SF CARD – San Francisco Community Agencies Responding to Disaster
• Providing disaster services to nonprofits and faith-based organizations
Recipient of the 2011 BRMA Award for Excellence in Contingency Planning
Dependencies– Since we are a training agency, we don’t have a
large dependency on supplies or vendors. – Our major operational dependency is related to
accurate and timely information from trusted sources in an emergency.
– Our major dependencies for sustainability are funding related.
– Our next major dependency is our donated office space and equipment.
Interdependencies– San Francisco Interfaith Council– American Red Cross Bay Area– Regional intermediary agencies (CADRE, THRIVE, CARD)– Local Public Sector (San Francisco Dept. of Emergency
Management HSA, DPH, Mayor’s Office on Disabilities, NEN, etc.)
– State Agencies (California Volunteers; CalEMA)– Federal Agencies (FEMA Region IX; DHS Center for Faith-
Based & Neighborhood Partnerships)– Private Sector (BOMA, BRMA)
Addressing Regional Interdependencies Challenges
• Joined organizations such as: – BACSPP (Bay Area Cross Sector Partners in
Preparedness)– California Resiliency Alliance– Bay Area Center for Regional Disaster Resilience– Working with private sector businesses
throughout the Bay Area– Establishing contacts with Bay Area public sector
disaster managers
Addressing the Priority Gaps
• Priority gaps related to gaining information AND mitigating potential interdependencies-related impacts affecting disaster recovery.– Narrowing our scope of information gathering to
the most trusted sources– Assessing the accuracy and relevancy of the
information– Avoiding the potential for information overload
Actions to Address the Gaps
• Creating stronger cross-sector relationships
• Accessing opportunities for exchanging information with these partners in an emergency
• Proactive use of the various information-sharing platforms (Interagency Chatter)
