SFC Teaching Night:
Pentecost: The Holy Spirit
“Would it have been better for you to have lived in the days of our blessed Lord?”
“Have you missed much by not being a contemporary of the incarnate life of God who walked this earth?”
“Did we lose something?” “Is the twentieth century at a disadvantage
being so far removed from Him?”
Questions?
Advantage or Disadvantage?
John 16:7
“But I tell you the truth:It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.”
it was better for Him that He go…
We have lost His corporal presence but the spiritual presence has taken its place.
Do not think that if you had lived in the time of our blessed Lord that it would have been any easier to have believed in His divinity then than it would be
to believe in the divinity of His Church now.
“The Apostles; they did not understand the meaning of His death until the Holy Spirit
came upon them at Pentecost.”
we are at a great advantage…
ACTS 2:1-41
Fifty days after the Resurrection at Pentecost the glorified Jesus Christ poured out the Spirit in abundance and revealed him as a divine Person so that the Holy Trinity was fully manifest.
The mission of Christ and of the Spirit became the mission of the Church which is sent to proclaim and spread the mystery of the communion of the Holy Trinity.
Mary and 12 disciples were present at Pentecost
What happened at Pentecost?
The Cenacle on Mount Zion, claimed to be the location of the Last Supper and Pentecost.
Bargil Pixner claims the original Church of the Apostles is located under the current structure.
Let’s begin…
#1 The Holy Spirit reveals the Son of God, Christ.
Just as the Son revealed the Father, our Lord said He would send the Holy Spirit to reveal the Son.(John 3:16), Philip said to Jesus, “Show us the Father.”
4 Lessons about The Holy Spirit

HolySpirit
John 16:13-15
“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes,he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.”
#1 The Holy Spirit reveals Christ
The great role of the Holy Spirit is to stand behind the scenes to make Christ more real. Hence, the Apostles did not understand the Crucifixion until after Pentecost.
St. Paul goes so far as to say no one can call Jesus “Lord,” except by the Spirit.
If you believe in the divinity of Christ by this time, it is through the Holy Spirit you believe.
#1 The Holy Spirit reveals Christ
The Holy Spirit witnesses not to Himself, but to the Son. Those who have the Spirit understand Christ.
Why do they not know Him? Why do they not have the Spirit? Because they
have not obeyed the law of God. Our Lord said, If you love Me, keep My
Commandments. Then the Holy Spirit will manifest Himself to us.
#1 The Holy Spirit reveals Christ
Just as the artist stays outside of the canvas, so the Holy Spirit is staying outside the Christ, whom He reveals.
Engineers understand engineers; brokers understand brokers; and students of the same college understand each other. They all have the same spirit. They have both the natural and supernatural spirit of Christ. How do we understand Christ?
We must have the spirit of Christ.
#2 The purpose of the Holy Spirit as an artist
#3 The Holy Spirit in relationshipto our understanding of sin.
The Holy Spirit would convict us of sin,
“The Spirit will come and it will be for Him to prove the world wrong about sin. They have not found belief in Me.” – John 15:25-27
When do we come to a real understandingof sin? Our Lord says here, through the Holy Spirit.
#3 The Holy Spirit in relationshipto our understanding of sin.
No one really grasps the evil of sin if he thinks it is just the breaking of a law. When we have the Spirit of Christ we understand sin is doing harm to one we love.
The Holy Spirit reveals to us that sin is the refusal to accept that deliverance purchased by Christ.
Every sinner who has the spirit of Christ always thinks of sin in relationship to the Crucifixion.
#3 The Holy Spirit in relationshipto our understanding of sin.
It is the Spirit that tells us we are breaking off arelationship with love. St. Paul tells us as we sin we crucify Christ anew in our hearts.
The life of a true Christian is not so muchconcerned with the avoidance of sin; rather, it is an attempt to reproduce in ourselves the life of Christ.
#4 The Holy Spirit in relationshipto the body.
1 Corinthians 6:1919 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;
How does our body become the temple of God? It is made holy by the indwelling of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in our soul.
John 2:1919 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”
#4 The Holy Spirit in relationshipto the body.
Our Lord has a double glory: one, with theFather, for He is glorified at the right hand, and He is glorified in us.
He said, The Holy Spirit shall glorify Me.The Holy Spirit glorifies Him in us by making us witnesses to Christ, declaring Him in our mind and in our actions.
1. He cleanses us from our sins. 2. The Holy Spirit enlightens the intellect, since all
that we know, we know through the Holy Ghost.3. He assists us and, to a certain extent, compels
us to keep the commandments. No one can keep the commandments unless he loves God.
4. He strengthens in us the hope of eternal life, because He is the pledge to us of this our destiny.
5. He counsels us when we are in doubt, and teaches us what is the will of God.
