RELIGIOUS AFFAIRSCAMINOS OF EMOTION

As can only be expected, Écija's EASTER WEEK is renowned for its beautiful, centuries-old Baroque sculptures, which were created by some of the most important image makers, including Juan de Mesa, Montes de Oca and Gaspar de Águila, among others. Thirteen brotherhoods and one parish group undertake their stations of penance alongside these beautiful sculptures during Easter Week.

Écija's Easter celebrations date back to the 15th century, meaning that the town is heir to centuries of devotion. Some of today’s processions are recognised for preserving a style unique to Écija: men carry the �oats, taking their weight on the beams that protrude from them, in contrast to Seville, where the bearers are hidden beneath the �oats. They wear tunics and hoods covering their faces. The sculptures are positioned atop tall, square pedestals (unlike the current, rectangular pedestals), and illuminated with decorative candelabra. The height of such ensembles is quite extraordinary. The town's palaces, stately houses and beautiful historic quarter make the perfect backdrop for the fervour with which the locals celebrate this festivity.

HERITAGECAMINOS OF CULTURE

Écija is home to many PALACES, such as PEÑAFLOR PALACE (16th-18th century), boasting an impressive façade decorated with fresco paintings; BENAMEJÍ PALACE, site of the town's history museum, which exhibits important archaeological artefacts, such as the Wounded Amazon and Roman mosaics; VALDEHERMOSO PALACE, with a 16th-century plateresque portal, SANTAELLA PALACE and PALMA HISTORIC MUSEUM HOUSE, with 19th-century furniture and wonderful Mudejar co�ered ceilings with interlace patterns.

The town is also home to some wonderful examples of religious architecture, including the 15th-century Gothic-Mudejar SANTIAGO CHURCH, SANTA CRUZ CHURCH, LA CONCEPCIÓN CHURCH, locally known as 'EL HOSPITALITO', with its admirable 16th-century co�ered ceiling with interlace patterns, SANTA MARÍA CHURCH, erected

during the transition between Baroque and Neo-classical styles and home to an important archaeological collection; the LOS DESCALZOS CHURCH, an Andalusian Baroque treasure, and SAN JUAN CHURCH, whose Baroque tower is one of the most emblematic in the town.

GASTRONOMYCAMINOS OF THE SENSES

Écija's gastronomy re�ects its history. Using the ingredients produced by the town's fertile lands, the main dishes are GAZPACHO, SALMOREJO, ESPINACAS LABRADAS (a spinach-based dish) and SOPA DE GATO, a variant of ajoblanco, a garlic-based chilled cream with peppers and tomatoes. Other typical dishes are OXTAIL, WILD ASPARAGUS or FLAMENQUINES, which consist of deep-fried crumbed rolls of pork loin and ham. Écija is also renowned for its MOLLETE bread rolls, which are enjoyed throughout the region for breakfast, especially with manteca colorá (orange-coloured lard).

The town also boasts a rich and varied cake and pastry tradition, the most famous sweets being EL ECIJANO YEMAS (egg yolk and sugar), TORTAS, and exquisite convent-made cake and pastry, including BIZCOCHOS MARROQUIÉS (Moorish cakes) and HAZELNUT TRUFFLES from Santa Florentina convent, PEAR SWEETS IN SYRUP by Discalced Carmelite nuns or FLORES DE MIEL (honey-drenched �ower-shaped pastries) from Santa Inés convent.

OLIVE OIL is another important ingredient in Écija's recipes, as the town has been producing it since Roman times.

FESTIVALS AND TRADITIONSCAMINOS OF TRADITION

Much of Écija's culture is closely linked to FLAMENCO, with many singers, guitarists, dancers and poets hailing from the town. One of Andalusia's most important �amenco festivals has been held in Écija for more than 35 years: La Noche Flamenca Ecijana, with participation from many famous �amenco singers.

The town also boasts a large number of �amenco social clubs, locally known as peñas: Teresa León female �amenco club, David Serrano �amenco club, Antonio Mairena �amenco club, La Plazuela �amenco club and the world's �rst bull�ghting and �amenco cultural association, Peña del Peña. Écija is also represented by the award-winning �amencologist, Manuel Martín Martín and Manuel Malbaceda, an extraordinary poet, whose lyrics are sung by many acclaimed �amenco singers.

ARTS & CRAFTSCAMINOS OF AUTHENTICITY

Écija is fortunate to possess a rich arts and crafts tradition, with a multitude of products, ranging from ceramics to delicate goldwork embroidery. Visitors can explore the town's workshops and discover CERAMICS, CARPENTRY, IRONMONGERY, BOOKBINDING AND LEATHERWORK created by meticulous craftspeople.

