ffiomreffidffi@Mlf-t has been an honour and privilege for me

-llto have served as the President of theAlipur Muslim Association for the last 2years.

Although I have served our Association in

various capacities since 1995, it is onlywhen one takes the helm of the Associationas President that one fully appreciates thenature and importance of its activities andthe extent of the services which ourAssociation renders to the people of Alipurdescent in particular and to the MuslimUmmah in general.

Our Association is controlled by the Councilof Management and the day to day activitiesare vested in the hands of the Executive andthe Trustees. All members deal with andcontribute in some manner to the manyfacets of its functions.

I have, however, largely been a figureheadduring my term of office. This was solely dueto the sustained support andencouragement which I received from a

handful of members. These members wereunfailing in executing key responsibilitiesentrusted to them and due recognition oftheir efforts must be recorded andacknowledged.

It is remarkable that we have amongst ourmidst members who freely give up their timeand resources to ensure that ourAssociation acquits itself of its duties andfunctions.

The dedication and commitment of thesemembers made me, as I indicated earlier, largely a figurehead.

I refer in particular to Aboobaker Loonat,Mohamed lsmail Dajee, Abdul RehmanDajee, Goolam Nabi Ebrahim Akoodie,Mohamed Y Mayet and the members of thebursary and welfare committees. Theydeserve special recognition for the immensecontribution made by them.

I am reminded of an Ahadith of our NabiMuhammad (SAW) who said something tothe effect thal "if man cannot thank man, then man will never be able to thank hiscreator". I am and will always be eternallyindebted to them.

It is my humble view, and I say this withutmost conviction, that all Alipurians, andindeed the ummah in general, can be justlyproud of these members who never flinchedin the face of adversity and faced whatevertasks entrusted to them with strong will. They have rendered unflinching service toour Association and to our people and theyare, and they will remain, an inspiration tome. I was indeed lucky enough to have hadan opportunity of leading the Associationwith people of such dedication andcommitment.

I am at pains to emphasize that this is not acase of "patting each other on the back" orof "thanking each other". Rather, it is seeingreality and acknowledging their hard work. lthas been a humbling and gratifyingexperience for me to have been entrusted tolead an organization with members of thiscaliber. All of them, jointly and individually, gave true meaning to the general clich6 of "ltis nof what I can get out of the Association, but rather what I can give to theAssociation".

ln closing, I would like to mention that it hasbeen an honour and privilege for me toserve as your President for the last 2 years.

Our Association is in good hands and will,lnsha-Allah, only go from strength tostrength in its endeavour to serye ourpeople. Aameen.

SMS SERVICE

Our SMS communication has had an impact onour community and our database is standing atalmost 1200 and still growing at a very fast pace.I would like to place on record my sincereapologies for the hitches that we experiencedrecently - SMS not reaching everybody on thelist or a delay in receiving same. This was, unfortunately, caused by our service provider. However, we are in talks with them so as toovercome this problem. Although the AMA hastermed this service as free, we would appreciateyou forwarding some monetary contributiontowards sustaining this service.

ALIPUR WEBSITE

Surf the website - wvwv.alipur.co.za. Due to lackof interest by the person who set up the website,we found ourselves not updating the site on aregular basis. Also, we urge you, the Alipurcommunity at large, to forward to us informationand ideas you would like to see on the website.

BURSARY LOANS

Due to the ever increasing costs of tertiaryeducation and the number of applicants, the totalrequests for bursaries have increasedtremendously. Because we have limited Lillahfunds and the ever increasing bursary loansoutstanding, we are forced to restrict ourallocations to 50% of studying fees per student.Over the 2 year period we allocated a total ofR296 846,00 in bursary loans. ln fact, we werefaced with a huge shortfall and had to obtain aloan from Styleprops 156 (PTY) Limited just sothat we do not refuse any of the applicants. Therefore, we can safely say that all applicantsthat have complied fully were granted loans.

WMre@WELFARE

Our welfare distributions have increased over theyears. The Association makes out 30 cheques ofR1 250,00 monthly which of late has beenincreased to R1 750,00. This is very efficientlycarried out by one person and for some reasonshe prefers not to be highlighted for her nobleefforts. But I urge you to remember her in yourduas. Over and above this, we have alsosupported the following organizations to the tuneof R1 10 000,00 Madressa Zia-ul-Badr,Madressa Tulbenaat, Johannesburg MuslimSchool, lkhwana lslamiya, Muslim Hands, AlTauheed, Gift of the Givers and FordsburgMuslim Youth Organisation.

