CASE STUDY #102

SF-Rima™ permeable pavement is an innovative and environmental system designed to reduce or eliminate storm water runoff, decrease flooding and relieve sewer systems. They are also ideal as a turf pavement, which allows for irrigation and cooling of surfaces. SF-Rima™ permeable pavement is made under extreme pressure and high-frequency vibration and with their interlocking joints, they can support heavy vehicular loads. SF-Rima™ permeable pavement is perfect for driveways, parking lots, crosswalks, street medians, industrial plants, factory streets and bridge underpasses.

CASE STUDY #102

The SF-Rima™ Permeable Pavement used for the Peter Lougheed project was manufactured at the Expocrete plant located in Balzac, Alberta and used the new Kolorscapes process that places the color in the top 10% of the paving stone. This process creates a more vibrant color and a smoother surface finish. This Kolorscapes process also allowed for white cement to be used to achieve the SRI (Solar Reflective Index) rating. The white paving stones used account for approximately 90% of the entire surface area and will help reduce the heat island effect that regular asphalt surfaces would have caused. The interlock of the SF-Rima™ Permeable Pavement provides load stability and withstands heavier loads from garbage trucks, delivery trucks and maintenance vehicles.

SF-Rima™ Permeable Pavement is ideal for climates that experience chinnook conditions throughout the winter. Warm temperatures allow for snow to melt and permeate between the joints to the sub-layers. This process eliminates water from pooling and freezing when temperatures drop.

The expansion and new wing of the Peter Lougheed Hospital includes a roadway for Ambulance use that accounts for approximately 1,600 square meters with an additional 500 square meters for parking. The SF-Rima™ Permeable Pavement was chosen for these areas to help eliminate storm water runoff from the roadway and help contribute in the process of achieving LEED credits for water management. The SF-Rima™ Permeable Pavement provides a durable roadway surface that is attractive, low maintenance and functional. Winter snow removal is no different than any other roadway surface. Sand and deicing products are not used in order to prevent clogging of the joints. The small aggregate that is used in between the joints is used to provide traction and the excess is then swept clean in spring.