Many artisans produce items related to Easter Week, including IMAGE MAKERS AND RESTORERS, SCULPTORS, EMBROIDERERS AND CARPENTERS.

NATURE AND LANDSCAPESCAMINOS OF NATURE

THE SEVILLE COUNTRYSIDE NATURE TRAIL takes the same route as the stretch of the Marchena-Valchillón railway line that once ran through the town of Écija.

Écija is famous for its horses, and is known as “THE TOWN OF HORSES”. The exceptional conditions o�ered by the town's countryside make it one of the most horse-centric places in Spain. It is the cradle of stud farms that breed renowned pure Spanish, purebred Arabian and Anglo-Arabian horses, which have taken Écija's name around the globe. There are many companies that o�er horse shows, trips to stud farms and horseback riding.

There are also a number of ADVENTURE TOURISM companies that o�er paragliding, rafting, and canoeing along the river Genil, as well as an adventure park where visitors can have a try at archery, climbing, and zip-wire.

Écija was founded in around the 8th century BC during the Tartessian civilisation. However, it was under Roman domination that it reached its greatest period of splendour when the 'Augusta Firma Astigi Colony' was established in 14 BC. This colony consisted of a large town with paved streets and a bridge over which the Vía Augusta crossed the river Genil.

Even after the Empire had fallen, Écija continued being an important cultural and religious centre during the Visigoth and Moorish eras. The fertility and richness of the land were noteworthy attributes and led to the coining of the nickname “Madînat al-qutn” or town of cotton.

In 1240, the town was conquered by Ferdinand III and the land shared out among Castilian settlers, many of which were noblemen, military orders and the Church. During the 18th century, known as “Écija's golden age”, the town witnessed the construction of many civil buildings and churches. Its historic quarter is exemplary of Andalusia's Baroque art, which together with its wealth of movables and extensive archives, lends the town an exceptional historic heritage.

La fundación de Écija se sitúa hacia el siglo VIII a.C. en la civilización tartésica, sin embargo, conoció su mayor etapa de esplendor durante la dominación romana cuando se funda en el año 14 a. C. la ‘Colonia Augusta Firma Astigi’, una gran ciudad de calles pavimentadas junto a un puente por el que la Vía Augusta cruzaba el Genil.

A la caída del Imperio, la ciudad siguió siendo un impor-tante foco cultural y religioso en época visigoda e islámica destacando la fertilidad y riqueza de su territo-rio y llegando a acuñar el sobrenombre de Madînat al-qutn (La ciudad del algodón).

En 1240 fue conquistada por Fernando III y repartida entre pobladores castellanos, muchos de ellos nobles, las órdenes militares y la Iglesia. Todo el siglo XVIII, ‘El siglo de oro ecijano’, vive un esplendor de construcciones civiles e iglesias siendo su casco histórico una importante muestra del arte barroco andaluz, lo que junto a sus ricos bienes muebles y a los amplios archivos documentales le con�ere un patrimonio histórico excepcional.

La IGLESIA DE SANTA MARÍA, construida en la transición del estilo barroco al neoclásico y con una importante colección arqueológica; LA IGLESIA DE ‘LOS DESCALZOS’, imponente joya del barroco andaluz, y la IGLESIA DE SAN JUAN, cuya torre barroca es una de las más emblemáticas del conjunto astigitano.

GASTRONOMÍACAMINOS DE LOS SENTIDOS

La gastronomía de Écija es un re�ejo de su historia. Utilizando los ingredientes que produce la fértil huerta astigitana, entre sus platos podemos destacar el GAZPACHO ECIJANO, EL SALMOREJO, LAS ESPINACAS LABRADAS o la ‘SOPA DE GATO’, una variante de la sopa de ajo a la que se le añade pimientos y tomates. Otros platos típicos son el RABO DE TORO, LA CAZUELA DE ESPÁRRAGOS TRIGUEROS o LOS FLAMENQUINES. Y, por supuesto, los desayunos con los tradicionales MOLLETES untados de ‘manteca colorá’ (manteca de cerdo de color anaranjado).

Entre la extensa y variada repostería ecijana, citar las famosas YEMAS ‘EL ECIJANO’, LAS TORTAS DE MANTECA o la más exquisita repostería elaborada en los obradores conventuales, sobresaliendo los ‘BIZCO-CHOS MARROQUÍES’ y LAS TRUFAS DE AVELLANAS de las Madres Dominicas de Santa Florentina, los DULCES DE PERA EN ALMÍBAR de las Carmelitas Descalzas o las FLORES DE MIEL del Real Convento de Santa Inés.

El ACEITE DE OLIVA VIRGEN EXTRA es otro elemento signi�cativo de la gastronomía astigitana.

