What are Middens? “Shell  middens  are  the  remains  of  meals  collected  by  Aboriginal  people  from both the open-coast, near inland waters and sheltered estuarine environments. They contain substantial deposits of shellfish and other marine species.” Source: Dept Primary Industries: http://www.dpi.vic.gov.au/fisheries/aboriginal-fishing Molluscs (shellfish) Did you know that the reefs of Sandringham beaches are inhabited by many shell fish, marine life mussels and abalone? It is not uncommon that we witness poachers gathering shell fish from the shallow reefs (less than 2 metres depth). Did you know this is illegal? If you see any poachers please report them to the police by phoning 000 immediately. If you have a phone and safe to do so, snap a photo of them too in action!

Recreational Abalone Open Days for Central Victorian Waters There is a permanent closed season on the take of abalone from central Victorian waters, except for 60 nominated open days of the year. You can take abalone only between sunrise and sunset and must not fish for abalone in the intertidal zone (waters less than 2m deep). Molluscs such as abalone, snails, limpets and periwinkles are protected in the intertidal zone. Source: Dept Primary Industries: http://www.dpi.vic.gov.au/fisheries/recreational-fishing/catch-limits-and-closed-seasons/molluscs-and-other-invertebrates/abalone-all-species Our Sandringham Foreshore is full of surprises!!! This Tiger snake was spotted by Murray Thompson MP and Tiffany both local Sandringham residents near the Sandringham Yacht club at the revetment wall. They both came to the rescue and after several phone calls organised a snake catcher who relocated the snake to a native reserve at another suburb! Not saying which one though! We postulate that it was washed down the Yarra River, which is known to have an abundance of tiger snakes, with all the recent heavy rains.

Luckily this is a rare occurrence!

Black Rock beach, Half Moon Bay The geomorphology of the Port Phillip Bay coasts is well documented by coastal expert and geomorphologist  Dr  Eric  Bird  titled  “CHANGES  ON  THE  COASTLINE  OF  PORT  PHILLIP  BAY”  published  by DSE. This e-book is excellent and freely available for download at: www.oem.vic.au/Assets/986/1/ChangesonthecoastlineofPPBBookforWeb2011.PDF SFA greatly value the support and good work by Murray Thompson Sandringham MP who is committed and dedicated to issues that concern our local community.

The  “red  dirt”  destined  for  Half  Moon  Bay  beach  but  ordered  to  be  taken  away  by  Environment  Minister Ryan Smith who acted promptly following concerns raised by our local community on the quality of sand. Bayside City Council update SFA meet with senior members of Bayside Council on a regular basis to raise any concerns with our local beaches and address areas that require attention. These include issues with storm water drain pipes, addressing the poor state of vegetation, areas of coastal erosion, cliff collapse, beach cleaning, concerns with weeds, any unnecessary fencing, and fencing where required for safety issues. We value the relationship we have developed with Council and also value the local residents who put a tremendous amount of effort in looking after our beaches and are freely volunteering their time regularly to keep our beaches and cliffs clean, pulling out weeds, looking after infrastructure and reporting their concerns with SFA and Council. APPS to help Council locate problems on our beaches, parks and streets: There are two phone applications that allow people to report to their local council on issues such as damage, litter, road obstructions, vandalism, potholes, fallen trees, abandoned trolleys and graffiti. The apps are Snap Send Solve and NeatStreets. Snap Send Solve

Snap Send Solve is a free app for an iPhone or Android device that lets you report issues and provide feedback to your local council in under 30 seconds Australia wide. It determines which is your

council  using  your  smartphone’s  GPS  location.  Once  your  GPS  location  has  been  determined,  all  relevant council details, including contact information, location and email contact is sent back to your phone. All reports from Snap Send Solve are sent from the app using your email address so that the council can communicate directly with you to fix the issue. Get the Snap Send Solve app from iTunes or click on the following link: www.outware.com.au/our-apps/snap-send-solve

NeatStreets NeatStreets is another is a freely downloadable app which is available for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry platform based phones. It is a service for people to use their mobile phones to report on community issues to local councils, Road Authorities, and Government Departments. You report issues that concern you and the app manages them and gets them resolved anywhere across Australia and New Zealand. You take a photo, select a category, type a message, and then press the send button.

The report and its location is received within seconds. Your report is automatically forwarded to the appropriate authority based on your GPS location. In this app, you are completely anonymous. The app uses the mobile UDID to identify your handset, but  the  UDID  does  not  provide  any  information  about  you.  All  reports  are  kept  on  your  phone’s  NeatStreets History view. Every time you view them, their current status will be reported back to you. In this way you can monitor how your report has progressed until it is closed. Get the NeatStreets app from the iTunes and Google Android Market or click on the following link: http://www.neatstreets.com.au/ Gift idea for Christmas Do you love sailing and yachts? Profile of a Sandringham resident Adrienne Hamilton-Smith Public officer and committee member of the SFA

Adrienne lives almost on the Sandringham beach opposite Royal Avenue and spends some time on most days either running or walking along the beach with her dog, Rally. Apart from a (too long!) 15 year stint living in the Kew/Surrey Hills area, she has always lived in Bayside. She loves the beach life, swimming, occasional cycling to Williamstown along the bike track with friends, and sailing in the bay with her partner, Terry.

Adrienne’s  dog  Rally  amongst  the  Sandringham  beach  cliffs

Adrienne lectured for 10 years in the University system in Accounting Information Systems then worked for 10 years in the training department of a multi-national software corporation, training the corporation’s  customers  and  managing  the  corporation’s  Asia  Pacific  internal  training. Having had many opportunities to travel in her working life, Adrienne is now enjoying a busy life in retirement doing such things as travelling just for the enjoyment of seeing different places and cultures, snow skiing in Canada, sailing in the Aegean Sea and boating in the Whitsundays. Adrienne met Vicki Karalis frequently on the beach while they were both walking their dogs, and talking about local Bayside issues, Adrienne joined as a member of the Sandringham Foreshore Association (SFA). At a meeting with Bayside councillors recently, Adrienne and Vicki are very encouraged to see that council is willing to listen to and act on the concerns of local residents, particularly with respect to sand management, removal of debris from the beach area, attending to the effects of vandalism and trying to achieve a balance between the differing and sometimes opposing opinions associated with beachside foliage, parking facilities and beach views. Adrienne is passionate about protecting the way of life we currently enjoy, both for ourselves and for future generations, against the effects of climate change, and pushing strongly for our suburb live up to its name of Bayside: beautiful sandy beaches and clean sea water. Water Safety Vietnam Did you know that 10 Children Drown in Vietnam Every Day!

Water Safety Vietnam Ltd. is a not for profit organisation. Water Safety Vietnam was formed when a group of experienced swimming and water safety personnel became aware of the extremely high death by drowning rate in Asia. In  Asia  ‘An  estimated  350,000  children  die  each  year- a rate of some 20 times higher than in developed counties. Of  these  350,000  children,  almost  half  are  aged  between  one  and  four.’    (Ref.  AusAID website Feb 2010) For Vietnam, this figure is estimated to be in excess of 10 children per day. Drowning is the leading cause of injury related death among children over the age of one. (Ref. Vietnam Ministry of Health).
