Short History

Pre- Independence: Several years ago, in 1938, a group of engineers left a well-known construction

organization in Bombay and formed the nucleus of Sewri Engineering. This group occupied key

positions and represented the cream of engineering talent in that firm. Four of these engineers

were Europeans and two were Indians. Their aim was to combine high technical services with

absolute reliability. Such an aim represented a revolution by highly talented technicians. With the

termination of the Second World War, the young organization had to face internal forces of

turbulence. This storm was weathered successfully; but the civil and mechanical wings

of the organisation parted company and the construction organization was

transformed into Sewri Engineering Construction Company as a partnership firm.

During the next fifteen years it grew from strength to strength. It occupied a

significant place then in the construction industry in India, with a high reputation for

reliability of its technical service and quality of work.

Post- Independence: It was incorporated as a Limited company in 1951 by the founder

members Mr. Robert Francey, Mr. C.V. Deshpande and Mr. P. Tongaonkar. This

company took over the business of the then partnership firm.

Nearly five decades later, a group of engineers and architects once again joined hands,

as if to relive the history to take over the business in 2006. After the change of management in

2006, company is growing at a rapid pace at nearly 100% since.

Company has received its ISO9001:2000 certification for “Providing Civil Engineering Contract

Services to customers.” The Company is registered as Class I Contractors with Government of

Maharashtra Public Works Department. The major thrust of its Construction activity has been in

Power Stations, Bridges, Aqueducts, Irrigation Structures, Foundation Engineering, apart from its

involvement in Pump Houses, Cooling Towers, Water Treatment Plants, Heavy Machine

Foundation, Factory Buildings, Industrial Buildings and Hangars. The organization has successfully

completed various Designs

and Construction projects as well as pure Design Consultancy assignments which can be seen from

the attached list of works. Keeping in mind vast experience in varied types of Civil Engineering

works the expertise built up by the company over the years, it is confident of tackling any project.

Nepa Mills Ltd. at Nepanagar in Madhya Pradesh. The work involved construction of various foundations, civil structures in a running factory with considerable space

constraint. The job required the following operations. 1. Construction of foundations and a power house building including T.G. Foundations and Boiler and other

foundations for 12 M.W. captive power plant. 2.A building for the a)Switch gear and compressor. b)Ground building with a number of R.C.C. silos and a control room. 3.A Multi- storied Brown stock washer building. 4.Calcium Hypo chloride plant, and a Cold soda plant. 5.Modifications to the paper machine foundation along with other allied structures for an increase in the capacity of the existing paper making machine. The work had to be carried out in congested areas in a running plant and with minimum shut down time to minimize the loss of production. 29. CLIENT : Chief Engineer, P.W.D., Dhule (North) Division, Shahada, Distt. Dhule. WORK : Construction of Bridge across Tapi River PERIOD OF COMPLETION : April 1980 to December 1982 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT: The bridge was constructed using open foundations with solid P.C.C. piers of 17 meters height. The deck was 7.5 meter wide and consisted of 40 spans of 15 meters each with solid slab construction. The total bridge length was 600 meters. Construction was completed one year before the scheduled date with the help of 8 Nos. rolling trusses, being slipped through the gaps left in each of the piers thereby facilitating construction of the superstructure through the monsoon season. The neglected weather and conditions obtaining in the river both of which therefore, were no hindrance to the progress of the work.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECTS: The above four string of projects were executed by us for M/s. BHEL, Bhopal.

a) The Ultra High Voltage Laboratory was a unique structure of its kind in Asia, involving a number of sub laboratories attached to the main testing hall having dimensions 40 m by 40 m and 40 high. Since one end of the laboratory was used for high voltage transformer testing, the floor was required to be constructed in M400 concrete with an epoxy surface. Also, an isolated staircase having a tower like structure of 50 meters height was required to be constructed.

b) The Coils and Insulation block consisted of a huge shed with 5 bays each 18 m wide and 240 m long. The main feature of the structure was that it had to have positive air pressure and hence the roof was comprised of precast concrete panels instead of the usual A.C/G.I. Sheets associated with Industrial Buildings. The structure was constructed using a combination of R.C.C. and Structural Steel.

c) Block VI was an extension of an existing building and hence was a combination of R.C.C. and Structural Steel and was a normal industrial building.

d) The Traction block is, a separate industrial structure, was especially designed for manufacturing of traction motors. This was again an industrial structure being a combination of both R.C.C. and Structural Steel work.

General: All the above structures were designed and constructed by us for M/s. BHEL to suit their particular needs and design requirements. The planning and design of the structures was evolved jointly with the client M/s. BHEL, and represent a unique requirement of a Heavy Electrical Engineering Industry. 34.CLIENT:The Executive Engineer, PWD Ahmednagar.