THE JUMMA MASJID IN ALIPUR, INDIA

AN ANECDOTE ON THEHISTORY OF ALIPUR

There was a pious person (Wali) named ALI whomigrated to this part of the world many centuriesago. His origin is not known but he is believed tobe from Prophetic ancestry, although this cannotbe independently verified. The land surroundingthis village was barren and open and, largelyuninhabited. He found lush green land here anddecided to live on a high place, where, weunderstand, the Jumma Masjid is presentlylocated.

Gradually, people began to gather at this place, which as yet had no name, to seek spiritualguidance. Whenever people visited Ali's placethey would say "Ali net a Jawana" or "Ali waragaam ma jawana". The peoPle of thesurrounding villages spoke mostly Gujarati and, later, it was common to say "Ali-por jawana".

As the people started dwelling around this Walior Buzhrukh, the place where he had his smalltent was converted into a prayer area and laterbecame a Masjid. That is how the present dayJumma Masjid came into existence.

It was assumed that the rest of the Buzhrukh'sclan followed him and they migrated to this lushgreen area of south Gujarat. They built houseswhere Matwadia Faria and Mulla Wad nowstand, which is near the Present dayJumma Masjid. Because their mother tongue wasUrdu / Persian, they always called it Ali-pur.

With an increasing population of Vorhas movingto this part of the world, they began to buildtheir houses near the Masjid and, soon, a newsettlement sprung up and they called their villageALI-POR.

It is also believed that many families who settledthere converted to lslam due to this piousBuzhrukh named Ali and other Buzhrukhs likeAdhar Peer Bawa and his 18 brothers. Alipore isindebted to these great people who hadpreached humility, peace and the true words ofAlmighty Allah. Although in those days most ofthe people in the village were uneducated, theyhad innocent minds, very good faith and innerstrength. lt is no wonder that Alipor is

surrounded by the graves of so many Buzhrukhsand Walis.

Please note that this story has not beenindependentlY verified.

Page 12: #s$@@#ffiH - Alipore SAaliporesa.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/2009... · Loonat reported that Styleprops monthly income was R25 000,00 and the expenses were approximately R3 000,00.

BURSARIES

The Alipur Muslim Association grants bursary loans to needy students to enable them to obtain tertiary education.Alhamdulillah, many students who benefited from this scheme have graduated and are practising in theirrespective professions.

We are proud that this bursary scheme has.produced doctors, accountants, lawyers, teachers and many otherprofessionals. lt has been noted that new applicanis are embarking upon studies in fields which were previouslyclosed to them. lt is our stated intention, fiinds permitting, to assist as mahy students as possible so that ourchildren may enter a wide spectrum of professions. ln this way, they will benefit society and uplift the ummah.

However, the bursary loans are repayable. lt is a condition of such bursary loans that it be repaid as soon as thestudent graduates and is gainfully employed.

Alhamdulillah, many students have repaid their loans and we thank them for this. ln this way, others may alsobenefit and have an opportunity to further their studies.

Sadly, the majority of students who have benefited from this scheme, and who have already qualified and aregainfully employed, have not made any repayment. We urge these students to contact us so that repaymentarrangements may be made and agreed upon.

Please note that the schedule set forth above is obtained from our records. Certain students may have madepayment directly into our Bank account without informing us and without reflecting any reference in respect ofsuch payment. We call upon any student who may be affected in this regard to let us have proof of payment sothat our records may be amended. Should payment be made directly into our Bank account, then the onus is onthe student to clearly reflect the account number and to inform us of such payment.

AFTER RAMADAANby Hazrat Moulana Yunus Patel (daamat barakutuhum)

The Holy month of Ramadaan came like seasonal rain and passed by. This raindid not water the plants and crops -it showered upon the hearts of believers. Itis sad, but true, that the hearts of the majority of Muslims are stricken withspiritual drought and spiritual decadence. It is a drought caused by excessiveindulgence in un-Islamic activities, immoral behaviour, unjust actions, unfairdealings etc. Drought caused by lack of rain destroys crops -drought caused bylack of piety, lack of fear of Allah and lack of Allah consciousness destroys theSPIRITUALITY of the heart.

Ramadaan's spiritual rains brought to life the Masaajid and other prayer places.Ramadaan had fanned the dying spark of charity. Ramadaan had awakened thedying spirit of tolerance, patience and sympathy for the less fortunate.

