Cosmo SheldrakeNation of Shopkeepers8/4/15 With the Easter break coming to a close and the sun out in full force for what seemed like the first time this year in Leeds, what a better way to spend the afternoon than donning the sunglasses and sipping on cider whilst waiting for some free music at our very own Nation of Shopkeepers. Things started off pretty quietly but as each support band finished a new wave of people started to fill in the small space in front of the stage ready for Cosmo Sheldrake, and it soon came pretty apparent as to why. Sheldrake was instantly able to grab every single persons attention with his one man band station, using an impressive array of loops and vocals to build up his wall of sound. He brings poetry alive, re-imagining the words of William Blake and Edward Lear to his eccentric style, and regularly improvising tracks throughout his set to keep things fresh, combining beat boxing, keys, and what can only be described as genius nonsense for lyrics. The sounds this guy can make with his mouth are incredible, and these spontaneous pieces, being such a stand out point of his set, left me completely in awe, and only halfway through his set I found myself grabbing a couple of copies of his records from the merch stand. Check out his music, and if you get the chance to see him live, do not miss it.

For fans of: East India Youth, Alt-j

MommyXavier DolanHyde Park Picture House Two of Leeds’ gems as far as culture goes find themselves only a two minute walk away from each other, bringing a certain beauty to a part of the City you might not necessarily venture down otherwise (without being a student of course). With the Brudenell at one end The Picture House sits on the opposite corner and being the oldest cinema left in the country, it absolutely looks the part. From the traditional ticket booth to the red curtains that are still used as they were once intended it’s easy to feel taken back in time to experience what proper cinema can be. Putting on the best in independent cinema tonight we are watching the latest film by Xavier Dolan. At only 26 the French-Canadian Director and actor already has a back catalogue of incredible films, and newly released ‘Mommy’ could arguably be his best yet! This beautifully made yet hard hitting drama about the difficult relationship between a mother, a son with severe ADHD and their mysterious neighbour will leave emotions both good and bad, running high long after you’ve left the cinema. With a brilliant cast to match up to Dolans exceptional character writing you develop immediate attachments to the three leads as they in turn grown deep attachments to each other. Not an easy watch by any means, but with a film industry currently so saturated with dull ideas and uninspired remakes you can’t help but feel a breath of fresh air to see that film makers and independent cinemas such as the Picture House, are still fighting hard to hold their place amongst the mundane.

Nai HarvestBrudenell Social ClubThe Key Club23/4/15 Now I’ve talked about the weather a lot so far, but today was by far the best day of the year and not a single person wanted to be inside. Every patch of grass was covered, from the small courtyard outside my accommodation to the corner of greenery sandwiched between Dry Dock and the two busy roads either side. Starting to feel like summer had really arrived, Sheffield two-piece Nai Harvest seemed like a great way to kick it off with their fuzzy indie/punk track, such as Buttercup, sounding blissfully like summer in a song. Due to an overbooking at the Brudenell this gig got moved all the way over to The Key Club, a venue I had not yet explored though knew enough that it was underground and as far from the Sun as humanly possible. At least over at the Brudenell you could pop out in-between bands to enjoy your drink in what was left of the evening light, at the Key Club however, the prospect of standing outside the barbers on the corner of the Merrion Centre was not quite as appealing, not to mention the fact the price of a pint at Brudenell is far more reasonable! I spent the majority of the gig near the back, watching the singers hair flop back and forth as he thrashes about the stage and start think about how these two-piece bands seem to be the fashion these days with bands like slaves, Drenge and Royal Blood all in the limelight. NarcsNation of Shopkeepers23/4/15 As we leave the Key Club we head homeward through the city centre but are stopped just outside the window of Nation to the sounds and sights of more live music. After a few minutes we get greeted at the window by a very enthusiastic fan who shoves a pad of paper up against the glass, apparently the band currently on are called strange bones. The guy then goes back to his dancing near the front of the stage. We begin to think about turning away but our new friend returns with another message reading, ‘Narcs next! Free gig, come in!’ so not wanting to disappoint and more than happy for some more music we decide to go grab a drink and see what’s going on. Narcs are a punchy alternative rock band who like to play loud and fiercely. Their lead prefers to spend most of his time either stood off stage directly on the front row or rolling about on the floor Angus Young style. Only as I look up now from my desk writing do I realize that I have in fact come across Narcs before, as hidden on my shelf is a copy of their album I was given back in October at another gig of theirs. Two gigs in one night, can’t exactly go wrong there. Whoever the man out there with the notepad is, I’d like to thank you greatly!

