Radetzky March . JOHANN STRAUSS, SR. One of the most famous Austrian military marches composed by Johann Strauss,

Sr., on the occasion of the victories of Field Marshal Radetzky in Italy.

Erzherzog Albrecht Marsch (Archduke Albrecht March) . KARL KOMZAK Like many other Austrian composers of light music Karl Komzak, known by his

waltz "Badner Madln" (Girls of Baden), also composed military marches. Archduke Albrecht was a famous Austrian general.

by Julius Herrmann, "Come In" by Carl Michael Ziehrer, "Wine, Woman and Song" by Johann Strauss, "Burghers of Vienna" by Carl Michael Ziehrer, "Treasure Waltz" from "The Gypsy Baron" by Johann Strauss, "My Career of Life Is Love and Joy" by Josef Strauss.

The court ball at Schonbrunn was one of the biggest social events of the season during the period of the Emperors. The leading Viennese composers of waltzes, such as Johann Strauss, Josef Strauss, and Carl Michael Ziehrer, wrote their most beautiful compositions for this climax of the carnival of Vienna.

Kaiserjagermarsch (March of the Emperor's Riflemen) KARL MUHLBERGER One of the regiments of oldest tradition of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy was

the Emperor's Riflemen. Each regiment took pride in distinguishing itself from others by a special march.

Gumpoldskirchner Kindermarsch (Children's March) JOSEF WOLFGANG ZIEGLER The Children's Choir originated from the school choir of the small village of

Gumpoldskirchen, one of the most famous wine making places of Austria, situated on the slope of the Wienerwald (forest of Vienna). Boys and girls meet for singing during their spare hours.

G'schichten aus dem Wienerwald (Tales of the Vienna Woods) JOHANN STRAUSS Thousands of Viennese are attracted each Sunday by the forest of Vienna, the hills,

vineyards and woods of which surround the city. In this waltz Johann Strauss has kept alive the stories nature tells to the tired people of a big city .

Tiroler Buben (Tyrolian Boys) Austrian National Song Each province of Austria has a vast treasure of national songs as different from each

Unter der lachenden Sonne (Under the Laughing Sun) KARL EISELE March of the most beautiful and best known popular songs : "Hinaus in die Ferne"

(Let Us Go Far Away), "Lang, lang ist's her" (It Was a Long Time Ago), "Wer will unter die Soldaten" (Who Wants to J oin the Army), "Ach wie ist's moglich dann" (Oh, How Is It Possible Then), "Muss i denn, muss i denn zum SUidtle hinaus" (Must I Leave This Beautiful City).

Local concerts by Austrian military bands were very popular with the population and many composers have written their best melodies for these concerts.

Johann Strauss, is played by a Schrammel ensembJe. Schrammel quartets or trios, insti­tu ted first by the composer Josef Schrammel in the past century, are small orchestras pJaying for guests in the numerous bars of Grinzing and Sievering, suburbs of Vienna.

Gibt's in Wien a Hetz, a Draherei (There Is Much Fun in Vienna), from "Friihling im Prater" (Spring in the Prater) . ROBERT STOLZ This song comes from an operetta by Robert Stolz who has become very popular

Leise, ganz leise (Gently, Most Gently), from "Ein Walzertraum" (Waltz Dream) OSCAR STRAUS The operetta "Ein Walzertraum" made the composer, Oscar Straus, famous over­

Ieb tanz mit dir ins Himmelreich (I Am Dancing to Heaven with You), from "Der Zigeunerprimas" (Sari) EMERICH KALMAN The operetta of Vienna owes the new period of greatest perfection after Johann

Strauss and Franz Lehar to the Hungarian Emerich Kalman and his operettas, "Sari," "Countess Maritza" and "Csardas Princess."

celebrating Vienna, its people and landscape in song: "Wien wird bei Nacht erst schon" (Vienna Gets Beautiful at Night Only) by Robert Stolz, "Mei Muatterl war a Weanerin" (My Dear Mother Was a Viennese Girl) by Ludwig Gruber, "Frlihlingsluft" (Spring Breezes) by Josef Strauss, "Er soil dein Herr sein" (He Shall Be Thy Lord) from the operetta "Der Bettlestudent" (The Pauper Student) by Carl Millocker, The Military March by Franz Schubert, The Aviator's March by Franz Dostal, and the finale to music by Herrmann and Nico Dostal.

Mir san vom k.u.k. (We Are the Boys of the Imperial and Royal Regiment) Deutschmeister March AUGUST WILHELM JUREK The Deutschmeister was the local regiment of Vienna. Its famous regimental band,

among whose leaders was Carl M. Ziehrer, played for the changing of the guard of the imperial palace.

This operetta, called the first Austrian musical, was composed in collaboration by Robert Stolz, Ralph Benatzky and Bruno Granichstaedten. The "White Horse" is an inn on Lake Wolfgang in Salzburg.

Holzhackerbuam (Woodcutter Boys) Alpine March JOSEF F. WAGNER

Lumbermen are called woodcutters in the Austrian Alpine regions. They match their strength on the eve of a holiday by woodcutting, and the one who fells the tree first is winner.

Das Fiakerlied (The Cabman's Song) GUSTAV PICK

This is the song of an Austrian cabman who tells us he cannot leave his cab and horses. In the last verse he has a vision that his coffin will be taken to the cemetery by his own cab and horses.

ERWIN VON GROSS with SCHRAMMELN

Wien, Wien nur du allein (It's You Alone, Vienna) RUDOLF SIECZYNSKI

Composing was the hobby of Dr. Rudolf Sieczynski, a high government official of Austria, who died a few years ago. Of his hundreds of songs, this, the most famous, was written at the Cobenzl, the well-known restaurant deep in the Vienna woods.

Prinz Eugen Marsch (Prince Eugene March) A. LEONHARDT

Prince Eugene of Savoy, the great general of the 18th century, continues to be the Austrian hero who put an end to the Turkish danger by his victory at Belgrade.

Der alte Trommler (The Old Drummer) JULIUS HERRMANN

Julius Herrmann composed this march for his old drummer who died a few years ago at the age of eighty. He had been drummer with the Deutschmeister ever since he was a young boy.

Excerpt from "Kaiserwalzer" (Waltz dedicated to the Emperor) JOHANN STRAUSS

The traditional Opera Ball of Vienna, which was the most important ball of the carnival, was opened by the "Kaiserwalzer" during the imperial period. Johann Strauss composed it for his ruler.
