait of a monarch who was raised to be the pawn of her powerful elders but who wasted no time in showing the empire who was in charge.

Mercy Street Season 2 six-part series premieres SUN Jan 22 | 8p

The acclaimed Civil War-era drama returns! In Season 2, allegiances blur, loyalties shift and the drama intensifies as the scope of the war pushes beyond the Mansion House hospital. The series continues to explore the chaotic lives and complicated interpersonal dynamics of Dr. Foster, Nurse Mary and the Green family—but it also introduces a number of new elements, taking viewers into the halls of Confederate power and the lives of newly freed African Americans.

FRONTLINE Divided States of America TUE and WED, Jan 17–18 | 9p

Days before the inauguration of the 45th president, FRONTLINE looks back at events during the Obama presidency that have revealed deep divisions in America and examines the country that the new president will inherit. Divided States offers an in-depth view of the partisanship that gridlocked Washington and charged the 2016 presidential campaign; the rise of populist anger on both sides of the aisle; and the racial tensions that have erupted throughout the U.S.

what to watch

Command and Control TUE Jan 10 | 9p image courtesy of wgbh

Television’s most-watched history series brings to life the incredible characters and fascinating stories that have shaped America’s past and present. New documentaries this month are:

Command and Control TUE Jan 10 | 9pDiscover the terrifying truth behind one of America’s most dangerous nuclear accidents—the deadly 1980 incident at an Arkansas Titan II missile complex—in a chilling, minute-by-minute account of this long-hidden story.

Rachel Carson TUE Jan 24 | 8pA new documentary follows the life of the influential scientist and writer. Inspired by recent scholarship, the film illuminates the public and private life of the woman whose writings revolutionized how we understand our relationship with the natural world.

The Race Underground TUE Jan 31 | 9pIn the late 19th century, as America’s largest cities grew congested, the time had come to replace the horse-pulled carriages clogging the streets with a faster, cleaner, safer form of transportation. Ultimately, Boston overcame a litany of engineering challenges, the selfish interests of businessmen and the great fears of its citizenry to construct America’s first subway.