Painting in Time The Tetley3/4 - 5/7/15

Hit by yet more good weather at the start of April it seemed like a great day for a walk and after some lunch we headed down towards the canals for a wonder but ended up being turned around all too quickly by a locked gate. A bit lost for what to do next we remembered The Tetley wasn’t far away and figured why not give that a try instead. With the very deceitful looking ASDA offices behind and the unmistakable Leeds redbrick facade you can’t miss the Tetley as it looms over you on approach. With a lack of knowledge on the exhibition we had to hunt down a flyer for some info on the work and started making our way round the colourful and varied array of pieces on offer. Reinterpreting Painting into sculpture, performance and also film, stand out pieces tended to be the ones we were able to interact with. This included Buddha boards - where you were able to paint temporary works with water, and then sit and watch as they evaporate in front of you - as well as Yoko Ono’s toilet, that you are encouraged to hammer a nail into in order to complete the painting, making it as much the public’s as it is Yoko’s. After the initial reservations this exhibition was a colourful look into the ever changing world of painting.

Painting in Time is running at the Tetley up until July 5th

Girl FriendBrudenell Social Club12/4/15

Everyone knows the Brudenell is the go to place for gigs in Leeds, whether it’s a packed out show or a band as yet unheard of, you’re never left feeling unwelcome, and anything there goes washed down well with that can of 2.50 red stripe. We arrived pretty late on and were already met with some familiar faces out in the smoking area (it’s almost impossible not to see someone you know down here) and after a quick chat we headed in. The place was pretty quiet tonight, with an odd mix of students who seemed to have never set foot in there before as well as locals just along for the ride. Sounding something like a cross between daughter and the xx, the support were just finishing up, making way for headline act Girl Friend, and with a string of pretty singles behind them and plenty of blog hype currently online, the band had no fear in showing off their most sparkly outfits and best poses as they played to a sparsely crowded venue. I notice the vague acquaintances from my student digs all dancing at the front and spend some time figuring out how I know them. Sadly I wasn’t feeling the dancing myself and spent majority of the gig sat waiting to hear the few tracks I did know by the band whilst the rest of the set seemed to blend into one relatively similar sounding song. However, their singles sounded pretty good live and although something seemed a little bit lacking in Girl Friends performance plenty still seemed impressed. For fans of: Editors, Ballet School

Record Store Day 18/4/15

It was the annual installment of Record Store Day the other week, where music and vinyl enthusiasts were all out in force to pick up their special releases from varied acts around the world, made only available while stocks last in independent record shops for a limited time. While Jumbo records played host to Marsicians and a special signing from George Clinton, Crash had a constant queue going up the street from the early hours... and I was stuck at work, missing all the fun. Luckily however, I had a representative out on the streets keeping me jealous through texts over the day about all the exciting things going on. My time spent serving people their ‘freshly made this morning’ cakes however was not completely the end of the world though, as I was able to get to Crash the day after with my hard earned tips and pick up a few leftovers that included Courtney Barnett and The Flaming Lips. Missing the boat on this one but highlight of the day had looked to be the special package that Leeds based band Weirds came out with, teaming up with loads of other Indie favourites in the city such as Tall Boys Beer Market, Blegrave Music Hall and more to bring you an exciting package consisting of a record, an exclusive beer and also a zine (among other things) to keep you going. Note to self, don’t be working next time.