FIESTAS Y TRADICIÓNESCAMINOS DE LA TRADICIÓN

La cultura en Écija está estrechamente vinculada el FLAMENCO, con relevantes aportaciones artísticas y musicales en el cante, el toque, el baile y la poesía. Cuenta con uno de los festivales más importantes de Andalucía, La Noche Flamenca Ecijana, que ha celebrado 36 edicio-nes y en el que han participado numerosas �guras del cante �amenco.

Además, cuenta con numerosas peñas �amencas como: Peña Flamenca Femenina Teresa León, Peña Flamenca David Serrano, Peña Flamenca Antonio Mairena, Peña Flamenca La Plazuela y con la primera peña a nivel mundial Tauro-Flamenca, Peña del Peña. Écija cuenta además con otras aportaciones como son las del �amencó-logo ecijano, Manuel Martín Martín, premio nacional de �amencolo-gía. Manuel Malbaceda, poeta sublime del que adoptan sus letras, importantes �guras del cante �amenco.

ARTESANÍACAMINOS DE LO AUTÉNTICO

Una de las mayores riquezas de Écija es su artesanía, con multitud de manifestaciones que van desde la cerámica popular hasta los �nos bordados en oro. El visitante que desee conocer la artesanía típica de Écija, encontrará objetos de CERÁMICA, DE EBANISTERÍA, DE FORJA, ENCUADERNACIÓN ARTÍSTICA y cómo no de GUARNICIONERÍA, elabora-dos en talleres en los que se mima cada detalle.

Además, vinculados con su Semana Grande, cuenta también con destacados IMAGINEROS-RESTAURADORES, ESCULTORES, TALLERES DE BORDADOS Y DE MADERA.

NATURALEZA Y PAISAJESCAMINOS DE LA NATURALEZA

EL CAMINO NATURAL DE LA CAMPIÑA SEVILLANA discurre sobre el antiguo trazado ferroviario de Marchena a Valchillón en su trayecto dentro del término municipal de Écija.

Écija es conocida como ‘CIUDAD DEL CABALLO’. Las excepcionales condiciones de los campos de Écija convierten a la ciudad en uno de los principales centros ecuestres del país, cuna de ganaderías de caballos de pura raza española, pura sangre árabe y anglo árabe, existe en la localidad una importante oferta de empresas que organizan espectácu-los ecuestres, visitas a ganaderías y rutas a caballo.

En cuanto a TURISMO ACTIVO, Écija cuenta también con empresas que ofrecen vuelos en parapente, rafting, rutas en piragua y balsas por el Río Genil, además del Parque Multiaventura Ocio y Salud para practicar tiro con arco, escalada o tirolina.

RELIGIOSIDADCAMINOS DE EMOCIÓN

Como no podía ser de otra manera, la SEMANA SANTA de Écija destaca por su barroquismo y la belleza de sus pasos e imágenes cuyas tallas, realizadas por importantes imagineros como Juan de Mesa, Montes de Oca o Gaspar de Águila, entre otros, cuentan con siglos de historia. En ella, hace estación de penitencia trece Herman-dades más una Agrupación Parroquial.

Originada a �nales del siglo XV y por ello heredera de una devoción de siglos, algunos de sus pasos destacan por conservar en distinta medida el estilo llamado ‘ecijano’, que en contraposición al estilo sevillano, son portados a hombros por hombres vestidos con túnicas y capillos (cubrerrostro). Las imágenes se colocan sobre altas peanas o canastillas de proporciones cuadradas, a diferencia de las canasti-llas actuales que son rectangulares, y se iluminan con candelabros de guardabrisas. Llamando poderosamente la atención la verticalidad de los conjuntos. Los palacios, las casas señoriales y la belleza de su casco histórico sirven de marco perfecto para el fervor con el que los vecinos viven la �esta.

PATRIMONIOCAMINOS DE CULTURA

En Écija destacan PALACIOS como el de PEÑAFLOR (XVI-XVIII) con una imponente fachada con pinturas al fresco; el PALACIO DE BENAMEJÍ, sede del MUSEO HISTÓRICO MUNICIPAL, que expone importantes piezas arqueológicas como la Amazona herida y mosaicos romanos; el de VALDEHERMOSO, con portada plateresca del s. XVI; el de SANTAELLA  y el MUSEO CASA-PALACIO DE PALMA, con magní�cos artesonados de lacería mudéjar y mobiliario del siglo XIX.

En cuanto a arquitectura religiosa, resaltar la IGLESIA DE SANTIAGO, construcción gótico-mudéjar del s. XV o la IGLESIA MAYOR DE SANTA CRUZ. Otro templo relevante es la IGLESIA DE LA CONCEPCIÓN -‘EL HOSPITALITO’- con un valioso artesonado de lacería mudéjar del s. XVI.