Now that we come to the end of Ramadaan the big question is what to do? Didwe go through all the spiritual exercises in Ramadaan in order that we may havethe freedom to indulge, on Eid day, in all types of immoral, shameless andindecent amusement? Did we restrain ourselves from halaal food, drinks andother pleasures from dawn to sunset throughout Ramadaan, so that we mayreturn with renewed vigour to gambling, drinking, adultery and fornication? Willthe spirit of tolerance, mercy/ patience, charity and sympathy be still evident orwill these noble qualities be shelved until the dawn of the next Ramadaan?

Will the Masajids which were filled on most nights in Ramadaan remain the sameor will they become empty wondering where the faithful have gone? Ourlifetsyles after Ramadaan will show whether we used the month to bring about atotal reformation within ourselves or are we going to waste the valuableopportunity?

The National and international position of the Muslim communities leaves muchto be desired. Muslims are lamenting the loss of lives, destruction of property, oppression, tyranny, injustice and a host of other problems all over the world. They are wondering why the promised help of Allah to the believers is nowherein sight. Just one glance into the lifestyles of the overwhelming majority of theMuslims is sufficient to answer the question. Millions of Muslims do not havemuch to their credit besides Muslim names.

Allah's help comes with action and Islamic qualities - not with names or faces -Arabs or non-Arabs, African or European, Chinese or Indians. On the other handevery group, organization, society or individual who talks Islam, seems to havegot its own brand of Islam. The Islamic teachings which were left behind for us,crystal clear and pristine pure, have become so adulterated with foreigncustoms, alien practices and un-Islamic ideologies, that a new Muslim has tomake an effort to search for the Quran and Sunnah brand of Islam or remainconfused and ignorant.

May Allah Ta'ala give us the guidance to resolve that we shall make the Quranand Sunnah our guiding lights and practise Islam as much as possible. If thenon-Muslim inhabitants of our country see Islam in the lives of Muslims, they willnot require much persuasion to accept our beautiful deen.

LAMENT OF THE HOLY QURAN

As an ornament do they adore meYet they keep me and sometimes kiss me

ln their celebration they recite meln dispute they swear by me

On shelves do they securely keep meTill another celebration or dispute

When they need meYes, they read me and memorize me

Yet only an ornament am I

My message lies neglected

My treasure untouchedThe field lies bare

Where blossomed once true gloryWrong is the treatment I receive

So much to give have I

But none is there to receive

He who digs a pit for others must invariably fallinto it.

By being grateful, a man makes himselfdeserving of yet another kindness.

lf one imitates the upright, one becomes upright;if one imitates the crooked, one becomescrooked.

A man who has one finger pointing at anotherhas three more fingers pointing towards himself.

You get the best of others when you give thebest of yourself.

It is nice to be important, but more important tobe nice.

The reason many people fail to recogniseopportunity is because it comes disguised ashard work.

lf your foot slips you may regain your balance. lfyour mouth slips you cannot recall your words.

We are what we pretend to be, so we must becareful of what we pretend to be.

Our examples are like seeds on a windy day, they spread far and wide.

lf you think education is expensive, then whatprice is ignorance?

No one is so powerful that he can harm otherswithout harming himself.

SYNOPSIS OF MADRESSA HIMAYATUL ISLAM

Presented at the BGM of the Alipur Muslim Association - 4th Octob er 2009

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH MOST GRACIOUS MOST MERCIFUL

As S alaamu Alaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu

Madressa Himayatul Islam Q.{ugget Street Masjid) is Alhamdulillah, very much aabaad by the will ofAlmighty Allah. Although the Masjid itself could not be extended to accommodate more Musallees, itwas upgraded, painted and refurbished. The institution employs 2 Imaams, 1 Appa and2Muazzins.

The adjacent Tayob Towers, which we were privileged to use for several years, was sold in January2009. This put us in a state of a predicament, thus forgetting for a moment that Allah SWT is the bestof planners. Subhanallah, the Tayob family came to our rescue and without any hesitation theygenerously granted us the use ofa 3 storey building situated at 176 President Streetjust offEnd Street.

We embarked on renovations at atotal cost of R340000.00

At present, Zuhr, Jummah and Eid Salaahs are performed at the Musallah. It also facilitates Madressaclasses with 65 learners and at the same time the building accommodates and houses I lmaam,2Muazzins and their families.

With Allahs' Barakaah, for Jummah salaah we experience capacity crowds; the Masjid holds + - 400Musallees and the President Street Musallah caters for 1200 Musallees. The approximate monthlyrunning income/expenditure costs tabulated hereunder;
